Oliver-Programme.Pdf Taylorian Productions proudly presents Based upon the Charles Dickens story, with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart Directed and Choreographed by John Cumberlidge Assistant Director - Matthew James Musical Director - Julian Power Production Styled by John Cumberlidge Lighting design by Paul Seed for PSC Productions Sound Design by Alex Linney Wig & Make-Up Design by John Cumberlidge By arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York 3 producer and assistant director MatthewAs co-founder of James Taylorian Productions, I am honoured to welcome you to the Gaiety Theatre for a true classic – Lionel Bart's musical masterpiece, Oliver! In this, its 50th anniversary on the London stage, the story needs no introduction. It has thrilled audiences for half a century and I’ve no doubt this production will do the same! Following our highly acclaimed success of 'The King & I' 12 months ago, we are delighted to once again welcome back our resident director Mr. John Cumberlidge, his patience, enthusiasm and flair for the project is obvious throughout the whole of this wonderful show. This year’s exception has been working with 38 talented local children and from the outset they have been treated as 'young professionals' and have responded accordingly. That the company is able to present its fourth summer show and continues to bring much remembered theatrical entertainment to the Manx public – the wish of the much-missed Patrick Taylor – is something which everyone associated with Taylorian is extremely proud of. I would like to personally thank the director, cast, crew and members of the production company for their constant support all their hard work and commitment. Finally, on behalf of Taylorian Productions, I thank YOU, the audience, for your continued support for what promises to be an uplifting theatrical experience. Matthew James – our founder Mr'If only PatrickMr T had seen Taylor that'. 'Wouldn't Patrick have loved it.' Just two of the comments heard during rehearsals over the past few months. More than two years after the passing of our co-founder, the respect and regard in which Patrick Taylor is held remains unwavering. ‘Mr T’, as he was affectionately known, derived so much pleasure from his involvement in theatre, that it was infectious. And that is certainly noticeable for many on and off-stage in this production who were touched by his support and loyal friendship. No doubt during this run, 'Mr T’ will be looking down with an encouraging word, particularly for younger members of the cast who he loved to see thrive and progress. Oliver! puts the sense of occasion back into going to the theatre something Patrick Denton Taylor would fully endorse along with the company which bears his name. 5 THEGALE FoundedFounded 19891989 ORCE Theatre School President: Lady Anna New, CST.J, MISTD Director: Mrs Barbara Gale A.D.B. • Shakespeare on Audio (CD, Vinyl & Cassette)
Shakespeare on Audio (CD, Vinyl & Cassette) Historical Recordings & Anthologies Shakespeare recordings have been in evidence from the earliest days of the wax cylinder, through the short-playing 78 rpm shellac discs of the 1930s and the long-playing 33 1/3 rpm vinyl discs (LPs) and reel-to-reel tapes of the 1950s, to the widely available audio cassettes, compact discs (CDs), videotapes, and digital recordings of the present. Before Orson Welles’s innovative Mercury Text Records series issued by Columbia Records in 1938, no one had attempted to record full-length audio versions of Shakespeare. Previously only isolated passages from the plays had been available, performed by fabled stage actors such as E.H. Sothern and Julia Marlowe, Herbert Beerbohm-Tree, Ellen Terry and a few others and recorded between 1890 and the First World War. Between the wars, Hamlet’s “O what a rogue and peasant slave…” and “How all occasions do inform…” and Macbeth’s “Is this a dagger…?” were recorded on 78s by such stars as Henry Ainley and John Barrymore, and included with other famous soliloquies and educational intent on Johnston Forbes-Robertson’s two-disc How to Speak Shakespeare (Columbia, 1928). These recordings existed almost entirely for the purpose of preserving a famous actor’s reading of a set speech. The custom of recording speeches and brief duologues by great actors, although partly a matter of technology and packaging (a speech can fill one side of a 78 rpm disk), reflects a cultural reality as well, an attitude toward Shakespeare that sees his plays as predominantly a collection of purple passages and wise saws.
