For exiting passengers, the sign sequence is the reverse of that for entering passengers’ signs. Where a stair leads to all exits, Exit only the word “Exit” with the appropriate directional arrow is used then differentiation of multiple exit options is made on sub- sequent signs.
Where there is a choice of exits, appropriate information on Whitehall St South Ferry the alternatives should be added.
At station exits, specific information regarding the street- Elevator to South Ferry level intersection should be added. The name of the West side of Whitehall St street always appears first.
At stations where passengers customarily transfer to buses or Staten Island Ferry commuter rail to continue their trip (intermodal stations), Whitehall Street M1 M6 M15 appropriate bus or train information should be added.
Passengers exiting trains may want connection to another Whitehall St route in the same subway station complex rather than exiting R W the station. In this case, directional information to other train routes should be included with exit information (see page 1.15).
This is an example of a new “Exit” module being uswed where Staten Island Ferry space is tight. Text for “Exit” should be 4 1/4” with 5” arrow. Whitehall Street M1 M6 M15 MTA Sign Manual NYC Transit System Overview 1.11 2009 Subway Platform Level Typical Plan and Examples Two Track Platform

The train information or platform edge sign is the final sign in the station entry sequence. It displays general destination/ direction information, route information, and detailed service information. It is located at the platform edge, parallel to the track near the foot (or head) of a staircase or escalator leading to the platform, and the entrances leading directly onto the platform in such areas which use high entrance turnstyles. It is repeated at all stairs leading to the platform (see page 3.2).
This sign is to be placed at both ends of the platform, installed on end of platform gates, to warn passengers not to proceed beyond that point. On side platforms, only one sign is required at either end. On island platforms, either one or two signs are to be placed at each end, depending on the distance between signs or the presence of any obstructions that would impair visibility fron one side or the other (see page 3.7). Do not enter or cross tracks MTA Sign Manual NYC Transit System Overview 1.13 2009 Subway Platform Level Station Identification Bay Ridge Avenue Jackson Roosevelt Av Heights
Primary Station Identification The station name is to be mounted along the platform at 60’ intervals from the center. This sign should be installed so as not to be obscured by other signs, architectural conditions, or fixtures. On the primary station-identification sign, the name of the sta- tion should be spelled out in full. Abbreviations are permitted to designate Avenue or Street only where space is limited. Where the station also has a secondary name (e.g., 81 Street/Museum of natural History), the secondary name may be placed in smaller letters on the right side of the sign. Wall-mounted signs are allowed in special cases; never are signs to cover mosaic tiles. Contact Station Signage for details.
Secondary Station Identification 110 To reinforce the visibility of the station name in York stations with columns, the station name is Street Street repeated in a smaller size on signs mounted on the columns. The signs are to be placed on both sides of every other column with the face of the sign oriented perpendicular to the track. Numbered Station Named Station For stations whose names include both numbers and names, e.g., 14 St–Union Square, column ID signs should display each alternate name on 14 Union every fourth column. All stairs leading from the platform must be identified at the foot of the stairs. The sign must also contain the appropriate direc- Exit tional arrow and the appropriate streets it leads to.
Transfers to another route without paying an additional fare is indicated by the use of the appropriate route designator. If the transfer leads to service in both directions, only the route 4 5 6 designator is used.
If the transfer is to service in one direction only, the direc- Uptown & tion of service or destination should also be included. The Bronx 4
Many stairs provide access to both exits and transfers. In these cases, the exit information always appears on the left, before the transfer information. The exit module may 5 be shortened to accommodate limited space (see page 3.3).

MTA Sign Manual NYC Transit Graphic Standards 2.1 2009 Subway Sign Module Specifications
The module is the basic element of the sign system. It is made up of the following elements: A 1 1/2" black band: used for all signs except Type D (see pages 4.8–11, Pan-formed Hanging), where it is replaced by the sign hanger. B 1/8" white band: always used. C Message panel: generally black, but modules may be red for some specific signs (see page 2.25 and Section 3, Sign Layouts).

The standard sign module with the addition of text, route designator, directional arrow, or symbol is used alone or in combination to make up station signs. Blank panels are used to separate two different messages on the same sign. Overall length of sign panels is Q33 generally measured in increments of one foot (12"). Signs up to 8' long are fabricated as a single panel. For longer signs, place joint on a module division; joints should not break letters or words. Text may run across two or more modules. Wherever possible any module containing text should be extended to the next whole foot before other elements are added.
This illustration shows a sign made up of multiple modules containing arrow, text, and a route designator. Note that the text modules have been extended to the next whole foot before adding other elements. In the 12" 12" 12" 12" 12" layout and specification of sign sizes, text length must be measured accurately so an adequate number of modules is provided for. On directional signage, discs and diamonds are arranged in alphabetical order from left to right, followed by numbers. When symbols are used on two rows, they should be arranged horizontally with care taken to keep color groups together on the same line.

Colors in subway signs designate function. Route designator colors correspond to the NYC Transit subway map and are based on avenues of operation in Manhattan. Sign colors are used to distinguish general informational and directional signs (black) from exit and warning signs (red). All text is white, except as noted. Permanent signs in the subway system are made of steel with a porcelain enamel matte finish. Exceptions to this, for temporary signs only, are the use of adhesive-backed vinyl, sheet metal, and embedded fiberglass, with silk-screened colors. In addition to signage, other elements are subject to color standards indicated in the chart below.
