Three Rivers threeriversnews.com Commercial-News OPINION

“The Car Guy” Craig Crabill

Rules of the road: more courtesy advice It seems that I have way more words than paper most days. Here are more words to cover rude behavior on our roads. I live relatively close to town and since I work in town I used to ride my bicycle to get some exercise and save fuel. When gas was hovering near five dollars per gallon I braved the cold, rain, high wind, even the occasional icy road. But after close calls on the ol’ two wheeler (close for me, but obviously not a big deal to the monster trucks that tried to clip me), I started driving to work again. Savings on gas and getting exercise went to the wayside for a couple of years. I’m not lazy nor overly cautious, but enough close calls and near misses scared me into driving. “Road hogs” are my biggest nemesis. They’re often normally good drivers who, when dealing with bikes or motorcycles, think they have more right to the lane they occupy than the other person in that lane. NOT TRUE! Almost without exception I think most drivers are unaware that to pass safely they first must see no double yellow line. Secondly, have no oncoming traffic that would endanger them or anyone else in close proximity. Most importantly, they must go completely around (over the center line to avoid hitting) the person they are passing. They (the passer) must, under all circumstances, and no matter what type of vehicle being passed, give the person in their lane that they’re passing the FULL lane they possess. Not a few inches from the bicyclists’ handle bar, not two feet from the side of the horse and buggy, and certainly not just half a lane to just squeak by the slower moving scooter. My second reason for not riding a bike to work anymore is VIEWPOINT tailgaters — no not “Go Blue” or “Sparty” tailgaters. They’re the other road “owners” that rate themselves so highly in reaction times they think they can defy physics.
