MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art Edvard Munch the modern life of the soul The Museum of Modern Art February 19-May 8, 2006 EDVARD MUNCH, the internationally renowned Norwegian painter, printmaker, and draftsman, sought to translate personal trauma into universal terms and, in the process, to comprehend the fundamental components of human existence: birth, love, and death. Munch's pri mary source of inspiration was his own life history, which was marked by romantic suffering, illness, and the death of some of his closest family members. But Munch was also a product of his time, inspired first by the bohemian community of his native Kristiania (now Oslo) and later by his association with the Parisian and Berlin avant-gardes. In the end, painting became a kind of religious endeavor for Munch, a means through which he hoped to "understand the meaning of life [and] help others gain an understanding of their lives." Munch was born in 1863, on a farm outside of Kristiania. His early work, consisting primarily of family portraits, was inspired by the art of the Norwegian naturalist painters, among them his mentor Christian Krohg. -
The History and Revival of the Meråker Clarinet
MOT 2016 ombrukket 4.qxp_Layout 1 03.02.2017 15.49 Side 81 “I saw it on the telly” – The history and revival of the Meråker clarinet Bjørn Aksdal Introduction One of the most popular TV-programmes in Norway over the last 40 years has been the weekly magazine “Norge Rundt” (Around Norway).1 Each half-hour programme contains reports from different parts of Norway, made locally by the regional offices of NRK, the Norwegian state broad- casting company. In 1981, a report was presented from the parish of Meråker in the county of Nord-Trøndelag, where a 69-year old local fiddler by the name of Harald Gilland (1912–1992), played a whistle or flute-like instrument, which he had made himself. He called the instrument a “fløit” (flute, whistle), but it sounded more like a kind of home-made clarinet. When the instrument was pictured in close-up, it was possible to see that a single reed was fastened to the blown end (mouth-piece). This made me curious, because there was no information about any other corresponding instrument in living tradition in Norway. Shortly afterwards, I contacted Harald Gilland, and we arranged that I should come to Meråker a few days later and pay him a visit. The parish of Meråker has around 2900 inhabitants and is situated ca. 80 km northeast of Trondheim, close to the Swedish border and the county of Jamtlandia. Harald Gilland was born in a place called Stordalen in the 1. The first programme in this series was sent on October 2nd 1976. -

6. KUNDENE OG KONTAKTENE Kundekatalogen – Sosiale Grupper, Kjønn, Alder, Geografi
Kari Michelsen: HUSET WARMUTH Kapittel 6: Kunder og kontakter 6. KUNDENE OG KONTAKTENE Kundekatalogen – sosiale grupper, kjønn, alder, geografi Firma Warmuth førte protokoll over forsendelsene til sine kunder. -
Gustav Vigeland. the Power and Feeling of Sculpture Thiel Gallery 15 June – 29 September, 2019
Gustav Vigeland. The power and feeling of sculpture Thiel Gallery 15 June – 29 September, 2019 The human condition and the power of eroticism and melancholy were the underpinning themes for the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869–1943). He devoted his entire life to art and worked intently on completing his monumental sculptural projects. After a bohemian existence in 1890s Europe, he returned to Norway, to make portraits and innovative monuments. The final decades of his life were spent mainly on creating Vigelandsparken in Christiania (now Oslo). This exhibition seeks to give a fuller picture of the artist behind Vigelandsparken, Vigeland’s efforts to promote his artistic endeavours, and the importance of social networks. Vigeland was driven by his artistic visions, not least when it came to shape a public space for the existential quest of modern man. With its eight bronze sculptures, the Thiel Gallery has the largest collection of Vigeland’s art outside Norway. Four of these can be seen in the Gallery’s park: Man Embracing a Woman (1905), Man and Woman (1906), Old Man and Young Girl (1906), and Mother and Child (1907). Ernest Thiel supported Vigeland at a pivotal point in his artistic career. Their relationship is a fascinating aspect of the common Swedish-Norwegian cultural heritage. This exhibition is a tribute to the 150th anniversary of Gustav Vigeland, which is celebrated in 2019. Spiritual portrayal of bohemian and modern life Gustav Vigeland has a unique position among Norwegian sculptors, with a vast body of work and singular imagery focusing on mankind. He grew up in Mandal in southern Norway, but moved to Christiania when he was only 15, where he was apprenticed to a wood carver. -

Tina Horrisland Engedal 2 Abstract In this master thesis I will examine the development in the art of acting at Den Nationale Scene in Bergen during the years 1876 to 1918. Actress Octavia Sperati and her work at the theatre will be the orientation point for analyses, based on her two books Theatererindringer and Fra det gamle Komediehus. The initial part of this dissertation begins with a historical view on the development of “natural acting” from the bourgeois tradition, starting in the 1750s, and up to 1876-1918. Further I will look at the conditions for a development in the art of acting at Den Nationale Scene during this period. These external conditions are the theatre building, the repertoire, the theatre managers and directors, the actors conditions for work and rehearsals and the audience and theatre critics. I will go through the years 1876 to 1918 chronologically and analyse specific performances that is relevant for a change in the art of acting. Mainly the change is towards a more natural form of acting, where the everyday life is portrayed on stage. My analysis shows that the contemporary dramatic poetry of mainly Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson sets the condition of how to act. The art of acting is in a practical tradition, that means that the actors does not get their education from theoretical acting schools and that there is no fundamental theories on how to act. -
Masteroppgave i litteraturformidling, Universitetet i Oslo, høst 2008. -
Moma EXHIBITION EXPLORES EDVARD MUNCH's COMPELLING
MoMA EXHIBITION EXPLORES EDVARD MUNCH’S COMPELLING ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT, SURVEYING HIS CAREER IN ITS ENTIRETY Major Retrospective Is the First to Be Held in An American Museum in Three Decades Edvard Munch: The Modern Life of the Soul February 19—May 8, 2006 The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Gallery, sixth floor New York, February 14, 2006—Edvard Munch: The Modern Life of the Soul is the first retrospective devoted to the work of Edvard Munch (1863–1944)—the internationally renowned Norwegian painter, printmaker, and draftsman—to be held in an American museum in almost three decades. Featuring 87 paintings and 50 works on paper, it showcases Munch’s artistic achievement in its true richness and diversity, surveying his career in its entirety, from 1880 to 1944. Beginning with the artist’s early portraits and genre scenes, the exhibition charts Munch’s move away from Norwegian naturalism and towards an exploration of modern existential experience. Following each phase of his career, the exhibition shows Munch’s struggle to translate personal trauma into universal terms and, in the process, to comprehend the fundamental components of human existence: birth, love, and death. The exhibition is organized by Kynaston McShine, Chief Curator at Large, The Museum of Modern Art. MoMA is the only venue for the exhibition, which will be on view in The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Gallery on the sixth floor from February 19 to May 8, 2006. Munch’s primary source of inspiration was his own life, which was marked by heartbreak, physical illness, emotional instability, and the deaths of some of his closest family members. -
