  • Somerset Records Discography
Somerset/Stereo Fidelity by David Edwards, Patrice Eyries & Mike Callahan © 2018 by Mike Callahan Somerset/Stereo Fidelity Records Discography Somerset Records was a division of Miller International Co. located in Media Pennsylvania. David L Miller was the President and had previously owned, Essex Records and Trans-World Records. Somerset was started in 1958. The output of the label was popular, jazz and classical. Of the first 63 releases on Somerset, 62 of them were straight reissues of Trans-World albums. After Somerset/Stereo Fidelity, Miller was involved with two other budget labels Alshire and Sutton. The Sales Manager was Joe Martin and Miller handled A&R. Somerset was a budget label whose albums listed for sale for $1.98, when most albums sold for $3.98 in the ‘50s and ‘60s. A subsidiary label was Stereo Fidelity, the only difference between the two labels was that the monaural record was a Somerset and the stereo record was on the Stereo Fidelity label. The numbers were the same. Main Series Canadian LP’s in this series did not use the last two zeros, for example SF-12700 was SF-127, leading to endless confusion about the Somerset release numbers. • Ciprian Porumbescu, Creator and Protagonist of the Romanian Operetta
DOI: 10.2478/ajm-2020-0003 Artes. Journal of Musicology Ciprian Porumbescu, creator and protagonist of the Romanian operetta ROSINA CATERINA FILIMON “George Enescu” National University of Arts Iaşi ROMANIA∗ Abstract: Musical-theatrical pieces of the nineteenth century, propagated by Italian, French and German troops, were an inspiration for Romanian composers. They will create similar fashionable musical theatre genres, in Romanian, for entertainment purposes. Works placed on the border between vaudeville and the lyrical genre can be identified in the creation of the newly emerging genre of operetta: such pieces are the compositions of Alexandru Flechtenmacher, Eduard Wachmann, Eduard Caudella. In the cultural atmosphere of the time, patriotic musician Ciprian Porumbescu (1853-1883) would find the perfect way to put a longstanding artistic wish into practice: to compose an operetta, following the success of his humorous musical-theatre pieces Cisla and Candidatul Linte [Candidate Linte]. A multifarious personality, a lover of folklore and of his nation, Ciprian Porumbescu – one of the founders of the national school of music – contributed to the authenticity and identity of the Romanian musical language through his extensive works; one important contribution is the composition of the first Romanian cultivated operetta Crai Nou [New Moon] (1882). As a tribute to his art, on the centenary of his birth, the creator of the operetta Crai nou becomes the protagonist of the operetta Lăsați-mă să cânt [Let me sing] (1954) by Gherase Dendrino, set during the time of the staging of Porumbescuʼs musical-dramatic work. Crai Nou and Lăsați-mă să cânt are highlights of the Romanian lyrical theatre, from the artistic past and present, and hold their position as musical pieces frequently performed and received with interest and enthusiasm.

  • Bridging the Gap Between Opera and Musical Theatre
The Crossover Opera Singer: Bridging the Gap Between Opera and Musical Theatre D.M.A. DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Keyona Willis-Lynam, M.M Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2015 D.M.A. Document Committee: J. Robin Rice, Advisor Joe Duchi Kristine Kearney Copyright by Keyona Willis-Lynam 2015 Abstract For decades, a divide has existed between opera and musical theatre, with the lesser value being placed upon the latter. Singers, from the start of their training, are told to choose a genre if one wants to achieve any type of singing success. This type of division creates a chasm of isolation and misunderstanding between the musical styles. From academia, to the stage, to the concert goer, one’s allegiance to opera versus musical theatre has been built upon a firm foundation of contrast, without acknowledging that both genres have ties to one another. As a result, most teaching of singing is done from the perspective of the classical singing style, with little to no mention of how to efficiently and healthily sing in a musical theatre style. In today’s social and economic climate, opera houses across the United States and abroad are seeing a decline in ticket sales; some have been able to restructure to survive, while others are shutting down. Companies are seeking a variety of ways to stay connected to the community; one avenue that has produced an area of contention is the addition of musical theatre productions to the season’s billing.
