PUBLIC RELEASE R&T activities on composite structures for existing and future military A/C platforms at Airbus DS, Military Aircraft Mircea Calomfirescu, Rainer Neumaier, Thomas Körwien, Kay Dittrich Airbus Defence and Space GmbH Rechliner Str. 1 85077 Manching GERMANY [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper gives a short overview on the state of the art in composite aerostructures for civil and military aircraft. Major challenges are highlighted in this context and the requirements from military aircraft point of view are illustrated, derived from existing and future military aircraft perspectives. The main objective of the paper is to present the R&T activities in the aerostructure research program called FFS, advanced aerostructures. The activities range here from structural bonding, advanced radomes, new thermoplastic composite technologies and new materials and structures for low observability purposes. A brief insight is given to each of the topic highlighting the challenges and approaches, finishing with a summary of future trends and emerging technologies. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Composites offer several advantages over metallic aerostructures in civil as well as in military aircraft industry including reduced weight, less maintenance effort and costs due to “corrosion-free” composites and a superior fatigue behaviour compared to aluminium. The thermal expansion is much less and the material waste (“buy to fly ratio”) is more advantageous compared to aluminium structures. However, these advantages come along with higher material and manufacturing costs. For the prepreg technology for example the material has to be stored at -18°C, energy and investment intensive autoclaves are necessary and for quality assurance 100% non-destructive testing (NDT) is required in contrast to aluminium structures. -

No part of this publication may be reproduced without the written permission of the copyright holder Abstract Increasing environmental awareness, uncertain economic climates and fluctuating fuel prices have led to airlines investigating the means to lower aircraft fuel burn, emissions and noise, while maintaining the highest possible safety standards. This is done in order to reduce operating costs as well as a desire to offer customers more environmentally responsible transport options. The jet engine has been a fundamental part of passenger aircraft travel and has evolved to become more efficient and quiet. With an aim to improve the overall efficiency of the gas turbine, the industry has consistently sought to improve thermal and propulsive efficiency. Higher thermal efficiencies have been achieved through increased overall pressure ratios and the turbine entry temperatures, while higher propulsive efficiencies has been achieved through increase in bypass ratios. Conventional technology is however reaching the limits of any further improvements. This study seeks to investigate these design limits for the conventional aero gas turbine and focusses on the propulsion system of short to medium range jet aircraft, specifically catering to low cost airline operations in Europe. A techno-economic risk analysis approach was followed through the utilisation of a flexible multi-disciplinary framework. This allows a multitude of critical parameters and factors to be investigated and their effects established. -

Juli 2011 wurde die Bundeswehr nach 55 Jahren zur Freiwilligenarmee. Voran gegangen war eine jahrelange, emotional geführte Debatte. Be fürworter der Wehrpflicht hatten wiederholt darauf hingewie sen, dass es die Wehrpflicht sei, die dafür gesorgt habe, dass die Bundeswehr in der Mitte der Gesellschaft verankert geblieben und nicht wie die Reichswehr der Weimarer Republik zum Staat im Staate geworden sei. Kritiker hatten dagegen bemängelt, dass von Wehrgerechtigkeit aufgrund der hohen Ausmusterungs quote keine Rede mehr sein könne. Letzten Endes ermöglich ten Sparzwänge und die Notwendigkeit einer grundlegenden Reform der Bundeswehr die rasche und relativ einvernehmliche Aussetzung der Wehrpflicht.
