We wanted to combine it with American culture for our project. First, we will begin with a tad bit of history. Ameri- cans drank lots of tea, but they had to pay high taxes on this tea to their King back in England. So, they threw a lot of Tea into Boston harbor, without paying for it. This protest helped to start the revolutionary war with Britain. Next, we will discuss the ways that Americans pre- fer to drink their tea. They have made two major tea innovations. First is tea bags, and second is instant tea. Then we also introduced the sweet tea, Arnold Palmer and long island iced tea. They are very popular American tea. 5 Acknowledgements After such a long time, our special topic finally suc- cessful completion. Our special topic is American tea culture. It’s an interesting topic. We hope that you find it informa- tive. 8 Background We choose this topic because tea is our favorite drink. So, we decided to combine it with American culture for our project. 9 First, we will begin with a tad bit of history. From our research, we learned that Americans have been drinking tea ever since their country started. 10 The History Tea plays an important role in a famous event in their early history. It was called the tea party. However, it wasn't a party. It was much more serious than that. 11 It happened because Americans drank lots of tea. But, they had to pay high taxes on this tea to their King back in England. They were very angry about these taxes. 12 So, when a ship full of tea leaves arrived in Boston harbor, they threw all of the tea into the water. They didn't pay for the tea, and this because a famous protest. 13 This protest helped to start the revolution- ary war with Britain. So, many Americans associate a tea party with protesting against the government. 14 Trend Although tea is the most popular beverage in England, Americans prefer coffee as a way to get their caffeine, especially with breakfast. 15 However, this doesn't mean that tea isn't popular in America. Americans drink lots of tea. Now, we will discuss the ways that Americans prefer to drink their tea. 16 In terms of temperature, eighty five percent of tea in America is served cold. This is called iced tea. 17 Iced Tea Next, let's talk about fruit. Americans love to drink their tea with lemon. At a restaurant, tea is always served with a lemon wedge. If it doesn't have lemon, the drink is not complete. 18 Of course, sugar. Americans love sugar, you might say that they are sugar addicts. So, most Americans put lots of sugar in their tea. 19 Finally, color. Americans tend to prefer light color tea that is clear. Most Americans don't want dark, cloudy tea. 20 Although tea culture did not start in America, Americans have made two im- portant innovations in tea technology. Let's talk about them now. The first innovation is tea bags. They were invented by tea seller Thomas Sullivan in nineteen o three, and made from silk. 21 The Technology The second innovation is instant tea. This is a dried and granulated from of tea that only requires water to be ready. So, it is very convenient to maker. It was introduced by the Nestle company in nineteen forty six. 22 Sweet Tea Okay, now let's discuss some popular American tea drinks. The first is called sweet tea. It is the classic southern drink. It is double strength tea with lots of sugar. 23 Arnold Palmer The next is the Arnold Palmer. He was a famous golfer who invented a famous drink in the nineteen sixties. This drink consists of half iced tea, and half lemonade. It's great in the summer. 24 Long Island Iced Tea Next is the long island iced tea. It is a popular alcoholic cocktail that can be found on most American drink menus. 25 But it has no tea, so the name is very confusing. It only looks like iced tea. So be careful or you could get very drunk! So, we have made Long Island Iced tea for all of the teachers. 26 Just kidding! It is Arnold Palmer. 27 Conclusion In order to share this information with beginning ELF learners who might take a trip to the US, we have put this information in a handy illustrated booklet. Thanks for listening! We’d love to answer your questions at this time. 28 Works Cited Beverly Dubrin (2012). Tea culture: history , traditions, celebrations, Recipes & More. London: Imagine. • Herbal Iced Tea Recipe Below
Hot weather got you down? – Try this iced tea recipe! What do you tend to drink when the weather is hot? Do you find yourself reaching for drinks like pop, iced tea, and juice? Canada’s Food Guide recommends making water your drink of choice and the World Health Organization warns about the dangers of high added sugar intake such as heart disease, diabetes and dental cavities. But some days you may want something a little more flavorful than water. You could try an infused water recipe - look back to our long weekend barbecue post for some ideas on that. But if you’re really craving something with a bit more flavor than water, consider trying this herbal iced tea recipe below. The Heart & Stroke foundation recommends you consume no more than 10% total calories per day from added sugars, and ideally less than 5%. For someone who eats 2,000 calories a day, 10% is about 48 grams (or 12 teaspoons) of added sugars. Now let’s take a look to see how various beverage options compare to this recommendations… Sugar Content Comparison: 250 mL water 0 g sugar 237 mL Coca cola 26 g sugar 240 mL fruit punch (minute maid) 24 g 250 mL iced tea (lemon nestea) 21.5 g 250 mL of recipe below 7.5 g You can see how quickly we can exceed the recommended maximum added sugar intake when drinking sweetened beverages. This is why health guidelines recommend using water as your main hydration source. But if you want something fun and flavorful for a change of pace this recipe is here for you with less than half the sugar of other sweetened beverages… Ingredients: 4 herbal tea bags (I like to use summer berry tea) 3 green tea bags 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice (to taste) 3 tablespoons honey Steps: 1.

  • Lock Cha Tea House
Lock Cha Tea House Air is heavy and heated and there is a rare break in the June rain, and it is a break of just hours. I am amidst Hong Kong speed - its every-single-day-speed – and I move amidst its controlled waves with a thirst. It is close to lunch hour, and this ‘speed’ is massive increase in tempo from that which I am accustomed. Young children in white school uniforms cruise by in groups, immune and perhaps used to the heat. Miss Tsao and her controlled steps are escorting me towards a place of tea. She negotiates heat, bodies, and heated asphalt with competence and verve. I slightly stagger towards what I’m hoping will be a sanctuary. My destination is one of Hong Kong’s oldest remaining buildings, which houses the more specific purpose of my journey: the Lock Cha Tea House in the Shatin district of Hong Kong. Just above the financial district with its adjoining hub of fashion and suits and its immaculate kind of mania, it reigns as something beyond simply an air- conditioned retreat. Its sign states in smaller letters to the side “Fine teas and tea wares. Dim sum and veg dining”… and that is it. An institution that has happily withstood the frenetic pace of ‘restorative’ and often destructive advances in a city that has perfected speed. It stands proudly and cleanly announcing itself and there is a little feeling of relief as though some small part of me wasn’t expecting it to actually still remain standing. As much as I need it for my thirst, I need it to be there just to satisfy my need for something slightly (if only slightly) timeless.
