Friends of WWOZ Board of Directors/NOJHFF WWOZ General Manager’S Report September 13, 2017 Friends of WWOZ Board of Directors/NOJHFF WWOZ General Manager’s Report September 13, 2017 Highlights: It’s my pleasure to introduce our new Director of Development, Marcel McGee. Marcel has over 19 years of successful experience in donor relations and fundraising, working in settings as varied as Loyola University New Orleans, Dillard University, the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations, American Red Cross-Southeast Louisiana Chapter, The Audubon Nature Institute and CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation in Maryland. Marcel is a native New Orleanian who grew up in the Ninth Ward. He served in the United States Navy and is a graduate of Southern University at New Orleans. He is a member of both the Association of Fundraising Professionals and The Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Research and planning for our Tricentennial Music Moments project is underway. There is a lot of excitement around this effort and more notable New Orleanians and ‘OZ supporters are signing on every day to voice the spots. We continue to seek funding for the project. Thanks to the Ruth U. Fertel Foundation for a generous grant in the amount of $15,000. This grant will allow us to bring A CLOSER WALK into the schools of the Greater New Orleans area and refine and expand the project. We also received notice from Lt. Governor Nungesser’s office that we will be receiving a $12,000 grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council and the Louisiana Division of the Arts. Additionally, we learned that we have been recommended to receive $14,000 from the Arts Council of New Orleans. Several excellent external meetings Quint Davis and the Festival Productions group, Tod Smith, General Manager of WWL-TV, Greg Lucas, Executive Director of the Preservation Hall Foundation. Excellent articles about WWOZ in BreakThru Magazine and Louisiana Kitchen & Culture Magazine. http://www.magazinevolume.com/20540BM WWOZ was named Best Local Radio Station in Gambit’s 2017 Reader’s Poll. We have a very busy Fall planned between our live broadcasts, pledge drive, NOJHFF Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, Jazz and Heritage Concert Series, Ponderosa Stomp, Tricentennial Moments production and more. OZ GM Report September Page 1 of 6 Content & Programming: The most recent Nielsen audience data (Spring 2017) showed a record on-air audience of 87,300 weekly listeners for WWOZ-FM. This continues a recent growth pattern and represents a full 25% increase year-to-year! Below is the 10 year trend for total on-air audience: Over the summer, our music staff initiated and completed an initial review of the pre-Katrina LP’s that have been in storage since the storm. Of approximately 7,000 LPs, we have identified about 300 that are worth considering digitizing and a small number that may be of high value. The remainder will be disposed of – perhaps in a surplus record/CD sale later this year. In the meantime, this freed up one full monthly rental space. At the same time, we’ve cleared out a second rental storage space, discarding some items and moving others to our Kenner engineering facility. Savings from releasing these storage spaces will be over $9,000 annually. With the fall performance season ramping up, we are currently working on plans to cover the biennial Ponderosa Stomp Festival, with live coverage from the Ace Hotel (in cooperation with WFMU, New York) and a video live stream of their music conference. The events run October 5-7. The following weekend we will live broadcast performances from main stage of the NOJHFF Crescent City Blues and Barbeque Fest and will be supporting the festival with video for the Jumbotron at the park. In September, we have a performance by the Edna Karr High School Brass Band on Monday September 25 at Noon. We are also working on plans for the new Second Line Season for Takin’ It To The Streets. Volunteers During the month of August WWOZ off-air Volunteers contributed 404.75 hours in Administrative/Clerical support; production; music digitization; general operations and membership/development. Based on a new Independent Sector report Setting the value of one volunteer hour in the state of Louisiana at $22-24 hours WWOZ’s off-air volunteer contribution was $8,904.50. On-air hours for the month of August totaled 672 - a value of $14,784.00. OZ GM Report September Page 2 of 6 WWOZ will have a general orientation for new volunteers on Friday, September 15, and on Saturday, September 16 from 2-4 p.m. at 1008 North Peters Street. • Neville Brothers -- the first Family of New Orleans Music -- Has Vowed Not to Return to New Orleans
Dec. 15, 2005-- Cyril Neville boarded Amtrak's City of New Orleans train with a full head of steam. He joined singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie earlier this month for the first leg of a 12-day journey from Chicago to New Orleans, playing concerts along the way to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Neville, however, won't be on the train when it rolls into his old hometown. He won't be going home at all. Neville, 56, percussionist-vocalist and youngest member of the Neville Brothers -- the first family of New Orleans music -- has vowed not to return to New Orleans. During a heartfelt conversation before embarking on the train journey, Neville explained he and his wife, Gaynielle, have bought a home in Austin, Texas. Cyril Neville joins his nephew Ivan Neville, as well as the Radiators and the Iguanas as popular New Orleans acts who have settled in Austin. Some even perform in an ad hoc band known as the Texiles. They sing a different song about the promised recovery of New Orleans. "Would I go back to live?" Neville asked. "There's nothing there. And the situation for musicians was a joke. People thought there was a New Orleans music scene -- there wasn't. You worked two times a year: Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest. The only musicians I knew who made a living playing music in New Orleans were Kermit Ruffins and Pete Fountain. Everyone else had to have a day job or go on tour. I have worked more in two months in Austin than I worked in two years in New Orleans.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

  • PRESS RELEASE Can Ya' Dig It
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 25, 2015 CONTACT: Heather West, 773/301-5767, [email protected] New Orleans, LA – Since bursting onto the scene in 1998, John Lisi has been hailed as one of the best guitar slingers in Louisiana – a major rave for the most musical place in all the world. Indeed, Lisi is a master of the Dobro, mandolin, resonator and Stratocaster, and turns offbeat portrayals of everyday life into funky-bluesy- body-shakin’ music that just makes a person feel better. Call it what you will, John Lisi calls it the same thing he calls his band—Delta Funk! The band’s infectious sound and energetic stage presence combined with Lisi’s brilliant guitar work have made them natural favorites in their hometown of New Orleans. Shut the Front Door is Lisi’s latest and most fully realized rendering of his signature sound, complete with all the essential ingredients—sassy female background vocals, kickin’ horns, and an in-the-pocket rhythm section topped with stunning guitar riffs. His 2002 Louisiana Red Hot Records debut Blues for Chloe saw Lisi backed by blues giants Big Jay McNeely, Henry Gray and Larry Garner. Though Lisi has two prior releases with his mainstay ensemble, Preachin’ to the Choir (2000) and Can Ya’ Dig It (2004), Shut the Front Door is Lisi’s first time teaming up with Louisiana Red Hot to bring Delta Funk! to the national arena. Notable among a number of industry nods, Lisi was honored alongside Dr. John and Alvin Batiste with the Slim Harpo Award for Blues Pioneer in 2009.
