It’s been fascinating reading your snippets of what ‘Saturday Morning Pictures’ has meant to you. We are working hard behind the scenes as always and I am pleased to say that Champion The Wonder Horse is on its way, plus more Children’s Film Foundation films, with a very young Melvyn Hayes and an even younger Frazer Hines. Who spotted a young Michael Crawford in shorts? This month we bring you a brilliant new box set – following on from the success of Music Hall & Variety Act Memories Volume One, here’s Volume Two, which includes my fascinating insight into life behind the doors of The Windmill Theatre, along with Top of the Bill with Davy Kaye and Sally Barnes – a real treat for Music Hall fans. Also included is the long-awaited release of the rare filmMurder at the Windmill, once thought lost, which features Garry Marsh, Jon Pertwee, Jack Livesey and Jimmy Edwards. Other performers featured in the collection include Max Bygraves, The Beverley Sisters, Dora Bryan, Frank Randle, Robert Morley, Roy Hudd, Roy Castle, Norman Wisdom and Max Wall, plus much more, all with optional subtitles, see pages 2-3.     The Nation's Matron: Hattie Jacques and British Post-War Popular Culture

    The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron. Without these documents, the best investigative reporting in the world could not have produced a book, and the secrets of CIA mind-control work would have remained buried forever, as the men who knew them had always intended. From the documentary base, I was able to expand my knowledge through interviews and readings in the behavioral sciences. Neverthe- less, the final result is not the whole story of the CIA's attack on the mind. Only a few insiders could have written that, and they choose to remain silent. I have done the best I can to make the book as accurate as possible, but I have been hampered by the refusal of most of the principal characters to be interviewed and by the CIA's destruction in 1973 of many of the key docu- ments.
