"Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

Circuit Rift Sends Sound Waves AN INTERPRETATION OF THE COPYRIGHT ACT’S SCOPE OF PROTECTION FOR DIGITAL SAMPLING OF SOUND RECORDINGS INTRODUCTION As the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit aptly pointed out in Bridgeport Music, Inc. v. Dimension Films,1 “there is no Rosetta stone for the interpretation of the copyright2 statute.”3 A lawyer may need a Rosetta stone to interpret a musical arrangement, however, one needs no such key to decrypt the Copyright Act of 1976.4 Despite the ongoing debate over whether the Copyright Act allows a de minimis5 exception to apply to the unauthorized use of copyrighted sound recordings, interpreting the Act may be simpler

  • History of the Violin
History of the Violin Batchelder violin (USA) The earliest stringed instruments were mostly plucked (the Greek lyre). Bowed instruments may have originated in the equestrian cultures of Central Asia, an example being the Kobyz (Kazakh: қобыз) or kyl-kobyz is an ancient Turkic, Kazakh string instrument or Mongolian instrument Morin huur: Turkic and Mongolian horsemen from Inner Asia were probably the world’s earliest fiddlers. Their two-stringed upright fiddles were strung with horsehair strings, played with horsehair bows, and often feature a carved horse’s head at the end of the neck. The violins, violas, and cellos we play today, and whose bows are still strung with horsehair, are a legacy of the nomads. It is believed that these instruments eventually spread to China, India, the Byzantine Empire and the Middle East, where they developed into instruments such as the erhu in China, the rebab in the Middle East, the lyra in the Byzantine Empire and the esraj in India. The violin in its present form emerged in early 16th-Century Northern Italy, where the port towns of Venice and Genoa maintained extensive ties to central Asia through the trade routes of the silk road. The modern European violin evolved from various bowed stringed instruments from the Middle East and the Byzantine Empire. It is most likely that the first makers of violins borrowed from three types of current instruments: the rebec, in use since the 10th century (itself derived from the Byzantine lyra and the Arabic rebab), the Renaissance fiddle, and the lira da braccio (derived from the Byzantine lira).

  • EVALUATING the DE Minimis EXCEPTION in DIGITAL SAMPLING THROUGH VMG SALSOUL, LLC and BRIDGEPORT MUSIC, INC
CREATIVITY OR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT?: EVALUATING THE DE MINIMIs EXCEPTION IN DIGITAL SAMPLING THROUGH VMG SALSOUL, LLC AND BRIDGEPORT MUSIC, INC. Ryan Beeck* ABSTRACT In 2005, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit controversially held in Bridgeport Music, Inc. v. Dimension Films that the de minimis exception-the doctrine that a small use of a copyrighted work does not constitute copyright infringement-did not apply to copyrighted sound recordings. The decision was the only federal court of appeals decision to rule directly on this discrete issue until the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decided VMG Salsoul, LLC v. Ciccone in 2016. The Ninth Circuit held, in direct contravention to the Sixth Circuit, that the de minimis exception did apply to copyrighted sound recordings. This Note will analyze the Bridgeport and VMG Salsoul decisions, conclude that the VMG Salsoul decision is correct, and offer some potential solutions to the issue of digital sampling in today's music industry. Introduction There are many beginnings to the history of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). It would be a mistake to exclude the impact that disco had upon house, techno, acid house, and dance music in general. While disco evolved mostly in the dance capital of America (New York), it proposed the idea that danceable songs could be mixed smoothly together, allowing for long term dancing to previously recorded music. Prior to the disco era, nightlife dancing was restricted to bands or jukeboxes, which limited variety and options of songs and genres. The selections of the DJs mattered more than their technical excellence at mixing.
