Merten Kai / What Literature Knows This volume sheds light on the nexus between knowledge and literature. Arranged What Literature Knows historically, contributions address both popular and canonical English and Antje Kley US-American writing from the early modern period to the present. They focus on how historically specific texts engage with epistemological questions in relation to Forays into Literary Knowledge Production material and social forms as well as representation. The authors discuss literature as a culturally embedded form of knowledge production in its own right, which deploys narrative and poetic means of exploration to establish an independent and sometimes dissident archive. The worlds that imaginary texts project are shown to open up alternative perspectives to be reckoned with in the academic articulation and public discussion of issues in economics and the sciences, identity formation and wellbeing, legal rationale and political decision-making. What Literature Knows The Editors Antje Kley is professor of American Literary Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. Her research interests focus on aesthetic forms and cultural functions of narrative, both autobiographical and fictional, in changing media environments between the eighteenth century and the present. Kai Merten is professor of British Literature at the University of Erfurt, Germany. His research focuses on contemporary poetry in English, Romantic culture in Britain as well as on questions of mediality in British literature and Postcolonial Studies. He is also the founder of the Erfurt Network on New Materialism. -

G. Sebald, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ian McEwan Elizabeth Andrews McArthur This dissertation analyzes how twentieth- and early twenty-first- century novelists respond to the English landscape through their presentation of narrative and their experiments with novelistic form. Opening with a discussion of the English planning movement, “Narrative Topography” reveals how shifting perceptions of the structure of English space affect the content and form of the contemporary novel. The first chapter investigates literary responses to the English landscape between the World Wars, a period characterized by rapid suburban growth. It reveals how Virginia Woolf, in Mrs. Dalloway and Between the Acts, reconsiders which narrative choices might be appropriate for mobilizing and critiquing arguments about the relationship between city, country, and suburb. The following chapters focus on responses to the English landscape during the present era. The second chapter argues that W. G. Sebald, in The Rings of Saturn, constructs rural Norfolk and Suffolk as containing landscapes of horror—spaces riddled with sinkholes that lead his narrator to think about near and distant acts of violence. As Sebald intimates that this forms a porous “landscape” in its own right, he draws attention to the fallibility of representation and the erosion of cultural memory. -

It means revisiting their work, certainly, but also, more carefully, studying how the impress of their authorship evolves over time, and what core elements remain that make them recognizably themselves. Of those authors writing today, Kazuo Ishiguro lends himself exceptionally well to rereading in part because his oeuvre, especially his novels, are so coherent. Featuring first-person narrators reflecting on the remains of their day, these protagonists struggle to come to terms with their participation in structures of harm, and do so with a formal complexity and tonal distance that suggests unreli- ability or a vexed relationship to their own place in the order of things. Ishiguro is also an impeccable re-reader, as the intertextuality of his prose suggests. He convincingly inhabits, as well as cleverly rewrites, existing genres such as the country house novel, the novel of manners, the English boarding school novel, the mystery novel, the bildung- sroman, science fiction, and, most recently, Arthurian fantasy. Artist, detective, pianist, clone: to read Ishiguro always entails rereading in relation to his own oeuvre, as well as to the literary canon. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

[email protected] TEMPORAL EXPERIENCES IN THE SELECT NOVELS OF IAN McEWAN Abstract This paper exerts to analyze Ian’s concept of temporal experiences in this postmodern world. Ian’s novels stands out for its highlight on temporality and the tacit exigency to tackle one’s moral identity. McEwan designs his novels as a fictitious narrative based on various themes, using them in hookup with his plots, characters and symbols, to add emphasis to the concepts and the ideas that shape his stories. His themes range from universal to the complex. The overriding temporal frame of his novels are uncanny. Key Words: Temporal, Mundanity, Sacrosanct, Servitude, Ethical Vision. “Temporal and spiritual things are inseparably connected, and even will be.” - Joseph Smith In the light of temporality the author appears to juxtapose the time of mundanity for the characters and a time that is sacrosanct and servitude, thus stressing an ethical vision, IJELLH Volume 6, Issue 12, December 2018 74 possibly beyond what the self – centered British society in this postmodern world can foresee. All the underlying attention to temporal expressions and the prominent zerohour of life only reinforces the author’s call for moral inquiries and search for accountable, ethical stances in an era of transition and deterioration. McEwan continues to explore the impact on ordinary people of unusual or extreme situations, as they face sudden shocking violence or slip into acute psychological states. The Cement Garden is a clear metaphor of dysfunctional mourning of the characters Jack and his siblings. -

The winners of the 2014 and 2015 Man Booker Prize, Richard Flanagan with The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Marlon James with A Brief History of Seven Killings respectively, and the 2014 and 2015 Folio Prize winners, George Saunders with Tenth of December and Akhil Sharma with Family Life, are analysed and compared to each other. Furthermore, Ali Smith’s novel How to Be Both was shortlisted for both the Booker and the Folio Prize and thus offers a glimpse of how a novel can be considered both popular and literary. Anticipation Mounts As Oldest Book Awards Approach Milestone 04-12-2018
News Release Issued: Tuesday, 4 December 2018 Anticipation mounts as oldest book awards approach milestone More than 500 new books have arrived at the University of Edinburgh for judging in the centenary awards of Britain’s longest-running literary prizes. The annual James Tait Black Prizes – presented by the University since 1919 – have recognised many landmark works and continue to encourage great new writing. Postgraduate students June Laurenson and Vivek Santayana launched the judging process and distributed books to 25 student readers who will assess each entry. The James Tait Black Prizes are distinctive in the way that they are judged. Each year the books are considered by senior staff from English Literature at the University, assisted by a reading panel of postgraduate students Two £10,000 prizes are awarded by the University of Edinburgh for books published in English during the previous year – one for the best work of fiction and the other for the best biography. A shortlist of eight books – four in each category – will be announced in the Spring. The winners – announced in August – will join the illustrious roll call of past winners that includes Angela Carter, Graham Greene, DH Lawrence, Cormac McCarthy, Ian McEwan, Muriel Spark and Evelyn Waugh. Equally distinguished names appear on the list of biography winners. Among them are Peter Ackroyd, Martin Amis, Quentin Bell, John Buchan, Richard Ellmann, Kathryn Hughes and Hermione Lee. The James Tait Black Prizes were founded by Janet Coats, the widow of publisher James Tait Black, to commemorate her husband’s love of good books. The inaugural fiction winner was Hugh Walpole for The Secret City, his seminal work about the Russian Revolution. -

2016 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PAG. 123–135 PHILOLOGICA 1 / PRAGUE STUDIES IN ENGLISH METAFICTIONALITY, INTERTEXTUALITY, DISCURSIVITY: IAN MCEWAN ’ S POST-MILLENNIAL NOVELS ZDENĚK BERAN ABSTRACT In his twenty-first-century novels, Atonement, Saturday, Solar and Sweet Tooth, Ian McEwan makes ample use of narrative strategies characteris- tic of postmodernist writing, such as metafictionality, intertextuality and discursive multiplicity. This article discusses how this focus distinguish- es his recent novels from earlier ones. Thus Sweet Tooth is read as a text which includes the author ’ s attempt to revise his own shorter texts from the onset of his career in the mid-1970s. The use of parallelisms and alle- gory in McEwan ’ s 1980s novels The Child in Time and The Innocent is then contrasted with more complex strategies in Saturday and Solar. Special attention is given to the thematization of the role of discourse in Solar; it is argued that the novel is not just a satire on modern science and its corrup- tion by commercialization but also a reflection of “ontological relativism” as a product of prevailing contemporary discourse formations.
