Where Literature Fills the Gaps: The Book of Negroes as a Canadian Work of Rememory Christine Duff awrence Hill’s the Book of negroeS1 takes its title from a late eighteenth-century document listing some 3,000 Black Loyalists given passage to Nova Scotia following the American LWar of Independence. Prior to Hill’s widely read novel, few Canadians were aware of the document’s existence, much less the reasons for this displacement of people and their treatment following their arrival. Through the voice of Hill’s protagonist, Aminata Diallo, the fictional scribe who creates the register “The Book of Negroes,” these historical facts are rememoried2 and rewoven into the fabric of the Canadian historical record. George Elliott Clarke explains the importance of these exercises of remembering and rememorying in his introduction to the anthology Eyeing the North Star: Directions in African-Canadian Literature: “Because African-Canadian history is ignored in Canada, African-Canadian writers are forced to act as historians” (xx).3 The need for this work of recollection and rememory in the Canadian context is an urgent one, as Canada is too often absent from discussions of post- slavery New World societies. Slavery fiction in the United States, for example, has been an object of study since its beginnings in the 1960s.4 In evoking the Black Loyalist experience in Nova Scotia, Hill brings parts of Canada’s past out of the shadows, filling the gaps in the history books alluded to by Clarke. In this sense, the novel is part of a wider movement in contemporary Canadian historical fiction, as described by Herb Wyile in Speculative Fictions: Contemporary Canadian Novels and the Writing of History, in that it draws our attention to a historically marginalized population and is marked by a clear preoccupation with the historiography itself. -

George Liele :Negro Slavery's Prophet of Deliverance EORGE LIELE (Lisle, Sharpe) is o:p.e of the unsung heroes of Greligious history, whose exploits and attainments have gone vir tually unnoticed except in a few little-known books and journals of Negro history. Liele's spectacular but steady devotion to the cause of his Master began with his conversion in 1773 and subsequent exercise of his ·cc call" in his own and nearby churches; it ended with mUltiple thousands of simple black folk raisec;I from the callous indignity of human bondage to freedom and a glorious citizenship in the king dom of God, largely as a consequence of this man's Christian witness in life and word. George was born a slave to slave parents, Liele and Nancy, in servitude to the family of Henry Sharpe in Virginia. From his birth, about 1750, to his eventual freedom in 1773, Liele belonged to the Sharpe family, with whom' he was removed to Burke County, Georgia, prior to 1770. Henry Sharpe, his master, was a Loyalist supporter and a deacon in the Buckhead Creek Baptist Church pastored by the Rev. Matthew Moore. Of his own parents and early years Liele reported in a letter of 1791 written from. Kingston, Jamaica: ~'I was born in Virginia, my father's name was Liele, and my mother's name Nancy; I cannot ascertain much of them, as I went to several parts of America when young, and at length resided in New Georgia; but was informed both by white and black people, that my father was the only black person who knew the Lord in a spiritual way in that country. -

Black Methodists in Nineteenth-Century Nova Scotia1
Towards Community: Black Methodists in Nineteenth-Century Nova Scotia1 ALLEN P. STOUFFER Works on African Canadian and Canadian Methodist history are virtually silent on black Methodism. This is surprising for black Methodists have been a continuing part of the provinces’ institutional religious life. In the Maritime provinces they participated in the post-revolutionary Loyalist migration to Nova Scotia and maintained a provincial presence throughout the nineteenth century. This paper examines black Nova Scotian Method- ism to the mid-nineteenth century as an aspect of black associational activity in nineteenth-century British North America.2 Methodists were among the 3,500 black Loyalists who came to Nova Scotia at the close of the Revolutionary War. They were most numerous on the province’s south shore around Shelburne where blacks settled in considerable numbers. Their principal leader was Moses Wilkinson, a blind and lame former slave from Virginia, who arrived in Shelburne on board the L’Abondance in August 1783 with 409 other blacks. Already evidently an avid Methodist, Wilkinson immediately began preaching in Birchtown, an adjacent black settlement. He was an effective exhorter for a religious awakening occurred among black immigrants there in the winter of 1783-1784. When William Black, the province’s future Methodist leader, visited Shelburne in the spring of 1784, he reported preaching to 200 blacks at Birchtown, sixty of whom were Wilkinson converts.3 Wilkinson’s first convert was Violet King, the wife of Boston King, a former slave from a plantation near Charleston, South Carolina. Violet, a North Carolina fugitive, and Boston met and were married in New York Historical Papers 2000: Canadian Society of Church History 196 Black Methodists in Nineteenth-Century Nova Scotia late in the war. -

Missing Pieces of the Puzzle: African Americans in Revolutionary Times “Tell them that if I am Black I am free born American & a revolutionary soldier & therefore ought not to be thrown entirely out of the scale of notice.” -John Chavis to Willie P. Mangum, March 10, 1832 Overview In a puzzle, each piece counts. Yet often when studying the Revolutionary War, we forget to acknowledge the important roles Africans and African Americans played, whether in fighting for either side of the war, or fighting for their own rights to freedom. Without including their pieces of the puzzle, the history we learn is incomplete. In this lesson, students will learn how Blacks were contributing to colonial society, making active choices to survive their bondage and striving to shape and control their own lives amidst the Patriots’ struggle for political freedom. By participating in an in depth class discussion centering around a Power Point presentation, students will explore the roles of Blacks during the Revolutionary War, gaining an understanding of the contradiction of a nation seeking independence while simultaneously denying freedom to those enslaved. Students will share their new understanding by creating an artistic bulletin board-sized puzzle (“Every Piece Counts”) focused on the roles African Americans played during the Revolutionary War. But none- theless it is an important topic to tackle. As important as any part of such an endeavour is deciding on a “plan of attack” in getting into the topic. The movement covered by this label “Calvinism” has spread out its tentacles all over the place and in many different, sometimes in conflicting directions. The logical starting place is with the person whose name has been attached to the label, although I’m quite sure he would be most uncomfortable with most of the content bearing his name.2 After exploring the history of John Calvin, we will take a look at a few of the more influential interpreters of Calvin over the subsequent centuries into the present day. This will open the door to attempt to explain the ideology of Calvinism with some of the distinctive terms and concepts associated exclusively with it. I. Book Review: the Book of Negroes
The Book of Negroes Lawrence Hill Harper Collins Publishers Inc., Toronto, 2007 ________________________________________________________________________ When I first heard of Lawrence Hill’s The Book of Negroes, I thought that it was a republishing of the list of Africans leaving New York City at the close of the American Revolution. I later learned that it was actually a novel and a novel that has won the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize as the Best Book of 2008. The story, in a word, is breathtaking. The book spans the life of an African woman. “I am Aminata Diallo, daughter of Mamadu Diallo and Sira Kulibali, born in the village of Bayo, three moons by foot from the Grain Coast in West Africa. I am a Bamana. And a Fula. I am both. ... I suspect that I was born in 1745, or close to it. And I am writing this account. All of it.” (p. 4) Her life is vividly portrayed from her beginnings in sub- Sarahan Africa, through her enslavement in the Gullah speaking islands of the Carolinas, to her search for a passage back home by way of New York City, Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone, and on to her time in England when her “hair has mostly fallen out now, and the remaining strands are grey, still curled, tight to my head, and I don’t fuss with them.” (p. 5) Lawrence Hill’s research is impeccable and he makes the characters convincingly real. What amazes me most about the writing is the incredible attention to detail paid to the everyday items and events portrayed throughout the novel.
