    “REQUIEM AETERNAM DONA EIS DOMINE” 2014 OBITUARIES OBITUARIES Philip German-Ribon (30) Philip German- Ribon died on the 16th September aged 101 and at the time of his passing was our oldest OB. He was the youngest of three brothers who came to Beaumont the sons of Roberto. His Grandfather had been the Bolivian Ambassador in London and Paris and he was born in 1912 at their residence in the Cromwell road. Later he moved to Paris and enjoyed holidays at their house in Biarritz. The family were of Spanish origin and there is still a street in Seville named after them but they then moved to Columbia in the 18th century and took part in the liberation of South America with Simon Bolivar; one of Philip’s ancestors was shot by the Spanish as a traitor. In Bolivia they had large mining interests and were involved politically in the administration of the country. Philip though spent most of his childhood in England and his parents had a home near Tunbridge Wells and his father worked in London involved with specialist metals such as bismuth and tin which brought them into involvement with the Wolffs and the London Metal Market. Philip and his brothers were sent to Wagners in Queens Gate where Philip made a strong friendship with John de Laszlo, the son of Philip the society artist. It was during this period that as a young boy Philip visited 11 Downing Street where de Laszlo was painting Sir Austen Chamberlain who also happened also to be a friend of Philip’s parents.

Patch Abstract The aim of this thesis is to analyse the function of colour in film through three films by British director Nicolas Roeg. To this end, this thesis has the following three correspondent aims: first to consider the theoretical relationship between colour and film within film studies as a discipline. Second, to propose a means of discussing film colour outside the dominant approach of restoration and degradation. Third to explore how Roeg’s implements colour within three of his films Performance, Don’t Look Now, and finally Bad Timing, and the ideological and aesthetic questions that emerge through a consideration of colour in these works. By looking at colour and Nicolas Roeg this thesis will not only present a critical response to the research question but it will also fill a small gap in the current dearth of work that exists on both colour and British cinema in the 1970s.     Beggars Banquet When is an album born? Is it when the first lyrics are written? The first notes played? The first track is laid down? Or is it later, when the accumulated efforts of the artists begin to look like something that needs a name? Or does it take an album cover sleeve? Something from which we remove and return the album, with a strong visual connection? The Stones entered Olympic Studios in London on March 17, 1968 to begin a roughly two-week session during which they would begin recording songs that would appear on Beggars Banquet. The album remained unnamed for 111 days. It would not be released until December 6, 1968 153 days after it was publicly named. Every good Stones fan knows the story of the “graffiti” cover for Beggars Banquet, fewer know that was not the first choice for the album cover. This is the story of how Beggars Banquet came to look like an invitation that was embarrassingly close to the Beatles White Album. The Rolling Stones needed a win, “Cause you see I’m on a losing streak.” Andrew Loog Oldham was gone, Keith who stole Brian’s girl may have had her borrowed by Mick who was filming love scenes with her in Performance as Keith penned Gimme Shelter. The drug busts had slowed but their aftermath churned on, Brian was on his way out and the rock and roll lifestyles went on. After the psychedelic debacle of Their Satanic Majesties Request the new album was a make or break endeavor. Mick had hoped to have the album come out on June 26, his 25th birthday.

    We are very pleased to welcome you to our cornucopic Cabinet of Curiosities . In his comprehensive Company History of Sotheran's, Bookmen London. 250 Years of Sotheran Bookselling , Victor Gray describes the early years of the business as follows. "The other strand in their ‘launch campaign’ was an elegant handbill, engraved for them by a neighbour in Stonegate, Robert Ledger, who combined the trades of silk mercer and engraver. Within an elegant baroque cartouche, it advertised the advent of ‘Todd and Sootheran (Successors to Mr John Hinxman) Booksellers and Stationers, at the Bible, in Stonegate, York’. Beneath, between fluted columns wreathed in flowers, was a highly detailed, nothing-left-out account of what the firm could and would be offering the citizens of York. This included, beyond the simple sale of books and periodicals, maps, globes and mathematical instruments, prints, framed or unframed, writing, drawing and packing papers, slates, pencils, quills, pens, ink and ink-stands and all manner of writing equipment, the loan of books by subscription, and a range of medicines. Here was a catch-all advertisement describing the fullest range of what a provincial bookseller in the 18th century might dabble in to turn a penny." Victor goes on to note that by 1786 a new advertisement appeared carrying a reminder that "Of the above H. Sotheran may be had all kinds of spirituous liquors of the very best quality". While, due to some unfathomable oversight, we no longer carry an alcohol licence we hope that in this catalogue we may show that the range and diversity of the merchandise offered by the Company has not diminished over the last 256 years of continuous trading.
