Whyte 2017 2 ABSTRACT This is a study of settlement and society in the parish of Torosay on the Inner Hebridean island of Mull, through the earliest known settlement-names of two of its medieval districts: Forsa and Moloros.1 The earliest settlement-names, 35 in total, were coined in two languages: Gaelic and Old Norse (hereafter abbreviated to ON) (see Abbreviations, below). -

ISBN 0 85323 959 2 This major two-volume work contains a translation of the section of the Irish chronicles covering the period A.D. 431-911, when a text known to modern scholarship as the ‘Chronicle of Ireland’ forms the basis for most of the annalistic material relating to Ireland and Scotland. Thomas Charles-Edwards’s stated aim of the translation is ‘to present the evidence for the Chronicle of Ireland’ (Vol. 1, p. 1) and ‘to make early Irish history more accessible’ (Vol. 1, p. xiv). These words are equally applicable to Scottish history, since the Irish annals also form the main basis for constructing the history of the Picts, Gaels and Britons of northern Britain for most of this period. While editions and translations of the Irish chronicles do exist, they vary considerably in quality, and often lack the introductory matter or notes which would help scholars to use these texts in a sophisticated manner. -

I dedicate all my triumphs to you 4 5 Introduction The topic of the thesis is the Irish myth Cath Maige Tuired - "The Second Battle of Mag Tuired", which is the story about the battle between the Túatha Dé Danann, the gods of pagan Ireland, and their enemies the Fomoire. What I wish to focus upon in the Cath Maige Tuired is not the battle in itself, which has been compared to the war between the Aesir and the Vanir in Scandinavian mythology1, but a passage at the end of this myth, where the goddess Mórrigan (here in the form of a mortal) comes with a prediction of the end of the world. -

Published in Ériu 57 (2007), 133–53 SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE ‘DUBLIN ANNALS OF INISFALLEN’* MEIDHBHÍN NÍ ÚRDAIL University College Dublin ABSTRACT This article examines the compilation and transcription of the eighteenth-century source commonly known as the ‘Dublin Annals of Inisfallen’. It reviews, in particular, the work’s most substantial entries, i.e. those which concern the O’Briens and the history of Thomond in the medieval period, and briefly highlights the historical value of other longer entries relating to the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The ‘Dublin Annals’ attests to the readiness with which scribes indulged in editorial intrusion, while it also offers insights into the factors which impinged upon textual transmission in the Modern Irish period. INTRODUCTION I argued some years ago for the importance of a shifting in focus in the area of post- classical Modern Irish manuscript studies from the material transcribed to the scribe who produced it. -

Hunting for the genetic legacy of Brian Boru in Irish historical sources. Catherine Swift, Mary Immaculate College Having won an English chariot from an Italian gentleman at play, my uncle had our arms painted on the panels in a more splendid way than ever (surmounted, as we were descended from the ancient kings) with an Irish crown of the most splendid size and gilding. I had this crown in lieu of a coronet engraved on a large amethyst signet-ring worn on my forefinger; and I don’t mind confessing that I used to say the jewel had been in my family for several thousand years, having originally belonged to my direct ancestor, his late Majesty, King Brian Boru or Barry. I warrant the legends of the Heralds’ College are not more authentic than mine was.1 In his travels in Ireland in 1842, Thackeray followed the course of the Shannon up river from Tarbert to Limerick and then travelled through Clare to Galway, visiting “a decent little library” in Ennis where he bought “six volumes of works strictly Irish”. As he describes them subsequently, “these yellow-covered books are prepared for the people chiefly” and included tales of a highwayman entitled Adventures of Mr James Freeny, legends in Hibernian Tales2 and “the lamentable tragedy of the ‘Battle of Aughrim’ writ in the most doleful Anglo-Irish verse.” He does not refer explicitly in his Irish Sketchbook to Brian Boru but it seems fair to assume that his description of Barry Lyndon’s ancestry was based, at least in part, on stories he had heard when travelling through Thomond or, perhaps, even elsewhere in Ireland. -

Hudson From Senchus to histore: Traditions of King Duncan I The kings of Scotland prior to the reign of Malcolm III, popularly known as Malcolm Carunore (Malcolm "Bighead") have rarely been con sidered in connection with Scottish historical literature. Macbeth, largely due to Shakespeare's drama, has been the exception. For the medieval period alone, Nora Chadwick's examination of the Macbeth legend showed that a number of literary traditions, both native and foreign, can be detected in later medieval literature. 1 Macbeth was not alone in hav ing a variety of legends cluster about his memory; his historical and liter ary contemporary Duncan earned his share of legends too. Annals, Histories, Genealogies & Tales P. W. Joyce 1903 SECTION I. How the Annals were compiled. AMONG the various classes of persons who devoted themselves to Literature in ancient Ireland, there were special Annalists, who made it their business to record, with the utmost accuracy, all remarkable events simply and briefly, without any ornament of language, without exaggeration, and without fictitious embellishment. The extreme care they took that their statements should be truthful is shown by the manner in which they compiled their books. As a general rule they admitted nothing into their records except either what occurred during their lifetime, and which may be said to have come under their own personal knowledge, or what they found recorded in the compilations of previous annalists, who had themselves followed the same plan. These men took nothing on hearsay : and in this manner successive Annalists carried on a continued chronicle from age to age, thus giving the whole series the force of contemporary testimony [1] We have still preserved to us many books of native Annals, the most important of which will be briefly described in this chapter. Most of the ancient manuscripts whose entries are copied into the books of Annals we now possess have been lost ; but that the entries were so copied is rendered quite certain by various expressions found in the present existing Annals, as well as by the known history of several of the compilations. Introduction Medieval Ireland is known for a great number of kings - in fact there were probably no less than 150 kings in the country at any given date between the fifth and twelfth century1 . Since the total population was probably well under half a million, this multiplicity of royalty is all the more remarkable. Of course, all of them were of different types. There were in general: rí tuaithe – the king of single tuath or tribe, rí tuath or rui ri (great king) was the king of several tribes, but commonly he was called according to the name of territory or the name of ruling dynasty branch (for example, rí Iarluachra, which means the king of the territories to the west of Luachra mountains); rí coicid (king of fifth, i.e. of one of the provinces into which Ireland was traditionally divided) or ard-ri of province (ard-ri Ulad, ard-ri Connacht, ard-ri Laigen), and, at once, ard-ri or ríg Érenn – high-king of Ireland2. In spite of the concept of the high-kingship in Ireland, there is no evidence about centralized monarchy before the king Brian Boru from the Munster’s dynasty Dál Cais. Irish provinces and their kings were independent from each other and were mostly connected with the dynastic relations. From the beginning of early Middle Age till the Norman invasion there were two powerful ruling dynasties in Ireland: Uí Néill in the central and north part and Eóganachta dynasty (after them Dál Cais), in the south, in Munster. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Aberdeen University Research Archive INR 69[1] EVANS: Page 1 of 57 Nicholas Evans Irish chronicles as sources for the history of northern Britain, A.D. 660– 8001 The Irish chronicles, along with sources from England, especially the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede’s ‘Ecclesiastical History of the English People’, provide the chronological framework that underpins the narrative history of northern Britain in the seventh and eighth centuries.2 Other texts help to illuminate various aspects of the period’s societies, but their limitations in chronological and geographical coverage, and subject-matter, as well as difficulties in determining their early contents, mean that historical texts with chronologies form the basis for reconstructing the narrative skeleton of this period.
