Their baseball caps signify their special place among an elite group of pilots. www.iac.org 9 The Pitts Replicas at EAA AirVenture 2015 EVAN PEERS 10 Sport Aerobatics October 2015 A 70th anniversary celebration by Francois Bougie The Pitts Replicas at EAA/IAC AirVenture 2015 At this year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the IAC Pavilion was “Pitts-centric.” Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the biplane first flown by Curtis Pitts in 1945, an exhibit retraced its history, from the first flight of the original Pitts Special, NX52650, up to the current Pitts super biplane deriva- tive, as flown by Sean Tucker and Skip Stewart.Dated August 28, 1945, the first Pitts flight entry in Curtis’ logbook indicates that the flight lasted 20 minutes. In the re- marks column he inscribed, “Test Hop (What a Day).” This first flight would eventu- ally change the aerobatic land- scape in the United States and spread worldwide. The only way one can really un- derstand Curtis’ first logbook en- try is to build a replica of a Pitts from that era. During the convention, dis- played outside the IAC Pavilion were replicas of Pitts No. 1 and Pitts No. 3. Inside was housed the replica of Pitts No. 2, appropriately described by IAC President Mike Heuer as “the crown jewel of our Pitts exhibition.” Pitts replica No. 3, N8M, rep- resents the aircraft flown by Caro Bayley in 1951. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard Thurman I overheard a member at our last chapter meeting state how he thought flying aerobatics was one of the most selfish things a person could possibly participate in. I’ve heard other variations of this particular sentiment: aerobatic pilots are self-centered, self- absorbed, are in it all for themselves, do not give back, blah, blah, blah. (continued) 1 A Radical Notion Nobody is born to be the keeper of YOU. Everyone is in this life for themselves. And this is not a bad thing. Everyone has a source within them that is guiding them to their best interest. Everyone has a personal GPS and is being called toward an improved life experience.     October 2009 20 Issue 10 September Meeting Notes Hey everybody. Inside this issue: George started off the meeting with a report on the CP event. There were not Meeting Minutes many spectators (the weather was bad that day), but there were 30 registered pilots, so that was good. The demos were excellent and so was the BBQ. The bottom line Lunch Hour was a $5862 donation for United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado. This included some cor- Pitts Special porate sponsors (Jeppesen $2k, Aeroworks $1.5k, the catering company $800, Dex, etc.) There were 25 MAS members who volunteered at the event. Thanks to all of you. Without you, the event would have a been a failure. In addition to your time, the club donated the fees for the extra Porta-potty and also all the work for getting the field looking great. On September 19th, MAS was hosted by Aeroworks at their Aurora headquar- ters. Aeroworks gave members a tour of the facility and showed them what planes are being developed. Our esteemed leader Hank won himself an electric plane in a draw- ing. Just to let all Adams County voters know, one of our members, Mark Nicastle, will be running for Sheriff in the 2010 election. Not to sway any votes, but Mark's a good guy and has done a lot for the club over the years. The October meeting is when we elect officers for 2010. We need volun- teers! (show up and vote/volunteer now is your chance to change things you don't like) Upcoming meetings and events Hank and Ron will not be staying on as President and VP, so we need some Meeting Oct 22 new people for the jobs.

    Betty Skelton June 28, 1926 - Present Nationality: American Set Records Between 1954-1970 Origins: A 1935 trip to Alabama started Betty Skelton’s love affair with flying. While visiting relatives, Betty was allowed to ride in a small plane owned by a local man and was determined to become a pilot herself. After returning to their home in Florida, the entire Skelton family, Betty and her parents David and Myrtle, enrolled in flying lessons. At the age of 12, Betty soloed her first aircraft, although she now admits this might have been performed “illegally,”1 as she was too young to legally fly alone. She “officially” soloed in 1942, at the age of 16, and earned her pilot’s license. and two years later, she started competing in aerobatics. Early Influences: Skelton quickly made a name for herself in aerobatics, claiming international championships in 1948, 1949, and 1950, as well as setting numerous air speed and altitude records. Skelton’s automotive career didn’t begin until she retired from aviation in 1951, looking for another challenge. In 1953 she was introduced to Bill France, Sr., the head of NASCAR and he asked if Skelton would be interested in challenging land speed records and possibly competing in auto racing. Weeks later, Skelton competed in her first Daytona Speed Week, setting a class record of 105.88 mph behind the wheel of a1954 Dodge Red Ram sedan. Racing Accomplishments: • First woman to drive an Indy 500 race car when she drove Jack McGrath’s #2 Indy roadster around the Chelsea, Michigan, Chrysler test track in 1954.
