The authors discussed are Franz Kafa, James Joyce, Robert Musil, Georg Büchner, J.M. Barrie, Robert Walser, Rudyard Kipling and Witold Gombrowicz. The main argument is that the remark- able proliferation around 1900 of novels whose protagonists, by some means or other, avoid growing up is not due to a somewhat twisted afliation to the genre of the late and ultimately failed Bildungsroman, but rather to an underestimated branch of modernism. At frst glance, their strategy of retreat looks like a finching from societal responsibility, yet the opposite turns out to be true. Instead of repre- senting an early instance of the prolonged adolescence that has nowadays become proverbial, their recoiling from maturity entails a critique of the totalizing tenden- cies inherent to the ideals of Bildung and Enlightenment. That is certainly true for the youths populating this dissertation. Since they are literary characters, however, their capriciousness, delusions of grandeur and occasional despair are mainly benefcial—if not for themselves, then for the reader. They ofer, albeit tongue-in-cheek and indirectly, perspective in a no less complicated time, roughly the frst decade of the twentieth century, epitome of modernity, whose name already suggests an obsession with anything that is not old—in those years, the querelle des anciens et des modernes is leaning toward one side. Of course, the cliché of youth is wrong in supposing an internal, unchanging essence where there is in fact a mercurial thing shot through with historical trans- formation. The experiences of the children of the European bourgeoisie at the beginning of the century difered tremendously from those of their parents, let alone those of their grandparents. In a survey of the situation of German youth around 1900, the historian Thomas Nipperdey mentions the patriarchal and au- thoritarian imprint that limited children’s spontaneity and trust in their parents. Beck, 1990) 117. 1 scenes from Joyce and Musil illustrate, was no less—in the arena of the classroom, presided over by the teacher—a space of rigid discipline and— behind drawn cur- tains, played out among alleged equals—of frequently cruel games of domination. In a remarkable essay on rebellious youth in Hobsbawm’s long nineteenth century the Italian historian Sergio Luzzato points out that with the end of the an- cien régime and the rise of the bourgeoisie throughout Europe the traditional role of youth—“a culturally recognizable role and a factor in social cohesion”³— under- went a tremendous change. It was no accident, he writes, that reformist groups as diferent as the Masonic lodges of the Carbonari sects, the Saint-Simonian church or the so-called Icariens, a group of early socialists determined to put into practice the idea of a communist society as described in the utopian novel Voyage en Iacarie (1840) by Étienne Cabet, were united in their concerns “with fnding an associative formula that could reconcile the egalitarian aspirations contained in the idea of fraternity with the hierarchical order guaranteed by the recognition of paternity” (175). Throughout the century, this idea of fraternity at odds with paternity in- spired protests of young workers and intellectuals—on the barricades in Paris in the July of 1830, immortalized by Delacroix, of the Russian Decemberists in the 1860s, whom Dostoevsky was associated with, of the artists and writers standing up for Alfred Dreyfus in the 1890s and of the German Wandervögel who, just afer ³ Sergio Luzzato, “Young Rebels and Revolutionaries, 1789–1917,” in A History of Young Peo- ple in the West, ed. by Giovanni Levi et al., vol. 2 (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1997) 174. 2 1900, in Luzatto’s words “attacked the tranquil Wilhelmine bourgeoisie and its la- bored certainties” (174). And they, in turn, inspired fear as well. In order to deal with this fear—no matter how real or fantasized—the pater- nal authorities, frst of all the representatives of the nation states, concocted what Luzzato calls “a kind of delaying tactic,” designed to postpone “the moment when young men could assume political and social responsibilities” (175). These measures comprised raising the voting age, the prolongation of schooling and the invention of organizations that were either outright militant, such as the Deutscher Wehrverein (German Army Club), or only latently so such as the Pfadfnder in Ger- many and the Boy Scouts in England. They were designed to put the amorphous time between the end of mandatory education and the beginning of military ser- vice to disciplinary use. The activities ranged from so-called beer trips, visits to famous battle felds and patriotic tours to war memorials on one side to recreation- al outings and outdoor games on the other. The militant Jungdeutschland-Bund (Union of Young Germany), for example, was founded in 1911 by feld marshal Wilhelm Leopold Colmar von der Goltz. As early as 1883, he had published the pamphlet Das Volk in Wafen (The Armed People), in which he emphasized the role of youth. (Bramsche: Rasch, 1998) 33. 3 nifcant numbers of a generational cohort took part in them, greatly infuencing the general atmosphere.⁵ In spite of the rigidity and hierarchies of the Scout movement, the regular outings—which along with rules of conduct, a downright code of honor, formed the center of the appeal to its members—were experienced as liberating and, par- ticularly in Germany, even as potentially critical of the state, with its association of asphyxiating bureaucracy, necessarily an indoor activity. More than half a century earlier, Heinrich Heine’s contemporary Ludwig Börne had summed up the corre- sponding sentiment that now gave way to a putatively unpolitical cult of hardening one’s body in nature, poised with an unfinching morale, in a nutshell: “It is be- cause every man is born a Roman that bourgeois society seeks to de-Romanize him.”⁶ The Boy Scouts saw themselves as the vanguard of re-Romanization. ⁵ By 1914, in only three years, the Jungdeutschland-Bund counted 680,000 members. Cited in Luzzato, 176. 4 It bespeaks the complicated politics of youth at the time that Börne’s anger with the perceived quenching of youthful energy in the service of a liberal society⁷ through an anxious reactionary state, expressed by means of a martial metaphor, reverberated, two generations later, in an embrace of proto-military organizations for the sake of personal freedom. Luzzato writes, resolutely: In the end, the pedagogical eforts of two generations of educators would have the desired efect: the youth rebellion of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century was diferent from what had preceded it, aiming to serve the interests of the nation rather than yearning for a revolutionary transformation of society. That is why it es- caped the control of the socialist parties even more than that of bourgeois organizations.⁸ This is an attempt at explaining the astonishing⁹ enthusiasm of war that gripped the vast majority of young Europeans in the years before and at least for some time afer 28 July 1914, one month afer the Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip had as- sassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo.¹⁰ A recent study by ⁷ Börne (1786–1837), a publicist and critic, was actively engaged in furthering democratic ideals in times of Restauration.

    Postmemory, Post-dependence, Post- trauma: Negotiating Jewish Identity 9 in Post-Communist Poland Aleksandra Szczepan In studies concerning identity practices in contemporary, post-communist Poland, three issues seem to be crucial: the memory strategies they involve, the previous state of dependency towards which they define themselves, and their relationship with the historical traumas they have to overcome. These are labeled by three catchy terms: postmemory, post-dependence, and post-trauma; these perspectives – similar to other “posts”, e.g. postmodernism or postsecularism – are characterized by several common features: specific belatedness, temporal shift, the practice of quoting and mediation, defining the present always in relation to a troubling past, oscillating between continuity and rupture. Secondly, all of them are a sort of loan-notion from Western memory, trauma and Holocaust studies, hastily adapted to Polish realities. Even post-dependence discourse – which is to be understood as a set of signifying and identity practices that have been undertaken after the situation of dependence came to an end – was introduced to the vocabulary of Polish humanities as a specific remedy and substitute for the postcolonial perspective, which turned out to be quite resistant to being convincingly applied to the Polish cultural situation. As I will try to show, adapting categories from the Western theoretical vocabulary or creating new ones in order to examine Polish culture and identity strategies may be fully legitimate only if we discern the basic differences this local perspective engages, and recognize the entanglement of several factors it always results in. DOI 10.5871/jba/004.197 Posted 18 October 2016. © The British Academy 2016 Modernist perambulations through time and space: From Enlightened walking to crawling, stalking, modelling and street-walking Lecture in Modern Languages read 19 May 2016 ANNE FUCHS Fellow of the Academy Abstract: Analysing diverse modes of walking across a wide range of texts from the Enlightenment period and beyond, this article explores how the practice of walking was discovered by philosophers, educators and writers as a rich discursive trope that stood for competing notions of the morally good life. The discussion proceeds to then investigate how psychological, philosophical and moral interpretations of bad prac- tices of walking in particular resurface in texts by Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann and the interwar writer Irmgard Keun. It is argued that literary modernism transformed walking from an Enlightenment trope signifying progress into the embodiment of moral and epistemological ambivalence. In this process, walking becomes an expression of the disconcerting experience of modernity. The paper concludes with a discussion of walking as a gendered performance: while the male walkers in the modernist texts under discussion suffer from a bad gait that leads to ruination, the new figure of the flâneuse manages to engage in pleasurable walking by abandoning the Enlightenment legacy of the good gait.     1 Introduction Michael Hattaway What does it mean to speak of ‘the English Renaissance’? Within the parts of this volume, defining historical contexts and perspectives, the next offering readings of particular texts along with accounts of genres and modes, and the last presenting engagements with a number of critical issues and debates, we approach the question in a variety of ways. The word ‘Renaissance’ designates ‘rebirth’, a metaphor applied, from its begin- nings, to a cultural vision that originated in Italy. For the nineteenth and twentieth centuries this was projected in a magnificent synthesis by Jacob Burckhardt, The Civ- ilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1860). Burckhardt retrospectively laid out a master proposal to revive the art and learning of the classical world, to emulate the grandeur of ancient cities, to stimulate science and geographical discovery, and to produce art and literature that imitated antique models, an undertaking which was dedicated as much to the profane as to the spiritual. Rival city states of Italy required monuments to enhance their fame, and thus ensured patronage for the writers and artists who duly bequeathed to posterity the texts and great architectural and visual exemplars with which we are all familiar. Burckhardt’s categories, which rest upon notions of ‘genius’, ‘individuality’ and secularization, have percolated into all too many derivative hand- books for the period: they may not, however, fit the English experience. England did enjoy a phenomenal energizing of literature: this is an age that, tra- ditionally, has at its centre, Spenser and Sidney, Marlowe and Nashe, Shakespeare, and Jonson. Ben Jonson, exceptionally, did publish his ‘works’ in a manner befitting an author of the Renaissance, although some of the dramatic genres he used have medieval origins.

    Guston, Philip Guston 9/8/10 6:04 PM Page 1 INTRODUCTION DORE ASHTON “Create, artist! Don’t talk!” the aging Goethe counseled his contemporaries in 1815. The painter Degas seconded the old sage when he told the young poet Paul Valéry that when the muses finished their day’s work they didn’t talk, they danced. But then, as Valéry vividly recalled, Degas went on to talk of his own art for hours on end. Painters have always talked, and some, such as Delacroix, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Malevich, and Motherwell, also wrote. Certain painters, Goya, for example, also deftly used language to augment their imagery. Like Degas, who liked to talk with poets and even engaged the inscrutable Mallarmé, Guston liked talking with poets, and they with him. Among his most attentive listeners was his friend the poet Clark Coolidge, whose ear was well attuned to Guston’s sometimes arcane utterances and who has selected some of the painter’s most eloquent sessions of writing and talking, resulting in a mosaic of a life - time of thought. I was also one of Guston’s interlocutors for almost thirty years. I recognize with pleasure Coolidge’s unfurling of Guston’s cycles of talk and non-talk; his amusing feints and dodges when confronted with obtuse questioners, his wondrous bursts of language when he felt inspired, his sometimes playful contrariness, his satisfaction in being a provocateur, and his consistent preoccupation with serious aesthetic ques - tions through out his working life as a painter. Above all, I recognize Guston’s funda - mental rebelliousness, which manifested itself not only in his artistic preferences but in his politics, his choice of artistic battlefields, and his intimate studio life.

    The Rees and Carrington Extracts From the diaries of ` Caroline Kipling 1910 1910 Jan. Engelberg. No entries till John leaves for school with Ellen, 26 Jan. Their first week at Engelberg (they left Bateman’s on 30 December 1909) was not much fun: Carrie had been ill at home – it had been a very wet autumn – and remained ill for at least the first week of their stay at Engelberg. Kipling wrote to his mother-in-law describing their tribulations (PINNEY, Letters, Vol. 3, p. 404-5). Ellen was evidently one of the maids at Bateman’s. LYCETT, (p. 404) lists a maid named Ellen among the Bateman’s staff who attended a parish memorial service for King Edward VII later that summer. It must have been quite an adventure for her to travel out to Switzerland at her employer’s expense, and something of a responsibility to take charge of his 12-year-old son to take back to England, though John was quite a seasoned traveller. Jan. The only entry between December 19h 1909 and February 20th 1910 is on Jan. 26 stating that John left for school with Ellen. Letters, however show that the Ks left home for Engelberg on 30 Dec. `09. 16 Feb. (An allusion to the Baldwins – with them.) There’s a further confirmation of the presence of the Baldwins at Engelberg in the letter to John cited immediately below. 26 Feb. To Geneva. Saw Mr .     THIS IS THE CHAPEL: HERE, MY SON Rudyard Kipling and the Battle of Loos Dedicated to the Memory of Patrick Neafsy of Achadh Mór, Private 6534, 2nd Battalion Irish Guards, killed in action, 27 September 1915 Edward Neafcy, October 2008 After 93 years, my brother David has brought home to Mayo the story of Patrick Neafsy and his short life as a British soldier. He was in the 2nd Irish Guards. The Battle of Loos was fought from the 25 September to the 8 October, 1915. It was the biggest battle in British history up to then. Today if people know of it at all, it is generally because Rudyard Kipling’s son John was lost there. He was an officer in the Irish Guards. Patrick and John Kipling died in the same action. Patrick and John were among 32 Irish Guards who died on 27 September 1915 on a flat Flanders field exposed to German artillery, machine gun and rifle fire. Such was the slaughter that the Germans called it the Leichenfeld (Corpses Field) von Loos. Despite Remembrance Day having been so well observed in my lifetime, I had not been motivated to think too much about the Great War with its apparent senselessness. David’s and my trip to Loos made me wonder about the motivations of lads such as Patrick who responded to Kitchener’s ‘Your Country Needs You’ recruitment campaign, and the motivation of such a man as 1 Kipling deliversRudyard a recrui Kipting ling to support the war. From the viewpoint of pro- revolutionaries, Burke’s Reflections gave shape to the conservative forces they were up against; its publication provoked a ‘pamphlet war’, which included such key radical responses to the Reflections as Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Man (1790) and Tom Paine’s The Rights of Man (1791).1 In Burke’s treatise, he expressed a concern for the fate of French civilisation and its culture, and in so doing coined a term that would haunt his counter-revolutionary campaign. Capping his deliberation about what would happen to French civilisation following the overthrow of its nobility and clergy, which he viewed as the twin guardians of European culture, he wrote, ‘learning will be cast into the mire, and trodden down under the hoofs of a swinish multitude’. This chapter asks what part the Greek and Roman classics played in the cultural war between British reformists and conservatives in the periodical press of the late 1810s and early 1820s.
