Hans Christian Andersen Between a Culture of Meaning and a Culture of Presence
Hans Christian Andersen between a culture of meaning and a culture of presence Mogens Davidsen, Associate Professor, University of Southern Denmark Abstract The article opens with questioning what kind of “community” Hans Christian Andersen as an artist can be said to have been a part of, considering that the community of Andersen’s upbringing was radically different from the one he was socialized into through his literary career. With the point of departure in Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s distinction between literature displaying “presence in language” and “presence achieved against language”, the article suggests that part of Andersen’s work (with Søren Kierkegaard’s critique of the novel Only a Fiddler in focus) can be seen as examples of presence achieved against language. With the two presence categories which Gumbrecht typologically distinguishes as a “presence culture” and a “meaning culture” in mind, the presence categories are ascribed to an oral culture of Andersen’s social background, and the elitist intellectual culture of the Danish Golden Age. Inspired by Kierkegaard’s characterization of Andersen’s novel in musical terms, the article further presents a possible understanding of presence, the implications of which reaches far beyond the harmonic paradigm of the Golden Age and into the musical modernism of Arnold Schönberg in the twentieth century. Introduction What kind of community can Hans Christian Andersen rightly be said to have been a part of, if such a community also has to be detectible in his work as formal or thematic aspects of his literature? This is not an altogether easy question to answer, taken into consideration that Andersen came from the very poorest part of society and was socialized into the cultural and artistic norms of the elitist circles of the Danish Golden Age of the late absolute monarchy. -
The Tension Between Illusion and Reality in H. Ibsen's the Wild Duck
Global Journal of HUMAN-SOCIAL SCIENCE: A Arts & Humanities - Psychology Volume 19 Issue 8 Version 1.0 Year 2019 Type: Double Blind Peer Reviewed International Research Journal Publisher: Global Journals Online ISSN: 2249-460x & Print ISSN: 0975-587X The Tension between Illusion and Reality in H. Ibsen’s The Wild Duck By Dr. Mahmoud Nayef Baroud Islamic University of Gaza Abstract- Much of contemporary criticism of Ibsen plays has examined one of two concerns: Ibsen and Feminism, or Ibsen as a realist and a pioneer of modern theatre and drama. Articles on the first matter are often critical of universalizing readings of Ibsen that would have the dramatist concerned with the ills of humanity; articles on the latter theme tend to rejoice Ibsen’s assumed anti-theatrical overcoming of melodrama. Both topics can be found in his masterpiece The Wild Duck which is more honoured and received well in the study more than the other plays. Like Hamlet, The Wild Duck can be interpreted by each one in his own image; one day it will be read as a tragedy or tragicomedy, the next as the harshest irony; parts of it are clumsy, in other parts are embedded old controversies of that time. So searching yet so delicate is the touch, that these flaws and notions seem in themselves to strengthen the play. In this work, Ibsen perfected his own special power to infuse the particular, dull, limited fact with a halo and a glory. This paper is an attempt to examine the tension between illusion and reality in the play. -
Anette Storli Andersen
THE YOUNG IBSEN’S THEATRE AESTHETICS – A THEATRE OF THE OLD, FREE AND MOUNTAINOUS NORTH Anette Storli Andersen Ibsen’s dramas are today world dramas – not primarily as literature or printed books, but as theatre – on stage. The main point of this article is to show two historical examples for how theatre has functioned as a community building institution and to underline the fact that before Ibsen, drama as theatre had played an important part in the making of a common world among Norwegian citizens. I will also suggest how the young Ibsen profited from these established theatre traditions during his practical theatre career – before he dissociated himself from Norwegian theatre and the Norwegian national character in 1864. This means that I disagree with Benedict Anderson (1991, 44) when he argues that the development of printed national languages laid the basis for national consciousness and accordingly also for the modern nation state. When Ibsen and his contemporaries were fighting for a Norwegian theatre and theatre aesthetics in the 1850s and early 1860s, a written Norwegian language, which was distinctly different from written Danish, did not exist. The literary market was marginal compared to the market for theatre performances. Thus, theatre was the most important institution for strengthening the national consciousness. This position is underlined by Ibsen’s artistic career: Until the early 1860s, Ibsen got most of his income from the theatre and his dramas were first performed on stage and then printed later on – if printed at all. When the Norwegian constitution was made in 1814, the written language was Danish. -
Henrik Ibsen 1828-1906

MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art Edvard Munch the modern life of the soul The Museum of Modern Art February 19-May 8, 2006 EDVARD MUNCH, the internationally renowned Norwegian painter, printmaker, and draftsman, sought to translate personal trauma into universal terms and, in the process, to comprehend the fundamental components of human existence: birth, love, and death. Munch's pri mary source of inspiration was his own life history, which was marked by romantic suffering, illness, and the death of some of his closest family members. But Munch was also a product of his time, inspired first by the bohemian community of his native Kristiania (now Oslo) and later by his association with the Parisian and Berlin avant-gardes. In the end, painting became a kind of religious endeavor for Munch, a means through which he hoped to "understand the meaning of life [and] help others gain an understanding of their lives." Munch was born in 1863, on a farm outside of Kristiania. His early work, consisting primarily of family portraits, was inspired by the art of the Norwegian naturalist painters, among them his mentor Christian Krohg. -

Andersen and the Heibergs1 by Colin Roth t must have been exciting for the ballet historian, Knud Arne Jür Igensen, to discover a Bournonville manuscript in the Royal Library’s collection which opens with what is clearly a reference to Søren Kier ke gaard.2 Though not mentioned by name, Kierkegaard is readily identifiable because his Master’s degree dissertation on ‘The Concept of Irony’ is explicitly referred to in the first sentence. It was right that the discovery was quickly shared with researchers at the Søren Kierke gaard Research Centre at Copenhagen’s University. This article is a study of the document, its context and especially of the references con cealed within it. A complete transcription of the Danish original and a new English translation appear as appendices, one of which should, ideally, be read first. -
Kvalitetsforhandlinger»
