I. The Irish Franciscan college of St. Anthony at Louvain was granted a bull of foundation by Pope Paul V on 3 April 1607. This small house in what is now Leuven, Belgium, became one of the most intense centres of Irish engagement with Europe. Its history, both that of the friars who inhabited the college itself and that of the soldiers, diplomats and merchants who supported it, is also the story of Ireland’s decisive step into Europe. St. Anthony’s College owed both its foundation and location to Florence Conry a Franciscan friar and future archbishop of Tuam. Conry, a native of the townland of Figh part of the civil parish of Tibohine, barony of Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon, belonged to the learned family of the Uí Mhaoil Chonaire and had been trained in seanchas or traditional learning before leaving to study in Salamanca. He later entered the Franciscan order and, apart from a short return to Ireland as ‘confessor, adviser and favourite’ of Red Hugh O’Donnell just before the battle of Kinsale in 1601, spent his life in the Spanish dominions. The combination of Gaelic sensibility, Spanish courtiership, political astuteness and Latinate scholarship found in Conry helps explain the choice of Louvain as a novitiate-in-exile and house of studies for the Irish Franciscans. Founded in 1425, Louvain’s medieval university had developed into one of the intellectual powerhouses of Europe. Given its short distance from the border with the Protestant Netherlands the university had become one of the key centres of counter-reformation thought which, when combined with its proximity to the vast printing presses of Antwerp made it an ideal training ground for priests for the Irish mission. -

Bollandists | 1 BOLLANDISTS A society of Jesuit fathers named after John van Bolland (1596-1665), who founded it on the basis of a plan conceived by Heribert Rosweyde (1569-1629), who did not live to see it materialize. The plan called for the assembling and publication of a universal register of the lives of saints from all possible original sources. The outcome of the labors of successive generations of Bollandists was publication of a multivolume work entitled ACTA SANCTORUM (still in progress). The work of the Bollandists was suspended in 1773, when the Society of Jesus was suppressed in Belgium. Their activities were resumed in 1837, when further supplements to the Acta sanctorum were published in the Analecta Bollandiana, a quarterly review devoted to hagiography and the lives of saints. It consists mainly of unpublished source material. The Bollandists’ work is arranged according to the saints’ days, and at present they have reached November. H. Delehaye is one of the society’s most eminent editors. He is credited with sections entitled Martyr et confesseur (Analecta Bollandiana 39 [1921]), Le calendrier d’Oxyrhynque pour l’année 535-36(Analecta Bollandiana 48 [1924]), Les martyrs d’Egypte (Analecta Bollandiana 40 [1922]; also republished separately [Brussels, 1923]),La personalité historique de St. Paul de Thèbes (Analecta Bollandiana 44 [1926]), and Une vie inédite de St. Jean l’aumonier (Analecta Bollandiana 46 [1927]). FOUR THE MISSION CENTURIES TODAY OF Saints are inspirational, even when they seem to belong more to the realm of folklore or imagination. For two thousand years, RESEARCH aside from being the leading force of renewal in Christianity, they have been influencing our world, our culture and our thinking in ways few people realise. Así nacieron las “Acta Sanctorum”, cuya edición prosiguió hasta 1940 de la mano de los colaboradores y sucesores de Bolland: los Bolandistas. Pero, en 1691, la Orden de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo denunció la publicación y a sus autores ante la Inquisición, motivando su condena en todos los territorios donde el Santo Oficio hispano ejercía su influencia. El presente artículo pretende ahondar en el desarrollo del conflicto que, ante la en ocasiones pasiva mirada del Santo Oficio y con el contenido de las “Acta Sanctorum” como excusa, enfrentó a jesuitas y carmelitas entre los años 1691 y 1715. Introduction Samantha Kahn Herrick Every medieval saint’s cult required a set of narratives, for every saint was de- fined by the story that revealed his or her sanctity. Such narratives were often transmitted as Latin texts, although they could be written in the vernacular or composed and preserved orally— and indeed many stories about saints cir- culated in some combination of these forms. Those still accessible to scholars are primarily the written works on which this book focuses. The fundamental text related the saint’s story as his or her devotees wished to tell it— his or her life (vita), if the saint died peacefully, or passion (passio), if he or she was martyred. Miracle collections recorded and publicized the wonders that were said to have occurred at the saint’s tomb (and elsewhere). Inventions (inven- tiones) reported the discovery of relics; translations (translationes) their ritual transfer and installation— these are the most common of the many different sorts of texts produced in the Latin Middle Ages, in their thousands, to pro- mote and celebrate the sanctity and wondrous deeds of myriad holy women and men. These are the sorts of documents most often meant by the term hagiography. The modern study of such texts owes much to the work of pre- modern scholars. Protestant reformers such as Martin Luther criticized Catholic vener- ation of saints. Among other things, they alleged that the stories told about in- dividual saints were often untrue.1 In response to such charges, the Jesuit Jean Bolland (d. 1665) began the critical examination of saints honored in the Ro- man calendar.2 He aimed to weed both baseless narratives and dubious cults by means of the latest analytical tools. -

Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Tim Carter, chair Annegret Fauser Anne MacNeil John Nádas Jocelyn Neal © 2009 Virginia Christy Lamothe ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract Virginia Christy Lamothe: “The Theater of Piety: Sacred Operas for the Barberini Family (Rome, 1632-1643)” (Under the direction of Tim Carter) In a time of religious war, plague, and reformation, Pope Urban VIII and his cardinal- nephews Antonio and Francesco Barberini sought to establish the authority of the Catholic Church by inspiring audiences of Rome with visions of the heroic deeds of saints. One way in which they did this was by commissioning operas based on the lives of saints from the poet Giulio Rospigliosi (later Pope Clement IX), and papal musicians Stefano Landi and Virgilio Mazzocchi. Aside from the merit of providing an in-depth look at four of these little-known works, Sant’Alessio (1632, 1634), Santi Didimo e Teodora (1635), San Bonifatio (1638), and Sant’Eustachio (1643), this dissertation also discusses how these operas reveal changing ideas of faith, civic pride, death and salvation, education, and the role of women during the first half of the seventeenth century. The analysis of the music and the drama stems from studies of the surviving manuscript scores, libretti, payment records and letters about the first performances. -

The Ambiguities of the Holy: Authenticating Relics in Seventeenth-Century Spain* by K ATRINA O LDS Recent scholarship has shown that, even at the heart of the Catholic world, defining holiness in the Counter-Reformation was remarkably difficult, in spite of ongoing Roman reforms meant to centralize and standardize the authentication of saints and relics. If the standards for evaluating sanctity were complex and contested in Rome, they were even less clear to regional actors, such as the Bishop of Jae´n, who supervised the discovery of relics in Arjona, a southern Spanish town, beginning in 1628. The new relics presented the bishop, Cardinal Baltasar de Moscoso y Sandoval, with knotty historical, theological, and procedural dilemmas. -
