From the Division of Tourism Director
Join the conversation! November/ December 2013 Welcome to the Missouri Film News, a monthly e-newsletter produced by the Missouri Film Office a part of the Missouri Division of Tourism. Here you’ll get the latest updates on film and digital production in Missouri and learn about creative media events happening across our state. From the Division of Tourism Director: “ I thought the script was a fair portrayal of Walt as a mogul but also as an artist and a human being.” -Saving Mr. Banks director John Lee Hancock Saving Mr. Banks in theatres now, chronicles Walt Disney’s work – and struggles – to adapt the “Mary Poppins” books for the big screen. Disney is an important figure in Missouri’s landscape of famous faces. He spent a formative part of his childhood in Marceline and later lived and worked in Kansas City. It was in Marceline, a small community in northwest Missouri, where Disney learned to draw and became fascinated with trains (some 70 trains still pass through town each day). Although he lived in Marceline for just four years, the city was etched in Disney’s memory. Marceline served as the model for Main Street USA at Disneyland, and to this day, sweet-seekers at the amusement park find their fill at a shop named Marceline’s Confectionery. Also, Disney had a significant impact on Marceline. After his rise to fame, Disney returned on several occasions and Marceline embraced its favorite son. Disney’s life is commemorated at the Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Marceline, while the city’s post office and elementary school bear his name. -

The Independent – Student – News http://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/bournemouth-graduates-celebrating-oscar- glory-for-their-work-on-gravity-9168893.html Bournemouth graduates celebrating Oscar glory for their work on 'Gravity' by JOE NERSSESSIAN on Tuesday 04 March 2014 Graduates from two Bournemouth Universities are celebrating this week after Gravity picked up seven Oscars at Sunday’s ceremony. 50 Animation and Film graduates from Bournemouth University (BU) and Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) worked on the visual effects part of the film for London-based company, Framestore. The work undertaken by the graduates was specifically recognised as the movie claimed a technical award for Visual Effects, and also won a BAFTA in the same category last month. Framestore, whose senior representatives collected the Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, are world leaders in visual effects and have an outpost on the AUB campus, where some of the work was completed. The outpost is “very important” to students' development, according to the lecturer in animation at BU, Adam Redford, who also spent six months working on the film. “It can be a great opportunity for graduates to get their first job, and first taste of proper industry experience by working there,” Adam told The Bournemouth Rock. ”I felt really proud to have been involved in a film that won so many awards, especially for the visual effects. It’s a good feeling to know that you have had some input, however small, into something that has been received so positively by the visual effects community and the general public,” said Adam. -

The spectacle of high- velocity 3D detritus raging past terror-struck, puny-looking astronauts stranded in space turned the Earth’s orbit into not only a site of horror but also a wasteland of hyperobjects,[1] with discarded electronics and satellite parts threatening everything that lies in the path of their ballistic whirl (see Figure 1). While the film made no environmental commentary on the long-term effect of space debris on communication systems or the broader ecological problem of long-lasting waste materials, it nevertheless projected a harrowing vision of technological breakdown, which found a thrilling articulation in the projectile aesthetics of stereoscopic cinema. -

Celebrity Interview: ‘Botched’ Star Dr
Celebrity Interview: ‘Botched’ Star Dr. Paul Nassif Discusses Being Single, Skincare and Spin-Off Shows Interview by Lori Bizzoco. Written by Stephanie Sacco. Dr. Paul Nassif is more than a doctor on reality TV. He’s a renowned facial plastic surgeon and skincare specialist. Though people may remember him from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, he’s even more recognizable for his E! reality series, Botched which he co-hosts with former RHOC star, Dr. Terry Dubrow. The success of Botched has even led to a few upcoming spin-off shows, Botched By Nature and Botched Post- Op. Last week, Nassif spoke to us in an exclusive celebrity interview about the upcoming spin-off shows, his new anti- aging skincare line and his very single relationship status. Reality TV Star Dr. Paul Nassif Talks ‘Botched’ Success Back when Nassif first developed the concept for Botched and pitched the show, his co-host was doubtful, calling Nassif “crazy” for wanting to put plastic surgery on TV. “Now look at us,” the former RHOBH star says. Botched is in its third season and the show has led to multiple spin-off series. One of the many reasons for the show’s success is that all the cases are legitimate, and Nassif and Dubrow are passionate about their clients. The doctors really enjoy helping their patients through their issues. Nassif says the role of a plastic surgeon is “part doctor and part therapist.” Although extreme cases are common in this line of work, the reality TV star shares that the worst is yet to come. -
