7 Hello, everybody. Our special topic is American tea culture. It’s an interesting topic. We hope that you find it informa- tive.

8 Background

We choose this topic because tea is our favorite drink. So, we decided to combine it with American culture for our project.

9 First, we will begin with a tad bit of history. From our research, we learned that Americans have been drinking tea ever since their country started.

10 The History

Tea plays an important role in a famous event in their early history. It was called the . However, it wasn't a party. It was much more serious than that.

11 It happened because Americans drank lots of tea. But, they had to pay high taxes on this tea to their King back in England. They were very angry about these taxes.

12 So, when a ship full of tea leaves arrived in Boston harbor, they threw all of the tea into the water. They didn't pay for the tea, and this because a famous protest.

13 This protest helped to start the revolution- ary war with Britain. So, many Americans associate a tea party with protesting against the government.

14 Trend

Although tea is the most popular beverage in England, Americans prefer as a way to get their , especially with breakfast.

15 However, this doesn't mean that tea isn't popular in America. Americans drink lots of tea. Now, we will discuss the ways that Americans prefer to drink their tea.

16 In terms of temperature, eighty five percent of tea in America is served cold. This is called iced tea.

17 Iced Tea

Next, let's talk about fruit. Americans love to drink their tea with . At a restaurant, tea is always served with a lemon wedge. If it doesn't have lemon, the drink is not complete.

18 Of course, . Americans love sugar, you might say that they are sugar addicts. So, most Americans put lots of sugar in their tea.

19 Finally, color. Americans tend to prefer light color tea that is clear. Most Americans don't want dark, cloudy tea.

20 Although tea culture did not start in America, Americans have made two im- portant innovations in tea technology. Let's talk about them now.

The first innovation is tea bags. They were invented by tea seller Thomas Sullivan in nineteen o three, and made from silk.

21 The Technology

The second innovation is instant tea. This is a dried and granulated from of tea that only requires water to be ready. So, it is very convenient to maker.

It was introduced by the Nestle company in nineteen forty six.

22 Sweet Tea

Okay, now let's discuss some popular American tea . The first is called sweet tea. It is the classic southern drink. It is double strength tea with lots of sugar.

23 Arnold Palmer

The next is the Arnold Palmer. He was a famous golfer who invented a famous drink in the nineteen sixties.

This drink consists of half iced tea, and half . It's great in the summer.

24 Long Island Iced Tea

Next is the long island iced tea. It is a popular alcoholic cocktail that can be found on most American drink menus.

25 But it has no tea, so the name is very confusing. It only looks like iced tea. So be careful or you could get very drunk!

So, we have made Long Island Iced tea for all of the teachers.

26 Just kidding!

It is Arnold Palmer.

27 Conclusion

In order to share this information with beginning ELF learners who might take a trip to the US, we have put this information in a handy illustrated booklet.
