I dedicate all my triumphs to you 4 5 Introduction The topic of the thesis is the Irish myth Cath Maige Tuired - "The Second Battle of Mag Tuired", which is the story about the battle between the Túatha Dé Danann, the gods of pagan Ireland, and their enemies the Fomoire. What I wish to focus upon in the Cath Maige Tuired is not the battle in itself, which has been compared to the war between the Aesir and the Vanir in Scandinavian mythology1, but a passage at the end of this myth, where the goddess Mórrigan (here in the form of a mortal) comes with a prediction of the end of the world. -

Hudson From Senchus to histore: Traditions of King Duncan I The kings of Scotland prior to the reign of Malcolm III, popularly known as Malcolm Carunore (Malcolm "Bighead") have rarely been con sidered in connection with Scottish historical literature. Macbeth, largely due to Shakespeare's drama, has been the exception. For the medieval period alone, Nora Chadwick's examination of the Macbeth legend showed that a number of literary traditions, both native and foreign, can be detected in later medieval literature. 1 Macbeth was not alone in hav ing a variety of legends cluster about his memory; his historical and liter ary contemporary Duncan earned his share of legends too. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Aberdeen University Research Archive INR 69[1] EVANS: Page 1 of 57 Nicholas Evans Irish chronicles as sources for the history of northern Britain, A.D. 660– 8001 The Irish chronicles, along with sources from England, especially the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede’s ‘Ecclesiastical History of the English People’, provide the chronological framework that underpins the narrative history of northern Britain in the seventh and eighth centuries.2 Other texts help to illuminate various aspects of the period’s societies, but their limitations in chronological and geographical coverage, and subject-matter, as well as difficulties in determining their early contents, mean that historical texts with chronologies form the basis for reconstructing the narrative skeleton of this period. He was arguably the most successful Irish king of the Middle Ages, and his sobriquet “bórumha” (“cattle tribute”), usually Anglicized as “Boru,” refers to his right to the reign over the island. Special emphasis is placed on the development of his military strategy as he progressed from regional prince to lordship over the entire island. Brian’s career has not received the scholarly attention given to his contemporaries elsewhere. His reign is either dealt with superficially in brief essays or treated more fully by writers interested in sensationalism. A careful study of Brian’s strategy and operational method reveals that they continuously evolved during the course of his reign. -

It is argued that the workshop that created it and related material was located at Clonmacnoise and that abbot Tigernach Ua Bráein (d.1088) may have been its commissioner. While there is no basis to the story that it was found, along with another crosier, in Temple Ciarán its iconography nevertheless suggests a link with that building and more generally with Clonmacnoise. -

As chapter one illustrates, through a review of the historiography of Irish kingship, the discussion of ‘power’ has, hitherto, amounted to a conversation about the ways in which the power of the greater Irish kings grew over the course of the eleventh and twelfth centuries (at the expense of the lesser kings). Engaging with the rich corpus of international literature on power, as is done in chapter one, reveals the sheer complexity and vicissitudes of ‘power’ as a concept. Many writers and thinkers on the subject have identified resistance as a means through which to view power relations, and it is along these lines that the rest of the thesis runs. Chapters three and four are concerned with the subject of resistance; with regicide and revolt, respectively. Both mine the Irish annals. -

1 Celestial portents and apocalypticism in medieval Ireland The Irish annals show that between the seventh and the twelfth centuries, Irish ecclesiastical scholars in various monastic centres were recording atmospheric and celestial phenomena as part of their wider noting-down of the significant events of each year: changes of rulership, famines, important battles, attacks on churches and monastic centres (Viking or otherwise), and the deaths of signifi- cant churchmen and of secular dynasts. These observations were often both astronomically accurate and perceptive.1 The purpose of this first chapter is to examine this material, and to assess how the ways of considering such ‘signs’ changed over the centuries and influenced literary texts. As I noted in the Preface, Daniel McCarthy and Aidan Breen have studied the celestial phenomena noted in the annals, and concluded by scientific means that they largely reflect actual astronomical and meteorological events.2 They argue that the impulse to make such observations derived from the fervid apocalyptic anxieties that characterized much of early medieval Irish religious experience and expression.3 The church- men in question were thus engaged in a process of finding meaning in celestial phenomena, fusing them with what Kathleen Hughes has termed ‘the fantastic 1 The relationship of the extant annals is complex, and thus it is not possible to state with certainty where any given observation was made.
