Corner. His story ends in 1953-a major turning point. That year, the Institute, which from its inception had been deeply in volved in post-doctoral education and research, became a graduate uni versity, offering the degree of Doctor of Philosophy to a small number of exceptional pre-doctoral students. Since 1953, The Rockefeller University's research and education pro grams have widened. Its achievements would fill a volume at least equal in size to Dr. Corner's history. Pending such a sequel, John Kobler, a journalist and biographer, has written a brief account intended to acquaint the general public with the recent history of The Rockefeller University. Today, as in the beginning, it is an Institution committed to excellence in research, education, and service to human kind. A Nobel laureate and a major contributor to modern genetics, Dr. Lederberg succeeded Frederick Seitz, the distinguished physicist who served as pres ident for 10 years and under whose leadership The Rockefeller University Council was founded. As part of the installation activities, the Council sponsored a colloquium on the outlook for biomedical research and education from the vantage points of the University and its two nearest institutional neighbors-Memorial-Sloan Ketter ing Cancer Center and Cornell University Medical College. The three speakers not only provided unique insights based on their individual involvement in the scientific pursuit, but also voiced concerns shared by the institutions they represent. Some of the major themes emerging from the colloquium were explored, eloquently and trenchantly, by Dr. Lederberg in his installation address. We are indebted to the generosity of The Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation that makes it possible to present these four statements to the wider audience they deserve. -

Little Science: the Paradoxes of Research and Education in the Sciences at Swarthmore College, 1935-1965 By Darwin H. Stapleton Much of the history of American sciences in the mid-twentieth century has focused on the triumph of “big science,” based on the combination of federal funding, vast increases in the scale of instrumentation and experimentation, and the alliance of universities with agencies of government, particularly the military.1 This approach documents the vast and clearly consequential changes in American sciences that are necessary for understanding the creation of what President Dwight Eisenhower called the “military-industrial complex,” the space program, and the deep technological infrastructure that underpins most advanced science today. But it virtually ignores the education of the scientists themselves – without whom, after all, there would be no science. We became interested in this historical problem through researching and writing a book on Courtney C. Smith, president of Swarthmore College, 1953-1969.2 Though Smith himself, a former professor of English literature, did not have a strong interest in the sciences, our reading of his papers and our investigation of the years leading up to his presidency, convinced us that 1 the sciences at Swarthmore, a small liberal arts college, were vital, important, and worth examining more closely. Moreover, we have looked at several other small liberal arts colleges, such as Juniata, Oberlin, and Reed, which have had reputations for strong science programs, to see whether what we have observed at Swarthmore is part of a bigger story. -

SLICHTER REDERICK SEITZ WAS A BRILLIANT SCIENTIST. He was one of the Ffounders of the field that became known as the physics of condensed matter; a wise and insightful leader of academic and scientific organizations; an influential spokesman for science nationally and internationally; a trusted counselor and adviser of many organizations. His contributions to the field of solid-state physics, to the National Academy of Sciences, and to The Rockefeller University were transforma- tive. Ever alert, he used his influence to help many scientists at crucial stages of their careers. He died in New York on March 2, 2008. I met Fred in 1949 when we both joined the faculty of the Department of Physics of the University of Illinois, he as research professor and I as a brand-new Ph.D. with the rank of instructor. Although he was only 8 years old, he was already a famous scientist. He had been elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1946, and he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences five years later. He was deeply and actively involved in solid-state physics. -

Krebs Collection Books (Octavos)
Special Collections and Archives: Krebs Collection A collection of around 1250 items from the library of Sir Hans Krebs, Lecturer and subsequently Professor of Biochemistry at Sheffield from 1935 to 1954, and Nobel Prize Winner in 1953 for his work, along with Fritz Lipmann, in discovering in living organisms the series of chemical reactions known as the tricarboxylic acid cycle. For further biographical details, see the collection level description for the Krebs Papers (MS 116). The Krebs Collection consists of over 800 books and periodicals, which have been individually catalogued, and over 400 pamphlets, newspaper cuttings and reprints of journal articles, which have been listed. ETLEV WULF BRONK was born in 1897 in New York City, D where his father, Mitchell Bronk, was pastor of the Ascen- sion Baptist Church at 160th Street and Park Avenue. Det received his unusual Christian names through his mother, Marie Wulf, whose father was Detlev Wulf, a businessman in New York City. The family moved to Bayonne, New Jersey in 1900, where his sister, Isabelle, was born in 1903. His later youth (1912-1919) was spent in Troy, New York in the same region of the state where his forebears had lived for many years. Detlev Bronk is a direct descendant of Mattheus Brunck, a "smith" from the Rhenish Palatinate, who came to West Camp, on the Hud- son River, in 1710. A grandson of Mattheus, Abraham, settled about 1797 on a farm near Duanesburg, Schenectady county, which became known as "the Bronk Place." Det's grandfather, Abram Bronk, grew up in Florida, New York. In nearby Man- chester lived Cynthia Brewster, a descendant of the Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower Colony. Abram and Cynthia were married in 1856 after a prolonged courtship, much of it carried on by letter via packets to and from California.
