Sheldon Kirk Yohannes Campbell March, 2021 Copyright © 2021 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT This study examines the theology and work of five Baptist missionaries (George Liele, John Rowe, William Knibb, Thomas Burchell, and James M. Phillippo) who came to Jamaica during the 18th and 19th century. It purports that there has not been any previous collective study of Calvinistic Baptist missions from 1782 to 1879 in Jamaica. Furthermore, it argues that these men’s theology was largely influenced by Calvinistic theology, which they affirmed and that this in part was responsible for the resilience they had despite the many challenges and trials they had in Jamaica. To test the validity of his claim, the author examines each of the five men’s lives, including their birth, family of origin, education, teachings, speeches, publications, work, character and death. Additionally, he discusses the origin, history, and theology of Calvinistic Baptists to examine how widespread it was during the late eighteenth and late nineteenth century to demonstrate the likelihood that all five men held to this view. He also analyses if they affirmed God’s sovereignty and providence through Arminian, Calvinist, General Baptist and Particular Baptist confessions to locate where they were theologically. This analysis seeks to ascertain whether their views were more in keeping with Calvinism to deduce if they were Particular Baptists or not. Thus, he surveys if they affirmed God’s providence in salvation through Arminian, Calvinist, General Baptist and Particular Baptist confessions and the acronym TULIP (total depravity, unlimited election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and the perseverance of the saints) for each of the four confessions. The reason for this approach is that the Calvinistic doctrines which are usually more emphasised or distinguishable in the lives of believers would be in terms of how they view God’s sovereignty, providence and God’s providence in salvation (namely through the acronym TULIP). iii Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za The author also highlights the positive impact that these five Baptist missionaries made in missions, education, health care, social and economic development and character development too, and partially attributes it to their Calvinistic convictions. Finally, he argues that learning Church History has many advantages. For instance, it can help Christians to avoid mistakes in the past (such as being suspicious of Calvinism). Also, it can assist in informing denominations which unintentionally excluded important areas of their history regarding their origins and the reasons why they did what they did in the past and how that knowledge may benefit them going forward. iv Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za OPSOMMING Hierdie studie ondersoek die teologie en werk van vyf Baptiste-sendelinge (George Liele, John Rowe, William Knibb, Thomas Burchell en James M. Phillippo) wat gedurende die 18de en 19de eeu na Jamaika gekom het. Dit argumenteer dat daar geen vorige kollektiewe studie van Calvinistiese Baptiste-sendings van 1782 tot 1879 in Jamaika was nie. Verder beweer dit dat hierdie mense se teologie grotendeels beïnvloed is deur die Calvinistiese teologie, wat hulle onderskraag het en dat dit deels verantwoordelik was vir die entoesiasme wat hulle gehad het ondanks die vele uitdagings en beproewings wat hulle in Jamaika gehad het. Om die geldigheid van sy argument te toets, ondersoek die outeur elk van die vyf mans se lewens, insluitend hul geboorte, familie van herkoms, opvoeding, leerstellings, toesprake, publikasies, werk, karakter en dood. Verder bespreek hy die oorsprong, geskiedenis en teologie van Calvinistiese Baptiste om te verstaan hoe wydverspreid dit gedurende die laat agtiende en laat negentiende eeu was ten einde aan te toon dat dit waarskynlik was dat al vyf mans hierdie siening gehuldig het. Die studie bespreek ook die sieninge van God se soewereiniteit en voorsienigheid onder Arminiaanse, Calvinistiese, Algemene Baptiste en Besondere Baptiste-belydenisse.. Hierdie analise poog om vas te stel of hulle sienings meer ooreenstem met die Calvinisme om te bepaal of dit spesifieke baptiste was of nie. Daar word dus gevra of en how hulle God se voorsienigheid in redding bevestig het deur Arminiaanse, Calvinistiese, Algemene Baptiste en Besondere Baptiste-belydenisse en die afkorting TULIP (totale verdorwenheid, onbeperkte verkiesing, beperkte versoening, onweerstaanbare genade en die volharding van die heiliges) binne die konteks van die vier geloofstradisies. Die rede vir hierdie benadering is dat die Calvinistiese leerstellings wat gewoonlik duidelik of onderskeibaar is in die lewens van gelowiges, sou te voorskyn kom in terme van hoe hulle God se soewereiniteit, voorsienigheid en God se voorsienigheid in redding beskou (naamlik deur die akroniem TULIP). v Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Die skrywer beklemtoon ook die positiewe impak wat hierdie vyf Baptiste-sendelinge op missies, onderwys, gesondheidsorg, sosiale en ekonomiese ontwikkeling en karakterontwikkeling gehad het, en hy skryf dit gedeeltelik toe aan hul Calvinistiese oortuigings. Ten slotte voer hy aan dat die studie van Kerkgeskiedenis baie voordele inhou. Dit kan Christene byvoorbeeld help om foute in die verlede te vermy (soos om agterdogtig te wees oor Calvinisme). The Debate on a Motion for the Abolition of the Slave-Trade, in the House of Commons (April 2nd, 1792) A copy of the debate held in Parliament, led by MP William Wilberforce that eventually caused a bill (the second to be introduced) to be passed to cease the Slave Trade. There was, however, an important amendment to the bills original form: that the ban would be ‘gradual’ making it almost worthless in actuality. 2. The first minutes book from the foundation and meetings of the Baptist Missionary Society (1792) This minutes book documents the foundation of the Society on October 2nd 1792 and records all its activities until the spring of 1799. Mentioned in the appointed committee are William Carey, Raymond Hogg as Treasurer and Andrew Fuller as Secretary. While the original purpose of the BMS was to “Christianise heathens”, missionaries often found themselves confronted with the realities of slavery in the British colonies and many joined the campaign for abolition. The West Indies Under British Colonial rule, the colonies of the West Indies were producers of major exports such as sugar and coffee.

    George Liele :Negro Slavery's Prophet of Deliverance EORGE LIELE (Lisle, Sharpe) is o:p.e of the unsung heroes of Greligious history, whose exploits and attainments have gone vir­ tually unnoticed except in a few little-known books and journals of Negro history. Liele's spectacular but steady devotion to the cause of his Master began with his conversion in 1773 and subsequent exercise of his ·cc call" in his own and nearby churches; it ended with mUltiple thousands of simple black folk raisec;I from the callous indignity of human bondage to freedom and a glorious citizenship in the king­ dom of God, largely as a consequence of this man's Christian witness in life and word. George was born a slave to slave parents, Liele and Nancy, in servitude to the family of Henry Sharpe in Virginia. From his birth, about 1750, to his eventual freedom in 1773, Liele belonged to the Sharpe family, with whom' he was removed to Burke County, Georgia, prior to 1770. Henry Sharpe, his master, was a Loyalist supporter and a deacon in the Buckhead Creek Baptist Church pastored by the Rev. Matthew Moore. Of his own parents and early years Liele reported in a letter of 1791 written from. Kingston, Jamaica: ~'I was born in Virginia, my father's name was Liele, and my mother's name Nancy; I cannot ascertain much of them, as I went to several parts of America when young, and at length resided in New Georgia; but was informed both by white and black people, that my father was the only black person who knew the Lord in a spiritual way in that country.

    1 ROOTS AND ROUTES The journey embarked upon by Black Loyalists destined for the Baha- mas was not marked by a rupture from their past experiences in colonial America, but rather reflected a continuity shaped by conditions of en- slavement and their entry into a British colony as persons of color. Like West African victims of the transatlantic slave trade, Black Loyalists arriv- ing in the Bahamas did not come as a tabula rasa, but rather brought with them various ideas aboutproof religion, land, politics, and even freedom. Thus, upon arrival in the Bahamas the lessons of the Revolutionary War were appropriated and reinterpreted by Black Loyalist men and women in a va- riety of ways, often with varying consequences. Such complex transmuta- tions within the Bahamas invite an analytical approach that examines the roots of such thought as it emerged out of the social and political world of colonial British North America. A brief examination of leading Black Loyalists in the Bahamas demon- strates that the world they lived in was indelibly shaped by the world they left behind. Prince Williams’ remarkable story began in colonial Georgia where he was born free, but was later “cheated out of his freedom and sold to an American.”1 Although his slave owner is never mentioned by name, Williams’ account reveals that he was forced to serve “this man” when “the British troops came to Georgia.” Taking advantage of the chaos of the American Revolution, Williams, in an act of self-assertion, escaped to the British side in order to claim freedom as a Black Loyalist.

    A MIGHTY EXPERIMENT: THE TRANSITION FROM SLAVERY TO FREEDOM IN JAMAICA, 1834-1838 by ELISABETH GRIFFITH-HUGHES (Under the Direction of Peter C. Hoffer) ABSTRACT When Britain abolished slavery, in 1834, it did not grant immediate freedom to the slaves, but put in place an apprenticeship period of four to six years depending upon occupation designation. This period, along with compensation of 6 million pounds, was awarded to the planters for their property losses. It was meant to be used to "socialize" the former slaves and convert them from enslaved to wage labor. The British government placed the task of overseeing the apprenticeship period in the hands of a force of stipendiary magistrates. The power to punish the work force was taken from the planters and overseers and given to the magistrates who ruled on the complaints brought by planters, overseers, and apprentices, meted out punishments, and forwarded monthly reports to the governors. Jamaica was the largest and most valuable of the British West Indian possessions and consequently the focus of attention. There were four groups all with a vested interest in the outcome of the apprenticeship experiment: the British government, the Jamaican Assembly, the planters, and the apprentices. The thesis of this work is that rather than ameliorating conditions and gaining the cooperation they needed from their workers, the planters responded with coercive acts that drove the labor force from the plantations. The planters’ actions, along with those of a British government loathe to interfere with local legislatures after the experience of losing the North American colonies, bear much of the responsibility for the demise of the plantation economy in Jamaica.

The section on information sources is written by Mr E. Roberts. In January 2013 the Bible League Quarterly and the Sword and Trowel published an article by R. E. Palgrave regarding the abandonment of Biblical separation from error by Wales Evangelical School of Theology (WEST). In summary, this article outlined the following: WEST has appointed as its Chancellor a man who has had a 20-year close relationship with Rick Warren and who has signed his ecumenical P.E.A.C.E Plan promoting work with Muslims, Roman Catholics and all faiths. WEST has appointed as its Chairman a man who has translated Rick Warren’s teachings into Korean and is himself teaching Rick Warren’s message of easy believism. WEST has made alliances with Porterbrook and Acts 29 Network. The latter was founded by Mark Driscoll who promotes immoral and licentious behaviour and is part of the Emerging Church. WEST now offers Porterbrook courses which teach Emerging Church and New Calvinist philosophies. In the Preface to their republished essay, Mintz and Price (1992:viii-ix) outline this de- bate in terms of reactions to their first edition, which advanced a linguistic model of underlying African "grammatical" principles and a dynamic process of Caribbean culture-building to replace the more static approach of African cultural survivals advanced by M.J. Herskovits (e.g. 1937, 1941; Herskovits & Herskovits 1947): The argument aimed to build on the insights of Herskovits and his peers. But it was greeted in some quarters by a - for us - surprising hostility, accompanied by the charge that it denied the existence of an African heritage in the Americas. It seemed that many such reactions originated in a desire to polarize Afro-Americanist scholarship into a flatly "for" or "against" position in regard to African cultural retentions.
