A content analysis of the Qur’an shows that it lays utmost importance on the realization of justice and conversely the eradication of injustice in society. A his- torical analysis found that social justice was prevalent in Mecca under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad and was also practiced during the period of the first four rightly guided caliphs (Khulafa-e-rashidun). Since then, the successive Muslim majority states have not taken the issue of social justice seriously. These states have failed in taking an active role in uplifting the ethical and moral standards of society. The documentary analysis of the existing 49 states in the Muslim world found majority of these states to have deviated from the real spirit of Islamic social justice falling within the category of “failed states.” Keywords: Islam, social justice, Islamic state, Muslim world, shari’ah INTRODUCTION Islam, as a way of life, is most emphatic on the realization of justice as a goal to be achieved and an ideal to be sought. The Qur’an categorically “commands justice and the doing of good” (Al-Qur’an, 16:90) and warns the believers not to allow “your rancour for a people to cause you to deal unjustly” (Al-Qur’an, 5:8). There are many verses in the Qur’an relating to justice. The word ‘adl meaning justice, occurs in 28 places; the equiva- lent word qist meaning balance, occurs 27 times; and the word mizan meaning scale and its derivatives occur 23 times. A word referring direct- ly to carrying out justice, that is qada and its derivatives, occur in 52 plac- es. The word hukm and its derivatives, meaning ordinances, command- ments, judgments and decisions occur eighty-nine times. This commit- ment to justice is accentuated to the utmost when Allah (SWT) declares justice as the seal of His illustrious speech: “The word of your Lord does find its fulfillment in truth and in justice….” (Al-Qur’an, 6: 115). Accord- ing to Imam Ibn al-Qayyim: Allah has sent down Prophets and revealed Books to establish justice, which is the fundamental and basic objective of the whole creation. Everything revealed by Allah 7 Abdul Rashid Moten / Social Justice, Islamic State and Muslim Countries proves that the ultimate goal of revelation is the establishment of a just and bal- anced way of life. In whatever way the law may be made it must aim at establishing justice and fair play. (1977: 109) This study analyses the nature of justice in Islam and the structure it prescribes for the realization of justice. Next, it looks at some of the at- tempts made in the past to achieve justice as conceptualized in the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAS). The third section is devot- ed to examining the status of social justice in the contemporary Muslim world. The concluding section summarizes the argument and its implica- tions for the realization of justice in the Muslim world. JUSTICE IN ISLAM ‘Adl literally means to straighten and be upright, to move from an unde- sirable to a position that is desirable; it also means to equalize; and final- ly, it means balance and equilibrium. ‘Adl is the most important principle in Islam and Muslims are required to “stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even though it be against yourselves…” (Al-Qur’an, 4: 135). The Qur’an commands the believers to be just for, it says, “justice is next to piety” (Al-Qur’an, 5: 8). It also enjoins them to observe the law and obey those appointed “to judge among men with justice” (Sad, 38: 24). The prophets came with “the Book and the Balance (of Rights and Wrongs) that men may stand forth in justice” (Al-Qur’an, 57: 25). The Qur’an uses multiple words like sunnat Allah (the way or tradition of Al- lah), mizan (scale), qist and ‘adl (both meaning justice), to emphasize the significance of justice. ‘Adl in Islam has several dimensions. First, it has a Divine basis, rooted in morality, and guidance revealed by Allah (SWT). Therefore, the first principle of ‘adl is to relate to and recognize Allah (SWT) as the Creator, Cherisher and Sustainer of the universe. The se- cond principle is related to the equality of human beings. Third, it re- quires social, political and cultural life to be based upon a set of moral values and principles. These moral values are not merely moral impera- tives but they also form the basis of legal and political norms. Finally, justice is a process through which people redress injuries and grievances, establish rights and struggle for the removal of exploitation, oppression and injustice from society. 8 Cultura. International Journal of Philosophy of Culture and Axiology 10(1)/2013: 7–24 JUSTICE MEANS SOCIAL JUSTICE Islam’s approach to justice is comprehensive and all embracing, non- partisan and universal. As Sayyid Qutb explains: [It] embraces all sides of life and all aspects of activity. It is concerned alike with per- ception and conduct, with the heart and the conscience.

    ETIQUETTES OF ZIYARAT WHAT IS ZIYARAT? Ziyarat basically means, to visit the Shrines of the Holy Masumeen (as) or any other holy personality with proximity to ahlulbayt (as). The Holy Prophet (saw) & Imams (as) have highly emphasized the importance of Ziyarat, in order to enable the follower to come closer to the Masumeen, to learn from their character and thereby improve their lives. In order for the Za’er (Visitor) to make his trip successful he needs to ask & understand several issues: HOW DOES ZIYARAT AFFECT OUR LIFE? -Firstly, we go to the Shrine, and we declare and remind ourselves, the HIGH status enjoyed by the Imams: •That they are perfect models •That they are lovers of truth •That they are examples of nobility, justice, of good character, of good minds, or pure thoughts, of pure feelings, of cooperation, of love for humanity, and of all the noble and perfect virtues. -Once we have realized fully, this high position of Imams, we try to provoke feelings in our hearts which God has naturally created, whenever we see beauty we are attracted, whenever we see perfection we are attracted, whenever we see models of goodness, justice & virtue, naturally we seek to follow. -So having reminded ourselves of the virtues of the Imams: •We then pledge our allegiance, •We then swear our obedience, •We then make a covenant to love them, to follow them, and to always keep their pleasure ahead of our pleasure. It is these ideas and themes which are of paramount importance. They should always be on the top of our minds as we participate in the rituals of ziyarat.

    MIRACLES OF ZIYARAT ASHURA BISMILLAHIR RAHMANIR RAHIM Ziyarat Ashura was sent by Almighty Allah to the Holy Prophet (s.a.) through angel Jibrail to console him on the unique tragedy of Karbala. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.) said: “The difficulties I had to face were unlike anything faced by the earlier prophets (a.s.).” Regarding this tradition, Ayatullah Shaykh Iraqi writes that, here the Prophet (s.a.) apart from his other afflictions, wishes to tell us about a tribulation in particular that was unique in nature, in the sense that none of the previous prophet were subjected to it. And that tribulation was the hostile treatment meted out to the Ahl ul Bayt (a.s.) after the demise of Prophet (s.a.). Among the hardships that the Ahl ul Bayt (a.s.) were made to face, was Karbala. Allah had informed the Prophet (s.a.) about the incident of Karbala through Jibrail. The Prophet (s.a.) was always very grievous and sorrowful about the incidents that were to follow him. So Allah (as to console him) taught the prophet (s.a.) Ziyarat Ashura and enumerated its benefits in the world and the hereafter. And Allah took it up on Himself to grant all the requests and ease all hardships through its recitation. 1 Allah gave this Ziyarat to Jibrail and asked him to present it to the Prophet (s.a.), so as to gladden the Ahl ul Bayt (a.s.) and their Shias, the reciters of this Ziyarat would be contented and pleased with its benefits in the hereafter and gain relief from the adversities of this world.

    User Experience Analysis of the Qutb Shahi Tombs Hyderabad, India Allison James, SmarchS AKPIA 2015 This research was made possible by funding from the Aga Khan Program in Islamic Architecture Travel Grant, a grant from MIT India and the Harold Horowitz Research Fund. Additionally, I would like to thank the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, India for their generous support in the form of housing, transportation and staff support and guidance from the AKTC conservation team. In June of 2014, and January of 2015, I traveled to Hyderabad, India to conduct field research with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The AKTC is in their second year of a ten- year project, to conserve the tombs and gardens of the Qutb Shahi Sultans on a necropolis, which contains the tombs of all eight Qutb Shahi sultans (1518-1647.) The initial goal of the project was to use experiential analysis of the current use of the site to reveal different types of adaptations in conservation plans. By using methods of participatory photography, videography and interviews, I collected documentation related to user experience of the site. User experience analysis using the Video Abstraction Tool. Photo taken from the tomb of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah (1580-1611), Allison James 2014. Mid-way through the summer, the AKTC asked if I would be interested in investigating the original design of each garden surrounding the tombs of four kings on the upper terrace of the complex. After some searching, I gained a richer appreciation for what these other layers would mean to the conservation of the cultural landscape.

    Imam Ali Zainul-Abedeen SA’s Dua for Sehhat and Aafiyat Prayer for Health and Wellbeing Imam Ali Zainul-AbedeenSA is the third imam—after Hasan ImamSA and Husain ImamSA—in the progeny of Rasulullah SA and Amirul Mumineen Maulana AliSA. He is widely known as ‘Sajjaad’ (one who performs many sajdas) in light of the 1000 rakaats of namaaz he prayed every night. He composed innumerable priceless duas invoking Allah Taala’s rehmat for all aspects of life here and hereafter. These duas have been compiled in a book called Sahifa Sajjadiyya. This Sahifa is a priceless treasure for every mumin who wants to pray to Allah. Not only do its duas teach us how to supplicate Allah Ta’ala in prayer, but they also guide us toward what we must pray for in order to lead a life of peace and prosperity in this world and the next. This particular dua is one in which Imam Ali Zainul-AbedeenSA prays to Allah Ta’ala for good health and wellbeing. Amirul MumineenSA in one of his kalaams says that the biggest blessing after ‘imaan’ (belief in Allah and his wali) is good health. In this dua, Imam Ali Zainul AbedeenSA supplicates Allah Ta’ala to grant him good health in body and spirit, and protect him from all that is evil. He begins the dua with salawaat on Mohammed and Aale Mohammed and repeats this salawaat several times during the dua. Our Hudaat KiraamSA have taught us that praying salawaat before, in between, and after a dua ensures that the dua reaches Allah Ta’ala.

Peacock and Dr. Lauren G. Leve) Based on thirteen months of intensive fieldwork at two primary sites in India, this dissertation describes how adherents of shrine-based Sufism assert their identity as Indian Muslims in the contexts of public debates over religion and belonging in India, and of reformist critiques of their Islamic beliefs and practices. Faced with opposition to their mode of Islam from reformist Muslim groups, and the challenges to their sense of national identity as members of a religious minority in India, I argue that adherents of shrine-based Sufism claim the sacred space of the Sufi shrine as a venue where both the core values of Islam and of India are given form and reproduced. For these adherents, contemporary shrine-based Sufism is a dynamic and creative force that manifests essential aspects of Islam that are also fundamental Indian values, and which are critical to the health of the nation today. The dissertation reveals that contested identities and internal religious debates can only be understood and interpreted within the broader framework of national and global debates over Islam and over the place of Islam in the Indian polity that shape them.

    Chapter 1 Sufi Regional Cults in South Asia and Indonesia: Towards a Comparative Analysis Pnina Werbner Introduction To compare Sufi orders across different places separated by thousands of miles of sea and land, and by radically different cultural milieus, is in many senses to seek the global in the local rather than the local in the global. Either way, charting difference and similarity in Sufism as an embodied tradition re- quires attention, beyond mystical philosophical and ethical ideas, to the ritual performances and religious organizational patterns that shape Sufi orders and cults in widely separated locations. We need, in other words, to seek to under- stand comparatively four interrelated symbolic complexes: first, the sacred division of labor—the ritual roles that perpetuate and reproduce a Sufi order focused on a particular sacred center; second, sacred exchanges between places and persons, often across great distances; third, the sacred ‘region’, its catchment area, and the sanctified central places that shape it; and fourth, the sacred indexical events—the rituals—that co-ordinate and revitalize organiza- tional and symbolic unities and enable managerial and logistical planning and decision making. Comparison requires that we examine the way in which these four dimensions of ritual sanctification and performance are linked, and are embedded in a particular symbolic logic and local environment. In this chapter I use the notion of ‘cult’ in its anthropological sense, i.e. to refer to organized ritual and symbolic practices performed in space and over time, often cyclically, by a defined group of devotees, kinsmen, initiates, sup- plicants, pilgrims, or disciples.

This Sufi based approach that has helped to confront stringent and narrow ideologies, can serve as an antidote to the current malady of violence and disequilibrium in today’s chaotic world.

Hajj (pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca), on the one hand, and ziyara (visits to shrines), on the other, are seen by most people, devout or not, as distinct social practices and not to be compared or thought in relation to one another. Nevertheless, anthropologists and historians of the Muslim world have shown how the two share a common symbolic history and similar practices. The numerous local pilgrimages are always emically considered secondary to the pilgrimage to Mecca but despite the clear distinction in local discourse, they may under certain conditions be presented as pilgrimages of substitution.
