Robert Kirkman was field- ing offers to adapt his work for the screen from a variety of noted directors, screenwriters, and other production entities. “It was always stuff that I wasn’t really into,” he recalls. “They wanted to turn it into an action movie. They wanted to incorporate su- perzombies. There were different aspects to The Walking Dead that they just didn’t seem to get.” The early success of the comic book allowed Kirkman to be a bit more selective about whom he wanted to partner with in realizing his vision on-screen. Flashback to another time: Rick opens up to his partner, Shane, about the problems in his marriage. He’s concerned about a recent argument he had with his wife, Lori, in front of their son. The conversation is interrupted when a call for backup comes in from the state police. Rick and Shane race off to intercept suspects in a high-speed chase. During the melee, Rick is shot through the chest and everything goes white. • Transforming the Criminal Justice System Through Science
TRANSFORMING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM THROUGH SCIENCE THE INNOCENCE PROJECT 2015 ANNUAL REPORT Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University Lewis Fogle wanders in the wilderness. Photo: Michael Henninger / © Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 2016, all rights reserved, reprinted with permission. The Innocence Project was founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University to assist prisoners who could be proven innocent through DNA testing. To date, more than 300 people in the United States have been exonerated by DNA testing, including 20 who served time on death row. These people served an average of 14 years in prison before exoneration and release. The Innocence Project’s full-time staff attorneys and Cardozo clinic students provided direct representation or critical assistance in most of these cases. The Innocence Project’s groundbreaking use of DNA technology to free innocent people has provided irrefutable proof that wrongful convictions are not isolated or rare events but instead arise from systemic defects. Now an independent nonprofit organization closely affiliated with Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the Innocence Project’s mission is nothing less than to free the staggering number of innocent people who remain incarcerated and to bring substantive reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment.
