  • Colonization and the Church in High Medieval Sardinia
Colonization and the Church in High Medieval Sardinia by Ann Wesson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto © Copyright 2015 by Ann Wesson Colonization and the Church in High Medieval Sardinia Ann Wesson Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This thesis investigates the role that the Church played in the political, spiritual and economic colonization of Sardinia in the high Middle Ages. By using Robert Bartlett’s conception of the European “center” and “periphery,” it shows that Sardinia represents an unusual case of a territory that was culturally both central and peripheral. Within this ambiguous cultural setting, and using papal letters, political treaties, chronicles, monastic documents, and onomastic evidence, the thesis examines the way Pisa, Genoa and the Roman pontiffs used Rome’s spiritual and cultural authority to strengthen their own political and economic claims in Sardinia. Specifically, by focusing on the archbishop of Pisa and the bishops and archbishops of Sardinia, it shows that the personnel of the Church, which are not commonly considered agents of colonization in Sardinia, were in reality fundamental to bringing Sardinian society closer to being a political and cultural extension of the Italian mainland. It also, however, investigates the ways in which local Sardinian rulers at times strongly resisted ecclesiastical pressures to conform to the norms of Rome, or used the spiritual prestige and cultural tools offered by the Roman Church to negotiate political advantages for themselves. In this way, the thesis finds that foreign cultural colonization in Sardinia was at times less effective than is generally assumed, and that in certain situations the personnel of the Sardinian Church could offer the means for resistance to foreign colonization.

  • Early Modern Provincial Identity in the Border Area Between the Venetian Republic and the Hereditary Lands of the Austrian Branch of the House of Habsburg
Early Modern Provincial Identity in the Border Area... NEVA MAKUC Zgodovinski inštitut Milka Kosa ZRC SAZU Nova Gorica, Slovenija Izvorni znanstveni članak UDK: 94(450.36)“16“(091) Early Modern Provincial Identity in the Border Area between the Venetian Republic and the Hereditary Lands of the Austrian Branch of the House of Habsburg This article focuses on some problematics regarding the early modern provincial identity in the area along the border between the Venetian Republic and the hereditary lands of the Austrian branch of the House of Habsburg. The Friulian provincial identity is studied in the context of the internal conflicts in the Fri- ulian society and the conflict between the Venetian Republic and the House of Habsburg (for example anti-Venetian sentiment of the Friulian feudal nobility, which was expressed mostly in indirect ways, but the most revealing are private historiographical documents). Keywords: Venetian Republic, House of Habsburg, provincial identity, early modern period, Friuli, County of Gorizia In the early modern period, the area along the border1 between the Venetian Repub- lic and the hereditary lands of the Austrian branch of the House of Habsburg, was marked by a specific historical development in which the idiosyncrasies of the Mediter- ranean intertwined with those of the continental world and in which the elements of the Italian, Slavic and German cultures blended together. The Habsburg-Venetian bor- der influenced the everyday life of the local inhabitants. Border areas are characterized by encounters, exchanges and contaminations with cultural differences, specific rituals of the authorities and illegal practices.2 In these often marginal areas (understood in their geographical as well as in social, cultural, economic, linguistic, etc.

Uncovering The Sources: Historical Characters In Dante's Divine Comedy Abstract A lack of citation of Dante’s specific source material for historical characters who appear in the Divine Comedy is widespread throughout the commentary tradition. I performed a close textual analysis of the Divine Comedy’s historical characters, comparing them with the chronicles, annals and histories of Dante’s time, using both archival research and secondary histories to do so, and interpreted those primary historical texts as potential sources consulted by Dante. The historical characters I focused on fell into three categories: 1) characters involved in the battles of Montaperti and Colle Val d’Elsa, 2) characters belonging to or associated with the Norman, Swabian and Aragonese dynasties of Sicily, 3) characters embroiled in sensational or newsworthy events during Dante’s lifetime. The first two categories analyzed historical events that mostly occurred before Dante was born, and thus focused more heavily on written testimony, while the third category analyzed the news of Dante’s adulthood, and thus focused more on oral tradition.

Flaten, Coastal Carolina University Chair: Charles Rosenberg, University of Notre Dame Presenter: Stephen K. Scher, Independent Scholar Paper Title: Reggio Emilia, Milan, and the Mannerist Medal in Italy Abstract: In the entire history of medallic art there is little that can compare with the curious and fantastic group of medals centered upon Reggio Emilia in the sixteenth century. With an oblique reference to Leone Leoni’s medal of Ippolita Gonzaga and the similar piece by Jacopo da Trezzo, the Emilian medallists, whose work is usually uniface and cast in a lead alloy, produced a series of portraits of great originality. Both male and female subjects are clothed in agitated, filmy garments, and, in the case of the latter, with richly coiffed hair as if they were participating in some elaborate court masque. Often they are presented on pedestals following the form of ancient busts, with arms cut off just below the shoulder. This paper will attempt to discover the sources of such fascinating imagery as an element of Italian Mannerist art, and explain its presence in the medallic context. Presenter: Raymond B. Waddington, University of California, Davis Paper Title: Breaking News: Representing the Other on Portrait Medals Abstract: One purpose of the portrait medal has always been to make accessible the faces of famous people, whether from the past or in the present. During an age of exploration and increasing crosscultural encounters, a particular and neglected function was the representation of foreigners.

High Street, Bloomsbury, W.C. 1904 ^'^^, . 41//37 PREFACE The sad death of Mr. Harbottle, just as this work was going to press, has thrown upon me the onus of correcting the proofs and preparing the Index. The necessity for hurrying the work through the press has precluded com- parison of the references in every instance with the original sources from which the Author had taken them ; if there- fore some few printer's errors or varieties of speUing may still remain, they may, I hope, be attributed to the im- perfections of one, who had to step suddenly into the breach caused by the loss of a valued friend and collabora- tor, whose patience in research, depth of knowledge and accuracy in compilation, he could never hope to equal.
