Car owner George Wade and photographer Bill Hughes were killed when hit by Hartz’s car during practice – they ran onto the track to help extinguish a fire under Boyer’s car. Note that two fires lit on the board oval on the 17th November required overnight work to replace the south turn of the track, and resulted in the posting of guards at night to prevent a repeat. Hartz was absolved of responsibility for the accident at a coroner’s inquest on the 1st December. Other US events of 1923

“It is probable that the great majority of people who went to the automobile race in Kansas City on the Fourth did so with the expectation if not in the hope of getting a great thrill by seeing one or more of the racers killed. Serves them right that more spectators were hurt in the jam of the big crowd than there were drivers injured on the race track.”

Race 2 Doc Feulger Marmon R Earl Gray Studebaker fatal accident

Gray was chasing the Marmon when with five laps to go his car swerved into the fence on the back stretch, and although it continued it had a plank of wood wedged in the front running gear, dragging on the ground and interfering with the steering. Two laps later the plank jammed the steering causing the car to then crash and overturn twice. During the first roll Gray ducked under the steering roll, but then the steering column snapped, and during the second roll Gray’s head was caught between the ground the the back of the bucket seats. Gray died five minutes after reaching the operating table. His mechanician, Rex Edmonds, was painfully scalded by hot water from the radiator but was otherwise OK.

The results aren’t known. Full page advert taken out in the Indianapolis Star, 29th January 1923, against a state bill to prohibit sports events on Memorial Day. On the 27th February, Perry Faulkner, state commander of the American Legion, stated that he would revoke the charter of the Indianapolis Skidemore-Dean post. His statement followed the post’s refusal to surrender its charter after he had ordered it to do so as a penalty for its opposition to the Memorial Day bill pending in the state legislature. On the 6th March, Governor McCray vetoed the bill on the grounds that it was class legislation and unconstitutional. The state senate sustained the veto. San Diego, CA

22nd February 1923 – 1.2 mile course

Eddie Pullen was disqualified from an old car $50 claiming race when the rear end dropped out of his car “Red Raven”. He attributed the accident to sudden acceleration. The car was one which had been unearthed in the bed of a creek, where it had been buried by a flood. Pullen’s disqualification left 19 entrants. Each owner drove his own car and signed an agreement to sell it for $50 when the race was over. The trophy was a beer stein, and was won by a 1911 Stevens-Duryea called the Sierra Club Special.

Tarkington arrived in Fresno on the evening of the 18th with a bullet hole in the back of his car. Traffic Officer Beagle caught him speeding near Lebec, although Tarkington and his three passengers denied this, and proceeded to chase them. Beagle later claimed that he warned Tarkington with four siren calls, before firing three shots to force Tarkington to stop. Tarkington, thinking that he was under attack accelerated away, and upon arrival in Bakersfield he was arrested on seventeen different charges. Foulke, who was following behind Tarkington, was stopped and forced to give a ride to another officer to make sure that the arrest could be made. After depositing a $500 cash bail with Judge Edward V.Jones, Tarkington was allowed to continue his trip. Eight other drivers were also cited to appear for arraignment after the completion of the event. On returning to court on the 21st May, Tarkington pled guilty to three traffic violations, and was sentenced to 10 days in county jail and a fine of $100. Marshall, MI

A few moments later, a wheel thrown from another racing car struck Michael Schumacher, 40, and his sister-in-law, Mrs Tina A.Shephard, 50, and Miss Thelmer Spoer, 18, spectators. Mrs Shephard died on the 28th October from her injuries. On the 30th October, Riley Nation, father of Charles E.Nation, was arrested in Worthington on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill Earl Johnson, half owner of the car Nation was driving at the time of his death. Johnson claimed that Riley Nation attempted to kill him with a hammer on Thursday 25th, after learning of his son's death. The father was claimed to think that Johnson was responsible for his son's participation in the race at Princeton. The race was a feature event of a Ku Klux Klan picnic. Johnson said that while he was calling Princeton over the telephone Thursday, to get the details of the accident and giving directions to the undertaker, Riley Nation sneaked upon him from behind and would have killed him if he had not been stopped by bystanders. When Johnson became aware of what was happening, he ran, and Nation threw the hammer at him. He ducked in time. Nation has been released under a $1,000 bond signed by J.E.Hubbell.

Other Matters of the Year

 On the 18th February, Louis Disbrow won the feature 1650 class speedboat race on Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, LA, in Century Tire, owned by Charles J.Venn, covering the 15 mile course in 17m17s, defeating the world champion boat Miss Chicago. The races were run by the Mississippi Valley Power Boat Association. He was also to race Baby Bauer in the Mississippi Valley Power Boat Association regatta in Burlington on the 2nd-4th July.

 On the 27th February, Dario Resta was arrested in downtown Indianapolis for vagrancy. A man named D.Russ Wirth used the name when registering at the hotel as he thought that the driver’s name might give him more prestige in obtaining employment.

 Driver Ralph Ormsby of Bluffton, IN, was attacked in Indianapolis on the 27th February. Ormsby was found at a local hospital suffering from knife wounds following a report to police by a person who refused to reveal his identity. Police were unable to learn who had taken the race driver to the hospital and Ormsby refused to make any statement regarding the affair.

 On the 23rd March, speedway promoter William Pickens named the American Automobile Association as a defendant in a suit for $75,000 files in superior court in Los Angeles. Pickens based the action on the allegation that he was barred from the Fresno Speedway on the 7th November after being charged with sending out false publicity regarding tests of a racing car. According to the complaint. H.E.Patterson, manager of the Fresno speedway, sent a telegram to the association's contest board, saying that Pickens was disqualified for false publicity. This telegram, Pickens charged, caused the AAA to refuse any further dealings with him and led to heavy losses in his promotion of proposed speedways in Pennsylvania, and Cleveland. In addition, he declared that Louis Chevrolet, race driver, and an automobile company of Indianapolis were also influenced to decline further contracts with him. Pickens asserted he did not issue any false publicity. Patterson denied the charges, stating that there had been no speedway events in Fresno since 30th September 1922, and that no promoter had applied for use of the track on the 7th November. Patterson said that he had received notice from the AAA of the barring of Pickens, but that it was not on account of the speedway.

 Plans were discussed in a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce of Deming, NM, on the 24th April to hold an auto race on the 4th July. The idea was to construct a 1 mile track on a tract of land owned by the city, moving a part of the golf links inside the circuit, together with a horse circuit and a ball diamond. It is not known if this happened.

 It was announced that the 4th July celebrations in Humboldt, IA, were to feature a half-mile reverse race for Ford’s and a five mile race, but reports of the days’ activities make no mention of any auto races having taken place.

 On the 29th August in Richmond, VA, a corporation headed by A.M.Fisher of Indianapolis was granted a charter under a plan to construct a motor speedway rivalling the famous racing oval at Indianapolis. The corporation was known as the Richmond Motor Speedway Incorporated, and had a maximum stock of $1,000,000. Construction of a general amusement park and airplane landing were authorized in the charter in addition to the automobile race track. It is not known what happened to this venture.

 On the 15th September, Louis Chevrolet was arrested for speeding after a squad of sheriff’s deputies chased him on the national road west of Indianapolis. Chevrolet said that he failed to recognise his pursuers as officers, and outdistanced them, but they later found him at the Indianapolis Gun Club. Before a justice of the peace the next day, Chevrolet, charged with driving at 40 mph, entered a plea of guilty and was fined $40.

 On the 26th October, in Fort Wayne, IN, Ralph Ormsby was fined $100 and sentenced to serve 30 days in jail by Judge Sol A.Wood, of the circuit court, for driving at a high rate of speed through the city streets while intoxicated. Ormsby, who had been fined $50 and given 30 days in police court on the charge, took an appeal only to get $50 added to his fine.
