In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Theology awarded by Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto. © Copyright by Jeffrey Boldt 2018 From Butler to Thornton: A Typology of Conflicting Readings of the Two Books of Scripture and Nature in the Church of England from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century Jeffrey Boldt Doctor of Theology Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto 2018 ABSTRACT This dissertation studies the persistence within modern Anglicanism of (a) a classical "high view" of Scripture as the exemplar of creation, (b) the apologetic and phenomenological advantages of this view in the wake of Joseph Butler (1692-1752) due to (c) the kind of theodicy the Bible displays in contrast to more rationalistic proposals from deism to panentheism. (d) Finally, the view of theodicy and Scripture one takes influences whether or not one reads the two books of Scripture and nature figurally. The "high view" was undercut by nineteenth-century sectarian polemics between Protestants and Tractarians. Yet a minority kept this tradition alive. Lionel Thornton (1884-1960) is important to this project because he escaped from Tractarian and Protestant dead ends. The dissertation lays out this broader Anglican story and then focuses on Thornton, for whose work I provide historical context and a detailed examination. I first analyze his early, philosophical-theological period where he defended an incarnational theodicy over against the panentheistic-monist alternative: the "soul-making" theodicy. Thornton's theodicy led him to take up a realist ("Platonist") metaphysic and phenomenology in order to resist the monist tendency to smooth over antinomies in Scripture and nature, especially the problem of evil. Next, I look at the theodical alternatives through the lens of Thornton and his mentor, John Neville Figgis (1866-1919). In contrast to the Modernist monism of Charles Raven and others, Figgis and Thornton resisted the temptation to offer an etiology of evil. They concluded that grace overcame evil by reordering the past. The last chapter, therefore, looks at Thornton’s view of the ii temporal and cosmic reach of Christ's reordering work of "recapitulation", and the hermeneutical consequences that follow: namely, that having reunited creation by rescuing it from the dispersive power of evil, every trivial detail of creation came to reflect Christ. I argue that this way of handling the Bible follows consistently from a biblical, non-monist, theodicy. Furthermore, I believe Thornton's project shared a family resemblance to Butler's, for, like the latter's, it indicated that the rejection of figural reading implied methodological atheism. This larger argument touches on contemporary hermeneutical debates within the Church.     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    THE INFLUENCE OF BISHOP BUTLER ON RELIGIOUS THOUGHT JOHN L. MURPHY St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee AMONG THE many problems which have continued to face the ¿^Christian world the last three centuries, none is more frequently encountered than that which treats of the relationship between faith and reason. While the sixteenth-century Reformers remained far from a creedless Christianity, their spiritual descendants were, like the Catholics, faced with a new and more far-reaching attack on Chris­ tianity within the very first century following the rise of Protestantism. By the time of Descartes's death in 1650, the stage was all but set for the deistic and rationalistic attempts to reduce Christianity to the realm of natural religion itself. In this period of history, specific lines of thought appeared which were to profoundly influence the religious debates of the future.1 The Kantian reaction to deism was to open the way to the immanentist approach to religion which solidified in such men as Schleiermacher and found its most frank expression in nine­ teenth-century Liberal Protestantism and in its Catholic cousin, Modernism. On the other hand, the Kantian rationalism went on to find a different form of expression in the theopantism of Hegel, only to draw forth the violent opposition of such men as Kierkegaard, leading to the more existentialist concerns of the present.2 Throughout this entire period, however, one element continued to reappear in the many varied discussions: the role of history in relation­ ship to Christian faith. Finding its roots in history, the Christian faith has frequently tended to lapse into an understanding of the certitude of faith that would identify it with that certitude proper to historical conclusions; it was this tendency which continually provoked a series of reactions, coming up to the present moment, in which those who despaired of rooting the certitude of faith in history attempted to come 1 Cf.

Walker This dissertation is a study of the loyalist Church of England clergy in the American Revolution. By reconstructing the experience and identity of this largely-misunderstood group, it sheds light on the relationship between church and empire, the role of religious pluralism and toleration in the American Revolution, the dynamics of loyalist politics, and the religious impact of the American Revolution on Britain. It is based primarily on the loyalist clergy’s own correspondence and writings, the records of the American Loyalist Claims Commission, and the archives of the SPG (the Church of England’s missionary arm). The study focuses on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonies, where Anglicans formed a religious minority and where their clergy were overwhelmingly loyalist. It begins with the founding of the SPG in 1701 and its first forays into America. It then examines the state of religious pluralism and toleration in New England, the polarising contest over the proposed creation of an American bishop after the Seven Years’ War, and the role of the loyalist clergy in the Revolutionary War itself, focusing particularly on conflicts occasioned by the Anglican liturgy and Book of Common Prayer.

In the following paper, it will be argued that Frithjof Schuon is best understood neither as the founder of a new religion (a prophet in the classical sense of the word) nor as a Muslim saint, but as a universal sage, a spokesman for the religio perennis whose connection with Islam, although providential, remains secondary in the context of his message of esoterism, universality and primordiality. Before we engage in an attempt at defining a sage, we will need to refute two types of criticisms against Schuon.

    The Oxford Architectural and Historical Society and the Oxford Movement By S. L. OLLARD (Read before the Society, 31 May, 1939) y the Oxford Movement I understand the religious revival which began B with John Keble's sermon on National Apostasy preached in St. Mary's on 14 July, 1833. The strictly Oxford stage of that Movement, its first chapter, ended in 1845 with the degradation of W. G. Ward in February and the secession to Rome of Mr. Newman and his friends at Littlemore in the following October. I am not very much concerned in this paper with the story after that date, though I have pursued it in the printed reports and other sources up to 1852. The Oxford Movement was at base a moral movement. The effect of 18th century speculation and of the French Revolution had been to force men's minds back to first principles. Reform had begun. In England it had shaken the foundations of the existing parliamentary system, and the Church itself seemed in danger of being reformed away. Some of its supposed safeguards, e.g., the penal laws against Nonconformists and Roman Catholics, had been removed, yet abuses, pluralism and non-residence for instance, remained ob­ vious weaknesses. Meanwhile, most of its official defenders were not armed with particularly spiritual weapons. The men of the Oxford Movement were con­ vinced of a great truth, namely that the English Church was a living part of the one Holy Catholic Church: that it was no state-created body, but part of the Society founded by the Lord Himself with supernatural powers and super­ natural claims.
