  • Neville Brothers -- the first Family of New Orleans Music -- Has Vowed Not to Return to New Orleans
    Dec. 15, 2005-- Cyril Neville boarded Amtrak's City of New Orleans train with a full head of steam. He joined singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie earlier this month for the first leg of a 12-day journey from Chicago to New Orleans, playing concerts along the way to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Neville, however, won't be on the train when it rolls into his old hometown. He won't be going home at all. Neville, 56, percussionist-vocalist and youngest member of the Neville Brothers -- the first family of New Orleans music -- has vowed not to return to New Orleans. During a heartfelt conversation before embarking on the train journey, Neville explained he and his wife, Gaynielle, have bought a home in Austin, Texas. Cyril Neville joins his nephew Ivan Neville, as well as the Radiators and the Iguanas as popular New Orleans acts who have settled in Austin. Some even perform in an ad hoc band known as the Texiles. They sing a different song about the promised recovery of New Orleans. "Would I go back to live?" Neville asked. "There's nothing there. And the situation for musicians was a joke. People thought there was a New Orleans music scene -- there wasn't. You worked two times a year: Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest. The only musicians I knew who made a living playing music in New Orleans were Kermit Ruffins and Pete Fountain. Everyone else had to have a day job or go on tour. I have worked more in two months in Austin than I worked in two years in New Orleans.

The 18 selections span 37 years, from the Top 40 R&B hit “Over You” (1960) to the biographical “To Make Me Who I Am” from his 1997 A&M album of the same title. Also spotlighted are his #2 pop/#1 R&B classic “Tell It Like It Is” (1966), #2 pop smash duet with Linda Ronstadt “Don’t Know Much” (1989) and his Top 10 solo masterpiece “Everybody Plays The Fool” (1991). Loss Leaders releases dating back to 1969 (and even a little earlier). For those who lived through the era, Warner Bros. Records was winning the sales of an entire generation by signing and supporting some of music’s most uniquely groundbreaking recording artists… during music’s most uniquely groundbreak- ing time. With an appealingly irreverent style (“targeted youth marketing,” it would be called today), WB was making lifelong fans of the kids who entered into the label’s vast catalog of art- ists via the Loss Leaders series—advertised on inner sleeves & brochures, and offering generous selections priced at $1 per LP, $2 for doubles and $3 for their sole 3-LP release, Looney Tunes And Merrie Melodies. And that was including postage. Yes… those were the days, but back then there were very few ways, outside of cut-out bins or a five-finger discount, to score bulk music as cheaply. Warners unashamedly admitted that their inten- tions were to sell more records, by introducing listeners to music they weren’t hearing on their radios, or finding in many of their (still weakly distributed) record stores. And it seemed to work… because the series continued until 1980, and the program issued approximately 34 titles, by our questionable count (detailed in later posts). But, the oldsters among us all fondly remember the multi-paged, gatefold sleeves and inviting artwork/packaging that beckoned from the inner sleeves of our favorite albums, not to mention the assorted rarities, b-sides and oddities that dotted many of the releases.

Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli analysoida Zigaboon soittotyyliä seuraavista näkökulmista: fraseeraus, synkopointi, claven vaikutus Zigaboon kompeissa ja virvelirummun käyttö. Olen kirjoittanut 8 kpl transkriptioita sellaisista Zigaboon soittamista kompeista, joista tulee selvästi esille New Orleans funkin tyylillisiä piirteitä ja jotka tukevat tutkimukseni tavoitteita. Kappaleiden valintaperusteena oli myös se, että kyseisiä kappaleita ja komppeja on mielestäni erityisen mukavaa soittaa. Ääninäytteet analysoitavista kompeista ovat työn mukana olevalla liiteäänitteellä (salainen). Kerron tutkimuksessani lyhyesti New Orleans funkin historiasta ja siitä, miten eri kulttuurien ja sitä kautta eri musiikkikulttuurien yhteensulautuminen on vaikuttanut New Orleansin rikkaan musiikkikulttuurin muodostumiseen.
