THE KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LI BRARY Map Collection (SC117) Introduction This is an artificial collection consisting of maps found in the Missouri Valley Special Collections. The collection includes historical, road, and geological maps, as well as travel guides. Most of the maps relate to Kansas City and Missouri, though Kansas, the rest of the United States, and other countries are represented as well. Scope and Content Note This is an artificial collection consisting of maps found in Missouri Valley Special Collections. Many of the maps were originally part of the main library's collection. Some of the maps have been removed from the books in which they were published. The majority of collection relates to Kansas City and Missouri, though Kansas, the rest of the United States, and other countries are represented as well. The collection is arranged primarily by size, and therein by coverage area and type. Barcode numbers indicate whether a map has been scanned and a digital image is available. This is an ongoing collection, and maps will be added as they are received. This series contains maps that have been left folded for preservation and storage reasons. The series includes 19th and early 20th century pocket maps and guide books for various states, territories, and cities – most of which appear to have been donated as a set. The majority of this series consists of road maps of Missouri, Jackson County, and Kansas City. Also included are maps of the State of Kansas, trails, and the United States. Series 2: River Report Maps, 1937-1978 and n.d. This series contains reports by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers concerning flood control, erosion, and changes along the Chariton, Little Chariton, Grand, Kansas, Marais Des Cygnes River, Osage, Republican, and Weldon Rivers and their tributaries. The coverage area includes Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado. Series 3: Boxed Maps, 1642-2009 and n.d. This series consists of 17 subseries of maps arranged by coverage area and type. Due to their size, maps in this series are housed in 20 x 24 in. boxes. 3-1: Kansas City, Missouri Items in this series include street maps, historical maps, zoning maps, and geological maps primarily relating to Kansas City, Missouri and dating from 1869 to 1965. Some maps include portions of Kansas immediately west of the state line. 3-2: Kansas City, Missouri - Business & Residential Districts This series contains maps of business and residential districts and areas within and adjacent to Kansas City, Missouri. The maps in this series date between 1857 and 2006. 3-3: Kansas City, Missouri - Wards & Polling Districts These maps show the wards, polling places, precincts, and voting districts of Kansas City, Missouri. Maps in this series are dated between 1918 and 1971, many of them from the 1930s and 1940s. Also included is a set of six maps created for the UMKC Kansas City History Project that illustrate the ward lines of the city from 1867 through 1886. 3-4: Kansas City, Missouri – School Districts Maps in this series depict Kansas City, Missouri school locations, district boundaries, and school district-related election and levy polling places. The dates on these maps range from 1915 to 1974. Included are maps of Penn Valley Park, Swope Park, and guides to trolley, streetcar, and bus routes. 3-6: Kansas City, Missouri - Aerial Views There are no maps in this series at this time. 3-7: Kansas City, Missouri - Metro Area This series contains historical maps and road maps of the surrounding metropolitan area of Kansas City in both Missouri and Kansas from 1885 to 2009. Maps in this series cover varying portions of Jackson, Clay, and Platte Counties in Missouri as well as Johnson, Wyandotte, and Leavenworth Counties in Kansas. Additional areas in both states are also represented. 3-8: Jackson County & Independence, Missouri This series contains maps specifically relating to Jackson County, Missouri as well as the city of Independence. Dates range from 1881 to 1970. The majority of the series consists of road maps of Jackson County, but plat maps, historical maps, and maps of Rotary Club Boys' Camp, Lake Jacomo, and Lake Tapawingo are included as well. 3-9: Missouri Maps in this series relate directly to Missouri as a territory and a state. These maps depict Missouri cities, townships, railroads, roads, lakes, and historical events and range from 1808 to 1975, though some more recently-published maps are not dated. Illinois, Iowa, and Arkansas are also represented. 3-10: Missouri - Counties These maps relate to specific Missouri counties, excluding Jackson County. The majority of the maps date between 1880 and 1966, showing cities, roads, railroads, schools, churches, and townships. A 2006 Civil War map of Cass County is also included. 3-11: Kansas These maps relate to Kansas as a territory and a state, as well as cities and counties located therein, dating between 1854 and 1961. Kansas roads, railroads, and historical events are also depicted. 3-12: U.S. & States This series contains maps that show the United States as well as individual states and territories, excluding maps specific to Missouri and Kansas. Dates range between 1642 and 1987, though most of the maps from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries are reproductions. This series also contains maps regarding Native American tribes, territories, and reservations. 3-13: Pioneer Trails Maps in this series relate to routes taken by pioneers, traders, and early explorers across the United States. These maps were printed between 1908 and 1948 and depict the trails as they were when in use in the 19th century. A map of Pony Express Routes is also included. 3-14: Railroad Lines This series contains maps that relate to specific railroads and the national railroad system dating between 1867 and 1911. 3-15: Countries & Continents This series contains maps with coverage areas outside of the United States. The series currently consists of one undated map of Mexico when it was under the government of Spain, referred to as “New Spain.” 3-16: Missouri River Maps in this series depict the Missouri River and its immediate vicinity. The series consists of nine U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hydrographic survey maps from 1971 of various points of the river in the vicinity of Kansas City; three maps of abandoned shipwrecks along the Missouri River Channel; and a map of approved irrigation, reservoirs, and power systems from 1945. 3-17: Geological The majority of this series consists of geological maps of Missouri created by state and federal geological survey departments. Other states represented include Kansas, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. These maps date from 1890 through 1951, though multiple maps from 1890s and 1900s are reprinted editions. Series 4: Cabinet Maps, 1719-2007 and n.d. This series consists of 17 subseries of maps arranged by coverage area and type. Also depicted are the towns of Westport and Kansas City, Kansas, as well as additional portions of Kansas immediately west of the state line. 4-2: Kansas City, Missouri - Business & Residential Districts This series includes maps of business and residential districts and areas within and adjacent to Kansas City, Missouri. The maps date between 1914 and 2005. 4-3: Kansas City, Missouri - Wards & Polling Districts These maps show the wards, precincts, Board of Election Commissioners, and voting districts of Kansas City, Missouri. Most of this series consists of maps of county and state legislative districts from 1982 through 1994, though maps from 1900, 1950, and the 1960s are also included. 4-4: Kansas City, Missouri - School Districts Maps in this series depict Kansas City, Missouri school locations and district and sub- district boundaries between 1930 and 2002. 4-5: Kansas City, Missouri - Parks & Public Transportation This series contains maps relating to the parks, boulevards, and transportation systems of Kansas City, Missouri. Multiple maps contain information on streetcar and bus routes. Dates range between 1900 and 1960. 4-6: Kansas City, Missouri - Aerial Views This series contains a set of 26 aerial photographic maps of Kansas City, Missouri printed in 1964.
