See the list. Rommel has the British in retreat on his way to the Suez Canal. All that stands in his way is Tobruk, held by a The Desert Rat out numbered force of Australian troops. Richard Burton leads these troops on daring raids against Rommel, keeping him off balance as they earn the nickname 'The Desert Rats'. The Desert Rats is an unpretentious war film that tells a good story with economy. The heroics come without drum-rolls. The most fascinating part of this film is to watch both the marvelous Robert Newton and the under-rated James Mason give Richard Burton acting lessons. Burton tends to The Desert Rat the scenery when he snarls, "Good-morning," as though he were the youngest in a large family, doing anything for attention. Newton counters Burton's unnecessary The Desert Rat with a beautifully modulated realization of-himself The Desert Rat disguise as Prof. Bartlett, Burton's old instructor. The rueful man who clearly understands his inability to stay sober, but still has enough control to see his own and everyone else's situation clearly. He is the kind, timorous, brilliant failure who, in one burst of glory, up-stages his more successful juniors. Newton delivers a truly magical performance. James Mason also delivers a balanced and multi-layered Rommel. Of course he practiced playing this brilliant German General in the better-known film, The Desert Fox. Burton comes across as pure ham in The Desert Rats, but there IS one scene he has where he is honest and effective. He explains to Bartlett that the picture of the young woman in his wallet is his wife. Otherwise, although Burton is billed The Desert Rat the star, the film belongs to Newton and Mason. See it for the pleasure of their company. Looking for some great streaming picks? Check out some of the IMDb editors' The Desert Rat movies and shows to round out your Watchlist. However, the Italian Army consisted largely of leg infantry; its artillery dated back to the First World Warit had no armoured cars and a few antitank weapons, which were effective only against light and cruiser tanks. As such, it proved to be no match for the British. On 7 February, as the tanks were unable to travel fast enough, the manoeuvre was led by an ad hoc brigade of armoured carstowed artillery and infantrywhich completed the trip in 30 hours, that cut off the Italian retreat and destroyed the Italian Tenth Army. After this, the tanks of the 7th Armoured Division, after eight months of fighting, needed a complete overhaul and the division was withdrawn to Cairo and temporarily ceased to be available as a fighting formation being replaced in the line by the 2nd Armoured Division. However, the 21st Panzer, despite being The Desert Rat weaker in armour, proved superior in its combined arms tactics, pushing the 7th Armoured back with a further 50 tanks lost mainly from the 22nd Armoured Brigade. Over troops were killed and others were wounded. By January the Eighth Army had reached Tripoli where a victory parade was held, with the 7th Armoured Division taking part.
