    Melanesian Journal of Theology 13-2 (1997) CHRISTIAN LIFE AND THE LIVING DEAD Russell Thorp Russell Thorp is a New Zealander, who was born in Papua New Guinea. He holds a Bachelor of Ministries from the Bible College of New Zealand. He is currently teaching at the Christian Leaders’ Training College. The following article was written as part of a Master’s degree program. Question: Can primal funeral rites be used in some way to convey a Christian message? To explore this issue we will compare the funeral rites of a Papuan cultural group with those of an African group.1 I will first summarise the African funeral ceremony, as Don Brown relates it in his article. Then I will describe and analyse the funeral ritual of the “Dugum Dani”,2 a Papuan culture in the Highlands of Western Papua New Guinea.3 Once we have a picture of both rituals, we will then use the work of Arnold Van Gennep4 and Ronald Grimes5 to analyse the Dugum Dani ritual.     5 The social ecology of artisanal mining: Between romanticisation and anathema Saleem H. Ali Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) has existed for millennia, and is ingrained in many cultural traditions. However, as this book’s first four chapters have demonstrated, the activity has often faced challenges of acceptance by mainstream institutions because it occupies an interstitial space ‘between the pick and the plough’. It is at once an extractive sector but is also practised as a seasonal activity of agrarian peasants. It may not have all the hallmarks of a formal enterprise, but it is also seldom anarchic plundering of a resource. Thus, in this chapter, I attempt to negotiate through these seemingly conflicting elements of ASM by offering a synthetic conceptual anchor for the preceding chapters. I am guided in this task by an acute recognition that environmental concerns about ASM would need to be addressed in any effective framing of its social development imperative. Development donors have considered ASM as suitable for technical interventions to improve yield of minerals or alternative techniques for safer extraction. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Swiss Development Agency’s efforts to focus on the use of mercury in ASM gold-mining are examples of such undertakings. Mercury reduction efforts have been spurred by the advent of the Minamata Convention on Mercury Reduction that has thus far been signed by over 128 countries, and ratified by 88 (as of January 2018).2 The Convention recognises that mercury usage in artisanal and small-scale mining will likely be a challenge for many more years to come, given the remote locations of the mining sites and the relatively low cost of mercury worldwide.

    Socialist television drama, newspaper critics and the battle of ideas during the crisis of Britain’s post-war settlement Author: Steven Fielding Journal: Twentieth Century British History Accepted for Publication: 1 February 2019 More than ever, ideas matter to political historians: many have now taken an ‘ideational turn’.1 This is especially true of students of the 1970s, the decade when a fierce ideological battle with huge consequences for the future raged over Britain’s ailing post-war settlement. By keeping the profit motive intact and leaving untouched most bastions of estaBlished power, but expanding the role of government and giving organized laBour a Bigger voice, some believed the settlement had permanently placed Britain somewhere Between socialism and the free market.2 Sustained by what Paul Addison described as a limited ‘Whitehall consensus’, the settlement nonetheless remained the suBject of keen ideological debate.3 Economic growth and popular affluence however meant that those who wanted to firmly wrest it towards socialism or the free market were largely excluded from influence within government. VICTORIOUS FESTIVAL OVERVIEW Victorious Festival is set for its seventh August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival, located along Southsea’s beautiful seafront, will kick off with a partially open site on Friday 23rd August (Common Stage, World Music Village, Street Food Way & Premium Upgrade Area ONLY) to get everyone warmed up ready for the full affair on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August 2019. The festival has multiple stages offering a wide variety of music, including two main stages playing host to the biggest performers – last year saw The Prodigy, Paul Weller, Kaiser Chiefs, Years & Years and Paloma Faith headlining. As well as many more acts across the weekend! Victorious Festival is steadily growing each year, the extensive festival site boasts a huge Kids Arena where all activities and entertainment are free, an array of market and food stalls, as well as free entry to some of the amazing Southsea Seafront attractions within the site. With all of this on offer to ticket holders, the event continues to be one of the best value music festivals in the UK! The festival also offers festival-goers the opportunity to camp offsite at Farlington Playing Fields with a free-to-campers shuttle bus service to and from the festival site.

    The Direction of Ecological Insurrections: Political Ecology Comes to Daggers with Fukuoka

    The direction of ecological insurrections: political ecology comes to daggers with Fukuoka Alexander Dunlap1 University of Oslo, Norway Abstract This article proposes a political ecology of resistance. This is done by putting forward insurrectionary political ecology as a lens of research and struggle, through the confluence of the complementary "political" practice of insurrectionary anarchism and the "ecological" method of "no-till natural farming." While seemingly different, the article argues that these practices are compatible, animating a political ecology of resistance around anti- authoritarian political and ecological lifeways. This direction, or compass, of insurrectionary political ecology is discussed in relation to other autonomous tendencies, as it complements and strengthens existing critical schools of thought heavily influenced by political ecology, such as (decolonial) degrowth, environmental justice and post-development. Insurrectionary political ecology deepens connections with scholarly rebels in political and ecological struggles outside—and rejecting—the university system. The article includes discussions of research ethics, various conceptions of "activism", autonomous tendencies and existing differences between the concepts of "revolution" and "insurrection", in order to debate notions of "counter-hegemony" and "duel- power." The overall purpose here is to offer a theoretical ethos for a political ecology of resistance that invigorates political praxis to subvert the ongoing socio-ecological catastrophes.
