  • WITH OUR DEMONS a Thesis Submitted By
1 MONSTROSITIES MADE IN THE INTERFACE: THE IDEOLOGICAL RAMIFICATIONS OF ‘PLAYING’ WITH OUR DEMONS A Thesis submitted by Jesse J Warren, BLM Student ID: u1060927 For the award of Master of Arts (Humanities and Communication) 2020 Thesis Certification Page This thesis is entirely the work of Jesse Warren except where otherwise acknowledged. This work is original and has not previously been submitted for any other award, except where acknowledged. Signed by the candidate: __________________________________________________________________ Principal Supervisor: _________________________________________________________________ Abstract Using procedural rhetoric to critique the role of the monster in survival horror video games, this dissertation will discuss the potential for such monsters to embody ideological antagonism in the ‘game’ world which is symptomatic of the desire to simulate the ideological antagonism existing in the ‘real’ world. Survival video games explore ideology by offering a space in which to fantasise about society's fears and desires in which the sum of all fears and object of greatest desire (the monster) is so terrifying as it embodies everything 'other' than acceptable, enculturated social and political behaviour. Video games rely on ideology to create believable game worlds as well as simulate believable behaviours, and in the case of survival horror video games, to simulate fear. This dissertation will critique how the games Alien:Isolation, Until Dawn, and The Walking Dead Season 1 construct and themselves critique representations of the ‘real’ world, specifically the way these games position the player to see the monster as an embodiment of everything wrong and evil in life - everything 'other' than an ideal, peaceful existence, and challenge the player to recognise that the very actions required to combat or survive this force potentially serve as both extensions of existing cultural ideology and harbingers of ideological resistance across two worlds – the ‘real’ and the ‘game’.

  • 'Walking Dead' Returns
Everyone's Sheathing Their Weapons When 'Walking Dead' Returns 09.10.2018 When AMC's monster hit, The Walking Dead, returns for season nine, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his crew have recovered after the all-out war against Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his Saviors. In the season-eight finale, Rick decided to do what he thought his late son, Carl (Chandler Riggs), would have done and spared Negan's life, but that was not what everyone in his group would have chosen. Now it's a year and a half later, and both groups have rebuilt and are living in a tentative peace. The survivors are getting further away from the apocalyptic sickness that ended civilization as they knew it, and man-made structures are fading and failing as the survivors strive ever on. In the trailer above, each cast member is portrayed with a mesmerizing kaleidoscope effect designed by creative agency Bacon & Sons. All of them are seen sheathing their weapons, indicating that the time to fight has ended-at least for now. Later in the season, the Whisperers, who fans knows from the comics, will show up, led by Alpha who is played by Samantha Morton. Season nine-which returns Sunday, Oct. 7 at 9/8 c on AMC-also will be star Andrew Lincoln's last. The premiere will run a super-sized hour and a half and be followed by a new episode of aftershow Talking Dead. The Walking Dead is based on the graphic novel created by robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics.

It is argued here that dystopian fiction such as The Walking Dead offers an opportunity for a popular criminology to address what criminologists have described as our discipline’s aetiological crisis in theorizing harmful and violent subjectivities. The social relations, conditions and subjectivities displayed in dystopian fiction are in fact an exacerbation or extrapolation of our present norms, values and subjectivities, rather than a departure from them, and there are numerous real-world criminological parallels depicted within The Walking Dead’s postapocalyptic world. As such, the show possesses a hard kernel of Truth that is of significant utility in progressing criminological theories of violence and harmful subjectivity. The article therefore explores the ideological function of dystopian fiction as the fetishistic disavowal of the dark underbelly of liberal capitalism; and views the show as an example of the ultra-realist concepts of special liberty, the criminal undertaker and the pseudopacification process in action. In drawing on these cutting- edge criminological theories, it is argued that we can use criminological analyses of popular culture to provide incisive insights into the real-world relationship between violence and capitalism, and its proliferation of harmful subjectivities.

  • “A Jill Sandwich”. Gender Representation in Zombie Videogames
“A Jill Sandwich”. Gender Representation in Zombie Videogames. Esther MacCallum-Stewart From Resident Evil (Capcom 1996 - present) to The Walking Dead (Telltale Games 2012-4), women are represented in zombie games in ways that appear to refigure them as heroines in their own right, a role that has traditionally been represented as atypical in gaming genres. These women are seen as pioneering – Jill Valentine is often described as one of the first playable female protagonists in videogaming, whilst Clementine and Ellie from The Walking Dead and The Last of Us (Naughty Dog 2013) are respectively, a young child and a teenager undergoing coming of age rites of passage in the wake of a zombie apocalypse. Accompanying them are male protagonists who either compliment these roles, or alternatively provide useful explorations of masculinity in games that move beyond gender stereotyping. At first, these characters appear to disrupt traditional readings of gender in the zombie genre, avoiding the stereotypical roles of final girl, macho hero or princess in need of rescuing. Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield and Ada Wong of the Resident Evil series are resilient characters who often have independent storyarcs within the series, and possess unique ludic attributes that make them viable choices for the player (for example, a greater amount of inventory). Their physical appearance - most usually dressed in combat attire - additionally means that they partially avoid critiques of pandering to the male gaze, a visual trope which dominates female representation in gaming. Ellie and Clementine introduce the player to non-sexualised portrayals of women who ultimately emerge as survivors and protagonists, and further episodes of each game jettison their male counterparts to focus on each of these young adult’s development.

  • Murder Is No Accident
MURDER IS NO ACCIDENT CHAPTER 1 When Maggie Greene heard a noise in the big old house below her, she sucked in her breath to listen. It wouldn’t do for her to get caught up in the tower room at Miss Fonda’s house. It didn’t matter that Miss Fonda had told her it was okay. The old lady’s face lit up when she remembered hiding out in the tower room when she was fifteen like Maggie. But Maggie’s mother wouldn’t think Maggie had any business inside the house unless they were cleaning it for Miss Fonda. So Maggie kept her visits to the tower room a secret. After Miss Fonda had to go to the Gentle Care Home, Maggie’s mother did say Maggie could come feed Miss Fonda’s calico cat, Miss Marble, who lived out in the garden shed. But the cat excuse wouldn’t help if Maggie got caught inside the house. She’d be in trouble. The thing was not to get caught. So Maggie stayed very still and listened for what she’d heard. Or thought she heard. No sounds now. Old houses could creak and groan for no reason. Maggie crept over to the window and felt better when the circular drive down below was empty. Maggie rubbed a spot clean on the glass with a corner of her sweater. No telling how long since these windows had been washed. The years of grime didn’t let in much of the October sunshine. Maggie shivered and pulled her sweater tighter around her.

He’s curled fetal on one of several foul mattresses in a derelict bedroom. Milky weak light penetrates threadbare curtains. The room looks like landfill. A shit bucket in the corner teems with FLIES. Ian’s in loose boxers, ribs pressed pale against blue-veined skin. He shakes with the morning chill, and his high’s wane, BELT looped around his bicep above the INJECTION SITE. He looks dead, the room his hell. There are other crates, other mattresses around him, but Ian is alone. Sole tenant. His WORKS are scattered on top of a nearby MILK CRATE -- needle, scorched spoon, Bic lighter. There’s a THUD downstairs. VOICES. Ian opens his eyes, red from broken vessels. Panic. Horror. Furniture CRASHES. More SCREAMS, terrified SCREAMS. Then GUNSHOTS. ONE... then ONE more. CRASHING bodies. One final, piercing SCREAM. Then silence. The silence worse.
