Diversity encompasses the varied and unique identities, experiences, perspectives, and cultural communities of a book’s main and supporting characters, whose attributes include (but are not limited to) race, ethnicity, gender, abilities, sexuality, class, religion, and family structure. All children benefit from seeing themselves reflected in what they read, and from seeing characters with different identities depicted accurately and without stereotypes in texts and/or illustrations. The CBC values representations of characters who are change agents and advocates for social justice, inclusivity, and equity. In accordance with the Committee’s goal of modeling proper sourcing of nonfiction writing, all listed information books for children nine and older must contain supporting references including, at a minimum, sources, quote attributions, and photo credits. Book annotations may also include the term “back matter” to indicate that there is additional reference material provided.     Complexity in the Comic and Graphic Novel Medium: Inquiry Through Bestselling Batman Stories PAUL A. CRUTCHER DAPTATIONS OF GRAPHIC NOVELS AND COMICS FOR MAJOR MOTION pictures, TV programs, and video games in just the last five Ayears are certainly compelling, and include the X-Men, Wol- verine, Hulk, Punisher, Iron Man, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Watchmen, 300, 30 Days of Night, Wanted, The Surrogates, Kick-Ass, The Losers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and more. Nevertheless, how many of the people consuming those products would visit a comic book shop, understand comics and graphic novels as sophisticated, see them as valid and significant for serious criticism and scholarship, or prefer or appreciate the medium over these film, TV, and game adaptations? Similarly, in what ways is the medium complex according to its ad- vocates, and in what ways do we see that complexity in Batman graphic novels? Recent and seminal work done to validate the comics and graphic novel medium includes Rocco Versaci’s This Book Contains Graphic Language, Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, and Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics. Arguments from these and other scholars and writers suggest that significant graphic novels about the Batman, one of the most popular and iconic characters ever produced—including Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s Dark Knight Returns, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum, and Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Killing Joke—can provide unique complexity not found in prose-based novels and traditional films. In the literature, it is admitted that these bubbles generated from active nucleate sites grow up and depart from the heating surface due to buoyancy and inertia. Wang et al. [1] observed an alternative situation: In water or alcohol subcooled baths, bubbles can slide along a horizontal heated platinum thin wire. They also addressed other aspects of the problem such as the interactions between bubbles (bouncing or fusion) [2]. We performed experiments using a 5-cm-long horizontal constantan wire (diameter φ ∈ [0.1; 1] mm) in a 1.5-cS silicone oil subcooled bath. This is a total wetting situation. The resistive wire is heated up through Joule’s effect with a current setting up to 64 A. The injected power P can thus reach 200 W. For P = 10 W and φ = 0.2 mm, as bubbles nucleate on the wire surface, they spontaneously move along it without preferential sense.

    = FAST FACTS = Alaska Native Perspectives on the Civil Rights Struggle As we engage in our research and policy work, the Alaska Native Policy Center at First Alaskans Institute sometimes collects quick information from readily available sources that others may also find useful. Although we cannot do it all the time, when we do we will share it via our website and social networks for others to access. We make no guarantees about the accuracy or currency of the information, but will make sure to include citation and important dates for others to pursue if they are interested. Framing the Topic Civil Rights are an ever advancing state of governmental understanding and practice to build equity into the systems that operate all around us and create the web of ‘civilization’ our society is supposedly built around here in the US Civil Rights on one side has to do with how the government behaves, while racial equity is about what society allows and how we behave with one another. Civil Rights then become the enforcement measure to ensure protected populations are indeed ‘protected’. o For Alaska Natives, Civil Rights have been an ever advancing work in progress and are critically linked to racial equity. While there have been advances, moving us away from very overt actions against Alaska Natives (e.g., the “No Dogs or Natives Allowed” signs, or being barred from ‘Pioneer Homes’, etc.), there have also been set-backs that continue to highlight the extreme difference in the results of government, as seen by its impacts on the various people supposedly ‘protected’ by Civil Rights and racial equality.

Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s.

    How To Read A Book By Mortimer J. Adler And Charles Van Doren 1972 1 Preface How to Read a Book was first published in the early months of 1940. To my surprise and, I confess, to my delight, it immediately became a best seller and remained at the top of the nationwide best-seller list for more than a year. Since 1940, it has continued to be widely circulated in numerous printings, both hard- cover and paperback, and it has been translated into other languages—French, Swedish, German, Spanish, and Italian. Why, then, attempt to recast and rewrite the book for the present generation of readers? The reasons for doing so lie in changes that have taken place both in our society in the last thirty years and in the subject itself. Today many more of the young men and women who complete high school enter and complete four years of college; a much larger proportion of the population has become literate in spite of or even because of the popularity of radio and television. There has been a shift of interest from the reading of fiction to the reading of nonfiction. The educators of the country have acknowledged that teaching the young to read, in the most elementary sense of that word, is our paramount educational problem. A recent Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, designating the seventies as the Decade of Reading, has dedicated federal funds in support of a wide variety of efforts to improveproficiency in this basic skill, and many of those efforts have scored some success at the level at which children are initiated into the art of reading.
