Influence of Tantra in the Rituals of Shree Jagannath
Odisha Review ISSN 0970-8669 Influence of Tantra in the Rituals of Shree Jagannath Dr. Sarbeswar Sena hree Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe is Sworshipped in the form of Daru Devata (wooden-incarnation) in Shreemandir of Nilachal Dham (Puri). He is world famous as Daru Brahma. In the body of the deity the Brahma (the mystic syllable of Om) is placed; so He is Daru Brahma. But people address Him in thousand names. Similarly followers of different religions have tried their best to establish Jagannath as their tutelary deity but still He is mysterious. No one is able to guess His beginning or end. Development and Validation of a Tantric Sex Scale: Sexual-Mindfulness, Spiritual Purpose, and Genital/Orgasm De-Emphasis
DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A TANTRIC SEX SCALE: SEXUAL- MINDFULNESS, SPIRITUAL PURPOSE, AND GENITAL/ORGASM DE-EMPHASIS Brandon Lee Gordon A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2018 Committee: Joshua Grubbs, Advisor Anne Gordon Kenneth Pargament © 2018 Brandon L. Gordon All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Joshua Grubbs, Advisor Tantra is a religious tradition that holds sex as nourishing to the spiritual life. Within popular culture and scholarly works alike, there are reports claiming that tantric sex results in deepening intimacy, increasing sexual passion, and increasing relational and sexual satisfaction. To date, there is a complete absence of empirical research concerning the purported effects of tantric sex. Given the reported benefits associated with tantric sex, there is a basis for empirical inquiry. This study examined tantra empirically by developing, testing, and validating a brief measure of tantric sexual practice. Additionally, this work demonstrates how this measure of tantric sex might predict relevant outcomes such as relationship and sexual satisfaction. An exploratory factor analysis approach was used with a goal of reducing a large item bank (81 items) to a briefer, 25-item scale. Three subscales emerged: Sexual-mindfulness, Spiritual Purpose, and Genital/orgasm De-emphasis. Further hypothesis testing was conducted using both correlation and regression analyses. Sexual-mindfulness was associated with Relationship and Sexual Satisfaction in correlational and regression analysis. Spiritual Purpose was negatively associated with Relationship Satisfaction in correlational and regression analysis. Genital/orgasm De-emphasis was positively associated with Relationship Satisfaction in correlational and regression analysis. -

In doing so our attention will focus on their varied representations and the contexts in which they have been placed on temple architecture. The aquatic connection emerges as major connecting link between the graceful imageries of celestial womeni often interpreted by scholars as representations of nayikas in stages of love and exhibiting their charms. Often looked at by scholars as apsaras, those infamous alluring 1 snarelike characters of the puranas, who when depicted on the temples^ perform their graceful charms on the spectators. The antithesis between woman and wisdom, sorrow lurking behind the sensual; are observed by some as the reasons why the so called apsaras are carved in profusion on the temple walls. This does not appear convincing. The intention with which I have built up the base, bridging the Salabhanjika, yaksini, nadidevis and apsaras, is to unravel the more chthonfc level of meaning which can be traced back to the Vedic sources. The presence of the woman is ever auspicious and protective, her nourishing aspect and the sensual aspect fuse together or imply fertility, and these concepts have remained in the Indian human psyche 249 perenninally, It is only the contemporary representation which changes the form and hence,? Khajuraho devanganas appear over sensuous than Jaga"t or Matnura yaksis. -

A Sexual Ritual with Māyā in Matsyendrasaṃhitā 40
chapter 18 A Sexual Ritual with Māyā in Matsyendrasaṃhitā 40 Csaba Kiss 1 Introduction In this short article I revisit the Matsyendrasaṃhitā (hereafter MaSaṃ), a Kubjikā-Tripurā oriented tantric yoga text of the Ṣaḍanvayaśāmbhava tradition, probably from thirteenth-century South India, core chapters of which I edited and translated for my PhD studies under the supervision of Professor Alexis Sanderson. My purpose there was to demonstrate that this text provides evi- dence for a transitional phase in the history of Śaiva Tantra, revealing aspects of a transition from Kaula practices to early Haṭhayoga. In the present essay I analyse, and partly edit, MaSaṃ chapter 40, in which a unique and somewhat ambiguous variant of a Śrīvidyā-type sexual ritual is described, and which Pro- fessor Sanderson was kind enough to read with me in Oxford in 2005. I would like to dedicate this paper to him, offering new interpretations of some key ele- ments, and thus updating my previous analysis (Kiss 2009, 66).1 My approach is based on textual criticism: by restoring the text using four available manuscripts, I aim at giving an accurate translation and interpreta- tion, which then enables me to draw some modest conclusions regarding the history of Śaivism around the thirteenth century.2 I would like to contribute to the contemporary research on Śaiva sexual rituals which focuses on their religio-historical importance. For although it is now generally acknowledged that sexual rituals are a distinctive feature of some of the Śaiva tantric tradi- 1 On the Ṣaḍanvayaśāmbhava tradition, see Sanderson 1988, 687; 2002, 2–3; 2014, 72–73, 76–77, 80. -

Abstract Aghoreshwar Mahaprabhu Baba Bhagawan Ram Ji, a well-established saint of the holy city of Varanasi in north India, initiated many changes into the erstwhile Aghor tradition of ascetics in India. This tradition is regarded as an ancient system of spiritual or mystical knowledge by its practitioners and at least some of the practices followed in this tradition can certainly be traced back at least to the time of the Buddha. Over the course of the centuries practitioners of this tradition have interacted with groups of other mystical traditions, exchanging ideas and practices so that both parties in the exchange appear to have been influenced by the other. Naturally, such an interaction between groups can lead to difficulty in determining a clear course of development of the tradition. In this dissertation I bring together micro-history, hagiography, folklore, religious and comparative studies together in an attempt to understand how this modern day religious-spiritual tradition has been shaped by the past and the role religion has to play in modern life, if only with reference to a single case study. -

The Subtle Body: Religious, Spiritual, Health-Related, or All Three? A Look Into the Subtle Physiology of Traditional and Modern Forms of Yoga Kathryn E. Heislup RELG 401: Senior Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Major in Religion University of Mary Washington April 20, 2020 2 Notions of subtle body systems have migrated and changed throughout India and Tibet over many years with much controversy; the movement of these ideas to the West follows a similar controversial path, and these developments in both Asia and the West exemplify how one cannot identify a singular, legitimate, “subtle body”. Asserting that there is only one legitimate teaching, practice, and system of the subtle body is problematic and inappropriate. The subtle body refers to assumed energy points within the human body that cannot be viewed by the naked eye, but is believed by several traditions to be part of our physical existence. Indo-Tibetan notions of a subtle body do include many references to similar ideas when it comes to this type of physiology, but there has never been one sole agreement on a legitimate identification or intended use. -
