In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Joesell Radford, BA Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Professor Beverly Gordon, Advisor Professor Adrienne Dixson Copyrighted by Crystal Joesell Radford 2011 Abstract This study critically analyzes rap through an interdisciplinary framework. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998). -

This should not be ordered routinely but only when the infant needs it. These orders are good for only 24h. OXYGEN DELIVERY and MEASUREMENT: A. Oxygen blenders allow O2 concentration to be adjusted between 21% and 100%. B. Head Hoods permit non-intubated infants to breathe high concentrations of humidified oxygen. Without a silencer they can be very noisy. C. Nasal Cannulae allow non-intubated infants to breathe high O2 concentrations and to be less encumbered than with a head hood. O2 flows of 0.25-0.5 L/min are usually sufficient to meet oxygen needs. -

I thought it could have been easy to talk about one of the most influential records of the whole music history. It turned out that this loose, A5 –sized, home printed book- let is the only existing monographic work on Notorius B.I.G.’s Ready To Die. By stating this at the beginning of the sup- posed dissertation, I want to make sure that the reader could read these lines as the raw output of a deep, although instinc- tive, research on one of the milestones of hip-hop cultural history. The research pro- cess, of which this booklet testifies the ma- terial result, has been spontaneous, in the sense that did not started as a canonical research question, but instead it happened a posteriori, being the record a very famil- iar matter for me since ages. As you will see, the lyrics of the songs contained within Ready To Die are formal- ly printed –without any additional editing– from RapGenius, a world famous website collecting lyrics and anecdotes of hip-hop songs from users. The oral history com- ponent of this platform is an essential el- ement shared with early hip-hop culture, in which realities existed and formalised themselves only via word of mouth or so- cio-cultural affinity with the hip-hop phe- nomenon. -

360° DEALS: AN INDUSTRY REACTION TO THE DEVALUATION OF RECORDED MUSIC SARA KARUBIAN* I. INTRODUCTION In October of 2007, Radiohead released In Rainbows without a record label. The band’s contract with record company EMI had been fulfilled in 2003, and Radiohead did not bother finding a new deal as they began recording their seventh album.1 Radiohead then made the album available at www.inrainbows.com, where fans were instructed to “pay-what-you- want” for the digital download.2 Shortly after the album’s release, the band’s front man, Thom Yorke, said “I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say ‘F___ you’ to this decaying business model.”3 It was no surprise that Radiohead received critical acclaim for the artistic merits of the album,4 or that millions of fans found a way to acquire the music. Its financial success, however, was less predictable. Radiohead declined to release statistics related to its pay-what-you-want model, but a conservative estimate suggests that the band’s profits from this digital release exceeded six and a half million.5 Furthermore, when Radiohead contracted with iTunes and a distributor to sell the album on iTunes and in stores, its high sales pushed it to the top of traditional album charts6 in early * J.D.
