Merten Kai / What Literature Knows This volume sheds light on the nexus between knowledge and literature. Arranged What Literature Knows historically, contributions address both popular and canonical English and Antje Kley US-American writing from the early modern period to the present. They focus on how historically specific texts engage with epistemological questions in relation to Forays into Literary Knowledge Production material and social forms as well as representation. The authors discuss literature as a culturally embedded form of knowledge production in its own right, which deploys narrative and poetic means of exploration to establish an independent and sometimes dissident archive. The worlds that imaginary texts project are shown to open up alternative perspectives to be reckoned with in the academic articulation and public discussion of issues in economics and the sciences, identity formation and wellbeing, legal rationale and political decision-making. What Literature Knows The Editors Antje Kley is professor of American Literary Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. Her research interests focus on aesthetic forms and cultural functions of narrative, both autobiographical and fictional, in changing media environments between the eighteenth century and the present. Kai Merten is professor of British Literature at the University of Erfurt, Germany. His research focuses on contemporary poetry in English, Romantic culture in Britain as well as on questions of mediality in British literature and Postcolonial Studies. He is also the founder of the Erfurt Network on New Materialism. -

G. Sebald, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ian McEwan Elizabeth Andrews McArthur This dissertation analyzes how twentieth- and early twenty-first- century novelists respond to the English landscape through their presentation of narrative and their experiments with novelistic form. Opening with a discussion of the English planning movement, “Narrative Topography” reveals how shifting perceptions of the structure of English space affect the content and form of the contemporary novel. The first chapter investigates literary responses to the English landscape between the World Wars, a period characterized by rapid suburban growth. It reveals how Virginia Woolf, in Mrs. Dalloway and Between the Acts, reconsiders which narrative choices might be appropriate for mobilizing and critiquing arguments about the relationship between city, country, and suburb. The following chapters focus on responses to the English landscape during the present era. The second chapter argues that W. G. Sebald, in The Rings of Saturn, constructs rural Norfolk and Suffolk as containing landscapes of horror—spaces riddled with sinkholes that lead his narrator to think about near and distant acts of violence. As Sebald intimates that this forms a porous “landscape” in its own right, he draws attention to the fallibility of representation and the erosion of cultural memory. -

It means revisiting their work, certainly, but also, more carefully, studying how the impress of their authorship evolves over time, and what core elements remain that make them recognizably themselves. Of those authors writing today, Kazuo Ishiguro lends himself exceptionally well to rereading in part because his oeuvre, especially his novels, are so coherent. Featuring first-person narrators reflecting on the remains of their day, these protagonists struggle to come to terms with their participation in structures of harm, and do so with a formal complexity and tonal distance that suggests unreli- ability or a vexed relationship to their own place in the order of things. Ishiguro is also an impeccable re-reader, as the intertextuality of his prose suggests. He convincingly inhabits, as well as cleverly rewrites, existing genres such as the country house novel, the novel of manners, the English boarding school novel, the mystery novel, the bildung- sroman, science fiction, and, most recently, Arthurian fantasy. Artist, detective, pianist, clone: to read Ishiguro always entails rereading in relation to his own oeuvre, as well as to the literary canon. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

Prof. Raad Kareem Abd-Aun, PhD Dijla Gattan Shannan (M.A. Student) Abstract The term intertextuality is coined by poststructuralist Julia Kristeva, in her essay “Word, Dialogue and Novel” (1969). The underlying principle of intertextuality is relationality and lack of independence. In this paper, this technique (intertextuality) will be discussed in Ian McEwan's selected novels. The novels are Enduring Love (1997), Atonement (2001), and Sweet Tooth (2012). This makes his novels have a significant form of cultural expression McEwan’s early works are characterized by self – ambiguity in which he is tackling important social themes within the fictional scenario. His early narrative is described as “snide and bored”, or as “acutely dysfunctional or the abusive”, at other times as “inexplicaply lawless”. -

Ilowever, Mr Amis’s long string of accomplished novels is only one sick., if the most important part, of his literary achievement. There is his poetry. There is his criticism. Now here are his political reconimendations. These are, to he sure, First published 1979 recoinmendations for a policy towards the arts. But, by Centre for Policy Studies nevertheless, they are political if only because they deal firmly 8 \Vilfretl Street and squarely with the argument that the arts should be London SW 1 “politicised”. A horrible word, it is true, but an appropriate Prinbd by S S IV Ltd one for a rotten idea. Mr Amis, too, shows that he could he an 39/21 Great Portland Street inspiring politician. What is his policy? A heavy investment in London Wl poets? Subsidy for exporting novelists? Tax-free dachas for 0 I<ingsley Amis needy critics? But Rfr Amis’s plan is for us to have no arts policy. This is a very skilful plan though he would he the first to agree that it is a difficult one to introduce and carry through in a nation much used to busy bodies. At the end of his pamphlet -aversion of a speech delivered at the Centre’s fringe meeting at the 1979 Conservative Conference at Blackpool - Mr Amis alloivs his Publication by tile Centre for Policy Studies does not imply acceptance of attention to wander -orat least so I believe - and suggests aiitlion’conciosioas or prescriptions. -

Eger Journal of English Studies XX (2020) 65–76 65 Postmodern Children and THE CEMENT GARDEN of Ian McEwan Réka Vajda [email protected] Postmodern childhood narratives often explore disturbing themes, break social conventions and taboos. In order to comment on this kind of representation, this study will introduce Ian McEwan’s controversial novel The Cement Garden (1978), the story of four children who, in the middle of a particularly hot summer, find themselves orphaned. The novel narrated by fourteen-year-old Jack explores such themes as sexuality, incest, death, the struggles of coming of age, isolation, gender roles and parent-child relationships. Keywords: child, childhood, postmodern, Ian McEwan. 1 Introduction The twentieth century or the “century of the child,” as called by James and Prout (1997, 1), witnessed a great increase in the attention paid to childhood and children. Psychologist James Sully, the author of Studies of Childhood, wrote at the very end of the nineteenth century: “With the growth of a poetic or sentimental interest in childhood there has come a new and different kind of interest. Ours is a scientific age, and science has cast its inquisitive eye on the infant […] we now speak of the beginning of a careful and methodical investigation of child nature.” (1993, 4) He was right. By the 1970s psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists have offered extensive accounts on various aspects of childhood and the child. In 1960 French historian Philip Ariés published his controversial book Centuries of Childhood, in which he questioned some of the existing assumptions about the nature of childhood. -

Click here to print 31/10/07 Femail section Kingsley Amis was a drunk who hated me, but he was no racist, says his second wife by CORINNA HONAN Even now, 27 years after she crept out of the house with just two suitcases, Elizabeth Jane Howard tortures herself with regrets about the end of her marriage. Should she have stayed? Could she have made a difference to Kingsley Amis's final years, when he was drinking a whole bottle of Macallan single malt by midmorning before progressing to tequila, gin and Campari? What made it worse was that the novelist never forgave her. Meeting Jane as she is known and leaving his first wife, Hilly, was the most disastrous thing that had ever happened to him, he said later. And he twisted the knife with a series of bitter, misogynous novels (which Jane has never read) while successfully convincing himself that he had never really loved her at all. For Jane, the pain of this denouement was utterly crushing. She never responded to Kingsley's public attacks and saw him only twice in the 15 years before his death. "Once, we happened to turn up at the same party," she recalls. "He hunched his shoulders and said: 'My wife has come I'm leaving.' The second time I saw him by chance was in a restaurant. He deliberately turned his back on me and I felt my knees giving way." By the time he was clearly on his death bed, purplefaced and clinically obese, he was a grotesque parody of the goodlooking author of Lucky Jim who had seduced the most stunning woman novelist of her generation.
