Alex had a long and successful career in the banking industry, and although taking early retirement when he began to have health issues, he was still an active member of his community as a local historian and archivist, writing many articles for the parish magazine . From an early age Alex was fascinated by all things motoring related and his collecting habit began as a child when he encountered the new Lesney Matchbox toys - a habit that was to last a lifetime, to encompass just about anything with four wheels. On an early family holiday to France, Alex found a supermarket ‘bargain bin’ of Norev models and his pocket money was soon exchanged for them - this was the beginning of a long lasting interest in collecting plastic model cars: he soon discovered the wonderful models produced in Hong Kong, overlooked at the time but now highly sought after. Another long lasting favourite was the Lone Star / Impy range of models, of which he amassed a fine selection, with some interesting colour variations. Other particular fields of interest included American cars, French cars and vehicles from the former ‘Eastern Bloc’ countries. After surviving a head-on collision in a VW Beetle Alex was left with a great affection for Volkswagens too. Alex regularly attended swapmeets all across the UK and into Europe and was well known to traders and collectors as the person to ask should information on a model be required - he was always happy to share his immense knowledge. Many people will know him from the informative and entertaining articles he wrote for Model Collector magazine in the UK, Passion43 in France and Toy Cars And Models in the USA - always illustrated with excellent photographs of models from his own collection. Alex was the most eclectic of collectors and never felt the need to restrict himself - scale, size, manufacturer, age, country of origin, material or, indeed, quality - from the latest super-detailed resin model to the crudest slushcast, Alex loved them all. He was a great influence and inspiration to many of us . Alex passed away suddenly at home in April 2017, just short of his 70th birthday. It was his wish that his collection, lovingly gathered over his whole lifetime, be sold at auction in the hope that others may continue to enjoy the models that he cherished. If you are attending the auction, or bidding from home, enjoy your day and we hope you find something you like. Carl Inglis Dinky Toys 8. A Hong Kong Dinky Toys 15.
