Below is new legislation currently passed in Washington’s State Legislature. ICBC carefully watches changes in each of our provinces as well as the Pacific North West US states. They are quick to copy if money can be made..or saved. Your membership in SVABC is important. Government only listens to numbers: receiving one or a few messages is not as impactful as receiving a message from a group that represents thousands of car owners.

• S.B. 6156 unfairly raises the age of vehicles eligible to be registered as collector vehicles from at least 30 years old to at least 40 years old beginning July 1, 2026. • • S.B. 6156 unreasonably increases the initial registration fee for collector vehicles from $35 to $100. • • S.B. 6156 substantially raises the age of vehicles eligible for horseless carriage license plates to vehicles manufactured prior to 1916, removing the current rolling age requirement of 40 years old or older for these plates. • • S.B. 6156 arbitrarily limits the display of DMV-approved year of manufacture (YOM) plates on collector vehicles to 1988 and earlier model years, removing the current rolling age requirement of 30 years old or older for these plates. • • S.B. 6156 makes it more difficult to register legitimate collector vehicles and horseless carriages, which are already limited to club activities, exhibitions, auto shows and occasional pleasure driving. • Overview: SAN-opposed legislation (S.B. 6156) has been introduced in Washington to significantly restrict eligibility of collector vehicles and horseless carriages. Currently, a collector vehicle must be at least 30 years old, while a horseless carriage must be at least 40 years old. If passed, collector vehicles would be required to be at least 40 years old, while horseless carriages would be defined as being manufactured prior to 1916. The bill would also restrict the issuance of year of manufacture (YOM) plates and considerably increase registration fees. While the SAN does not support this legislation, pro-hobby language from a 2018 bill allowing for personalized plates is now included in the most recent amendments. The bill passed the Senate Transportation Committee and awaits consideration in the Senate Rules Committee. Progress 9

She is the only woman in the world to hold a wheel standing licence with the National Hot Rod Association, which she did with her modified 1968 Dodge pickup named Ecstacy, powered by duel flame-throwing, alcohol-powered, 800- horsepower Hemis. It was the mid-2000s when Braddick, long retired from drag racing, was down at the North Vancouver waterfront and noticed the potential that the open, and then mostly vacant, area held for a car show on the North Shore. Sylvia organized the car show at Shipbuilders Square on the North Shore. She has been recognized by the Greater Vancouver Motorsports Pioneers Society for her contributions. She raced a 1950 Ford at the age of 16, after installing dual exhaust. Her first time on a drag strip was when her boyfriend asked if she could drive his souped-up 1940 Ford coupe down the drag strip at the Abbotsford Airport. She would go on to drive a customized 1956 Chevrolet that Stu Braddick modified to go very fast. from an article by Alyn Edwards, driving.ca Blair Qualey, in hi recent article (Sept. 27, 2019, Vanc. Waterloo recently opened a 7 000 sq.ft Autonomous Vehicle Research and Intelligence Laboratory (AVRIL.) The driving simulator is amazing: 6.6 m wide, 210 degree curved screen the size of 2 /12 parking spots, that will simulate everything about the man- machine interface. Operators (drivers) will operate a full-sized, fully functional Chevy Equinox in the comfort of the lab. Elsewhere, a Cadillac SRX will monitor good driving behaviour so programmers can ‘code’ future self-driving cars. Then there is a “crude Chinese-built, 8 person electric shuttle chosen for its lack of sophistication because this makes it easier for project leaders to add their own autonomous hardware.” “Autonomoose” is a Lincoln MKZ with Lida (light detection and ranging,) so eventually they can navigate Canada’s winters. Editor’s note: The reason the University of Waterloo has been able to attract the brightest university graduates and so much research is because “the university doesn’t take any of the research money coming in.” When a company comes to find research partners, only the faculties and the professors are at the negotiating tables. While working on your vehicle, have you ever uttered an expletive, and wondered why auto engineers & designers make things so difficult for you to work on your car? Brian Turner, of driving.ca, made some suggestions for improvement: Install Remote Oil Filters & Drain Plugs: an oil filter adapter mounted on the top of the engine. a flexible tube attached to a secure tap, which can be accessed without lifting the vehicle. Useful stickers like the good old days: a belt-routing diagram, spark plug type, etc. mounted on the underside of the hood, for easy reference. Make Replacing an Air Filter Much Easier: need to be accessible & require no tools to remove. Air filter boxes need to be easy to access, & have easily removable lids. Paint Jack Points on the Undercarriage: bright markings would make this easier. Also mark all the fluid check & fill pints under the hood. Switch to a Few Standardized Fasteners: instead of a dozen r so different types of bolts, screws, clips, push pins, etc—use just a few designs, and toss a bag of extras in the glove box. Make Replacing a Light Bulb Easier: simple access covers & space to reach in to change a bulb. “IF you have to pay a mechanic a day’s wages to replace a bulb, you bought the wrong vehicle.”

37th Annual Hougen Park Picnic Sunday August 16, 2020

High & Nina Swan’s 1936 Ford Cabriolet

Please mark your calendar: Sunday, August 16th, is the date for the 37th annual Hougen Park in Abbotsford.

Our annual budget is very tight: we’re up or down by several hundred dollars each year. We no longer volunteer at Old Car Sunday in the Park in Mission, so we’ve lost those funds. We no longer hold a fundraising charity auction, and..we stopped charging the entrance fee to Hougen Park for members who work at the park.

This year we’ve raised the entrance fee to Hougen Park to $20, rather than raise the membership fee. Have to balance the budget somehow. 18
