    FL History 1539-1542 Early 1800s Hernando de Soto Arrives and Explores Florida Hernando de Soto was given the title Route of de Soto through Florida. Governor of Cuba by the king of Spain, Carlos V, in 1536. He was also given “La IVER Florida,” the area previously given to Pánfilo CILLA R AU ER RIV de Narváez. TA FE SAN R E V I R E E N A W De Soto chose to use Cuba as a home base for his S W supplies and for planning his expeditions. He spent his fortune recruiting, I T H L O C O arming, and transporting his own army. When he left Spain in 1538, he O C H E E R I was heavily in debt. He believed, however, that he would regain his fortune V E R by finding gold in “La Florida.” ALIFIA RIVER The Expedition to La Florida De Soto sent guides ahead to locate and chart a course for his army. The expedition set sail for Florida on the 18th of May 1539, with five large vessels and four smaller ones. On these vessels were de Soto’s army as well as priests, women, horses, mules, war dogs, and pigs. On May 25th, they made landfall in the Tampa Bay area. De Soto’s expedition initially landed at Piney Point. They made camp at Uzita, which was a native village on the northern shore of the Little Manatee River. Amazingly, a cavalry patrol found a Spanish survivor from an earlier expedition. He had been searching for gold along with Narváez eleven years earlier.

Santiago, Chile - January 25. This morning representatives from 20 institutions representing the public, private and civil society sectors got together and publicly committed to work in the protection of the resources that supply water to the Metropolitan Region of Santiago which will result in the creation of a Water Fund for this specific region. The Metropolitan Region of Santiago supplies water to a third of the Chilean population, also provides water for agricultural work, hydroelectric production, mining and the wine industry. However, there are several problems such as unsustainable livestock practices close to water sources, and the effects of climate change that significantly affect the region's water security. Under this panorama, the creation of a Water Fund for the Metropolitan Region of Santiago becomes essential. The Water Funds are an innovative and effective model already implemented in several cities in Latin America, which design and enhance financial and governance mechanisms that unite public, private and civil society stakeholders, around a common goal to contribute to water security through nature-based solutions.

    Hernando de Soto Reading Comprehension Name_______________________ Early Life Hernando de Soto was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain, sometime around the year 1500. He was born to parents who lived in Extremadura, an area of great hardship and poverty. Like many young men at the time, de Soto longed to escape Extremadura and achieve military fame exploring new lands. Glory and Conquest In 1514, de Soto sailed with the Spanish governor of Panama, where he assisted in the conquest of Central America. From an early age, de Soto gained a reputation for bravery, intellect, and brutality. In 1528, de Soto became regidor of Guatemala and sailed from there to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, hoping to find a passage from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean that would enable Spanish trade with the East Indies. The expedition ultimately failed, and de Soto joined Francisco Pizarro and his conquest of South America. Because de Soto had a major part in the conquest of the Incan Empire, he became fabulously wealthy upon his return to Spain. De Soto was made governor of Cuba and was expected to colonize the mainland of North America. He chose 620 men for the voyage from Cuba to the interior of North America. De Soto hoped to find the passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Into the Southeast in Search of Gold In May of 1539, de Soto, 620 men, and 220 horses landed at Charlotte Harbor, Florida. He named it Espíritu Santo after the Holy Spirit. The expedition then traveled north through the peninsula of Florida where they endured native ambushes along the way.

We describe a new species of fragrant Vanilla from the Chocó biogeographic region of Western Colombia, named Vanilla rivasii sp. nov. in honor of the local farmer who drew it to our attention. This species is related to the Vanilla hostmannii group, also containing V. dressleri, V. ruiziana and V. cribbiana, with which it shares flower traits such as the showy, yellowish flower with thickened longitudinal venation in the lip apex. Vanilla rivasii is characterised by possessing: a long racemose inflorescence up to 60 cm in length, carrying up to 150 yellow flowers, with two to four open simultaneously; a trilobed labellum with a conspicuously bi-lobulated central lobe; and basally fused lateral sepals. Vanilla rivasii can be distinguished from the most morphologically-similar species, V. cribbiana and V. hostmannii, by the number of veins in the cushion-like structure of the lip and the larger size and higher number of flowers per inflorescence. This discovery highlights northern South America as a centre of diversity for this economically-important genus, and underlines the need for further botanical exploration in the highly biodiverse region of the Chocó.
