HARTMAN RNEST GEORGE MERRITT, emeritus professor of physics at ECornell University and long-time member of that de- partment and personification of American physics, died June 5, 1948, in Ithaca, New York, after a short illness. He was born April 28, 1865, (two weeks after Lincoln’s assassina- tion) in Indianapolis. As a youngster he already showed an inclination toward his adult vocations of editor and scien- tist. By the age of eight or so, in Indiana no less, he had founded and edited two journals, Sea Breeze, and its succes- sor, The Mountain Echo, which he also printed and bound; and he had obtained a modest telescope which he housed in his small observatory. The Indianapolis Journal reported on “the boy astronomer (whose) eager study of the stars may some day make him famous.” In high school Merritt showed a talent for mathematics, winning a small prize. After one year at Purdue he went to Cornell’s engineering school, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. When the mathematical and as- tronomical inclinations disappeared is not clear. -

Franz Boas’s Legacy of “Useful Knowledge”: The APS Archives and the Future of Americanist Anthropology1 REGNA DARNELL Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology University of Western Ontario t is a pleasure and privilege, though also somewhat intimidating, to address the assembled membership of the American Philosophical ISociety. Like the august founders under whose portraits we assemble, Members come to hear their peers share the results of their inquiries across the full range of the sciences and arenas of public affairs to which they have contributed “useful knowledge.” Prior to the profes- sionalization of science in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the boundaries between disciplines were far less significant than they are today. Those who were not experts in particular topics could rest assured that their peers were capable of assessing both the state of knowledge in each other’s fields and the implications for society. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington were all polymaths, covering what we now separate into several kinds of science, humanities, and social science in ways that crosscut one another and illustrate the permeability of disciplinary boundaries. The study of the American Indian is a piece of that multidisciplinary heri- tage that constituted the APS and continues to characterize its public persona. The Founding Members of the Society all had direct and seminal experience with the Indians and with the conflict between their traditional ways of life and the infringing world of settler colonialism. On the one hand, they felt justified in exploiting Native resources, as surveyors, treaty negotiators, and land speculators. On the other hand, the Indians represented the uniqueness of the Americas, of the New World that defined itself apart from the decadence of old Europe. -

Corner. His story ends in 1953-a major turning point. That year, the Institute, which from its inception had been deeply in volved in post-doctoral education and research, became a graduate uni versity, offering the degree of Doctor of Philosophy to a small number of exceptional pre-doctoral students. Since 1953, The Rockefeller University's research and education pro grams have widened. Its achievements would fill a volume at least equal in size to Dr. Corner's history. Pending such a sequel, John Kobler, a journalist and biographer, has written a brief account intended to acquaint the general public with the recent history of The Rockefeller University. Today, as in the beginning, it is an Institution committed to excellence in research, education, and service to human kind. A Nobel laureate and a major contributor to modern genetics, Dr. Lederberg succeeded Frederick Seitz, the distinguished physicist who served as pres ident for 10 years and under whose leadership The Rockefeller University Council was founded. As part of the installation activities, the Council sponsored a colloquium on the outlook for biomedical research and education from the vantage points of the University and its two nearest institutional neighbors-Memorial-Sloan Ketter ing Cancer Center and Cornell University Medical College. The three speakers not only provided unique insights based on their individual involvement in the scientific pursuit, but also voiced concerns shared by the institutions they represent. Some of the major themes emerging from the colloquium were explored, eloquently and trenchantly, by Dr. Lederberg in his installation address. We are indebted to the generosity of The Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation that makes it possible to present these four statements to the wider audience they deserve. -

Johnson Portland State University ©2010 Abstract Willard Libby’s development of carbon-14 dating at the University of Chicago immediately following World War II provided an unprecedented opportunity for the collaboration of archaeologists with a physical chemist. Libby’s need for archaeological samples to test the dating process (1947-1951) meant that he relied upon the Committee on Radioactive Carbon 14, formed by the American Anthropological Association, for datable materials, as well as for assistance in all other archaeologically related aspects of the testing phase. The committee, under the leadership of archaeologist Frederick Johnson, served the mandated function of providing assistance to Libby, but simultaneously endeavored to utilize the new dating method to promote the development of the authority of anthropological professional organizations and further establish Americanist archaeology in a national and global context. -
