  • The Use of the Bow No
Sermon #1694 Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit 1 THE USE OF THE BOW NO. 1694 DELIVERED AT THE THURSDAY EVENING LECTURE, BY C. H. SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. “And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher).” 2 Samuel 1:17, 18. THE translators have acted very properly in inserting the words, “the use of,” for that is what the passage means. But if you read it without those words, the sense is still the same— “He bade them teach the chil- dren of Judah the bow,” that is to say, how to use the bow. In modern times, critics have said that by the expression, “the bow,” is meant the song which David composed. And to sustain their notion, they quote from the Koran of Mahomet in which they tell us that there is a certain chapter called, “the Bow,” and, therefore, David called his song, “the bow,” as if so late an instance of oriental usage was at all to the point. I declare that there is nothing whatever in Scripture to justify the state- ment that the words, “the bow,” can be applied to David’s lament! No doubt, some of the Psalms have titles given to them, but there is never an instance of a Psalm being quoted by its title. It is quoted by its number, never by its name. I accept the passage as our learned transla- tors understood it—David bade them teach the children of Judah the bow.

The BBC leads the way with 46 nominations across its channels, with BBC One and HBO’s hit shows, His Dark Materials receiving four and I May Destroy You garnering three nominations respectively. Sky follows the BBC with 10 nominations with Gangs of London, Brassic and Catherine the Great all shortlisted. The prestigious awards will be celebrated on Monday 23rd November on the RTS website with special guest appearances. The RTS Craft & Design Awards celebrate excellence in broadcast television and aim to recognise the huge variety of skills and processes involved in programme production across 31 competitive categories ranging from Make Up Design: Drama to Director: Multicamera, alongside the RTS Special Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award which are both given at the discretion of the RTS. Chair of the Awards, Anne Mensah, said: “The standard of television this year has been incredible and provided audiences with both comfort and escapism, as well as new and underrepresented perspectives, in what has been such a turbulent time for all of us. We are very much looking forward to celebrating the talented individuals and teams who continue to produce world class content, later this month.” The Craft & Design Awards accept entries from both individual craftspeople and broadcasters, and the juries take into consideration production difference, budget and time scale involved.

The exercises involved military forces primarily from China and Russia, though other SCO member states (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) also sent smaller units to serve as participants and observers. Peace Mission 2007 attracted tremendous interest within Central Asia and beyond, arousing Paper Occasional premature speculation that the SCO intends to use such exercises as a basis for a military bloc to compete with NATO or to minimize Western security influence in Central Asia.
