Handling of Out-Of-Vocabulary Words in Japanese-English
International Journal of Asian Language Processing 29(2):61-86 61 The Syntactic Evolvement of the Chinese Word “Wei” Yan Li School of Foreign Languages, Shaanxi Normal University Xi’an, China, 710062 [email protected] Abstract Based on Beijing University CCL corpus, this article investigated the functions and meanings of the word “Wei”(维) in different dynasties. “维” could be a word in ancient times while it functions as verb, noun, pronoun, preposition, auxiliary word, etc.. But from West Jin Dynasty there appeared disyllabic words including “维” and the situation of co-existing of monosyllabic words and disyllabic words lasted till the Republic of China. Now “维” as a word disappeared and only as a morpheme in disyllabic or multisyllabic words. The transformation from a monosyllabic word to a monosyllabic morpheme is a very common phenomenon in Chinese. Keywords “Wei”(维), syntactic evolvement, morphemization 1. Introduction The word “Wei”(维) is a very common morpheme in modern Chinese, but its evolution is of specialty which is worth exploring. In Chinese history, a morpheme has ever been a word which could be used independently, but in modern Chinese, many monosyllabic words lower their status to monosyllabic morphemes (Dong Xiufang, 2004). “维”was a word in ancient times, which is pictophonetic while its character from 糸(mì)and 隹(zhuī). “糸” means “rope, string”. The combination of “糸”and “隹” means ‘to draw forth more than three ropes from a higher place to the ground and enclose a hollow cone’. The original meaning is “rope” which is used to form a cone. -

Northern Song Reflections on the angT Abstract NORTHERN SONG REFLECTIONS ON THE TANG Jeffrey Rice Victor Mair In the mid-eleventh century Chinese intellectuals argued about history, and left their competing narratives to us in print. They contested how history should be written, and what relevant lessons ought to be adapted to the changing society of Song 宋 (960-1279) dynasty China. They were particularly concerned with the history of the long-lasting Tang 唐 (618-907) dynasty. They revised the official history of the Tang on a variety of levels: they used primary sources differently to analyze evidence, developed a new literary language to write historical prose, employed editorial critiques differently to draw political morals by analogy to historical events, and harnessed new print technology to disseminate their views to a wider audience. This dissertation analyzes the revisions to the history of the Tang produced in the eleventh century on each of these levels: historiography, linguistics, politics, and print culture. These elements all functioned to reinvent the ancient ideal of the Confucian scholar in terms that advanced the interests of the burgeoning class of literati officials in Northern Song China. -

Cultural and Religious Studies, March 2019, Vol. 7, No. 3, 142-159 doi: 10.17265/2328-2177/2019.03.002 D DAVID PUBLISHING A Probe Into Li Bai’s Fifty-Nine Pre-Tang Style Poems (XIX)* ZHANG Pei Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, Beijing, China There are many problems worth discussing in Li Bai’s Fifty-Nine Pre-Tang Style Poems (XIX), which can be named Lotus Flower Peak in Huashan Mountain (西岳莲花山). From ancient times to the present, interpreters have put forward different opinions on the theme, period, and writing place of the poem, but they have not provided reliable evidence. From the perspective of historical geography, this paper elaborates on “Lotus Flower Peak” or “Lotus Flower Mountain” (莲花峰或莲花山) and “Luoyang Chuan” (洛阳川) in the poem, and puts forward a series of viewpoints for the first time. Li Bai chose Huashan Mountain as the starting point of his journey to the mystical landscape because of the special location of Yuntai Peak. Its position is easy to observe from east to west, thus forming an eastward immortal route contrary to the western route of the rebels of An Lushan and Shi Siming (安史叛军). It shows great significance to the division of the poet’s personal life stages that Li Bai started to use the word “Luoyang Chuan”. There is a significant difference between this word and the pure word “Luoyang” when it combines the applied allusion of the An-Shi Rebellion. According to the research results, this poem may be written during this period from January in 756 A.D. -
