MS Maud is here, ready and waiting to bring you north to Norway´s magical landscapes on the hunt for one of nature’s greatest spectacles: The Northern Lights. Once on board the ship, you’ll pick up your complimentary expedition jacket, settle into your cabin, explore the ship and attend a mandatory safety drill. After the first of many sumptuous dinners and a welcome toast by the Captain, you’ll meet your expert Expedition Team. They are your knowledgeable lecturers, warm hosts, and good-natured guides throughout your journey. Many grew up and live in the places you’ll be visiting and are passionate about sharing their home with you. First and foremost though, they are there to keep you safe and well. They’ll be making it a priority to run through important health and safety aspects with you and your fellow guests. When the ship sets sail, we’ll pass the white cliffs of Dover and head up to the North Sea. Stretch your sea legs and get to know MS Maud, your cosy home away from home. If the weather holds, take in the salubrious sea air from out on deck or park yourself in the Explorer Lounge and Bar to watch the world go by from the panoramic windows, maybe together with a relaxing glass of wine. You’ll definitely want to start enjoying onboard facilities like the hot tubs, sauna, and indoor gym. But you’ll likely also be striking up a camaraderie with the Expedition Team as well as other crew members and guests. The Expedition Team will begin the first in their series of insightful lectures over at the Science Center. Each member of the Expedition Team are experts on different subjects and you’ll find them to be walking, talking treasure troves of stories and information. They’ll share their extensive knowledge about the places, history, nature, people and natural phenomena we are likely to encounter during this winter cruise along the Norwegian coast. Today’s topics might include the geology of the North Sea, the science behind the Northern Lights, or the history of Hurtigruten as a national icon of Norway. Even as no one can completely predict the weather, wind and waves on the North Sea are known to be a bit choppy at this time of year. Our Captain’s goal is to bring us into Bergen the next day, but where nature is involved, nothing can be completely set in stone. This is just part and parcel of the expedition experience, adding extra suspense and excitement to your adventure. Rest assured that we’ll be doing our best to make your cruise as safe and as smooth as possible, even if it means being flexible and adapting our plans to factor in the elements. We’ll leave the North Sea and enter scenic straits and fjords on our way to the Hanseatic city of Bergen. Call 1 888 356 2021 Email [email protected] www.inspiringvacations.com P1 TOUR ITINERARY Depending on the weather when crossing the North Sea, we aim to arrive in Bergen in the afternoon. As our first port of call in Norway, and one of the country’s most picturesque cities, Bergen won’t disappoint. Founded in 1070 AD, Bergen was Norway’s capital for many years and you’ll see that the city has retained a great deal of its local character, heritage and charm. Your included activity in Bergen is an excursion to Mount Fløyen. We’ll hop on Hurtigruten buses from where the ship docks and drive to the Fløibanen funicular. The ride to the top of the mountain takes just six minutes. At the summit, 320 metres high, bask in stunning views over the city surrounded by seven mountains and the sea. If there’s time, we might also have an opportunity to venture into the alpine forest here for a short hike. Once back in the centre of Bergen, spend some time wandering the cobblestone streets and alleyways of this thriving, compact city. Be sure to stroll through the historic UNESCO-listed Bryggen district with its colourful wooden wharfs. The area dates back to the 14th century and now houses boutique stores selling a range of Norwegian arts and crafts. Across from Bryggen is Bergen’s famous fish market which is full of sights, sounds and scents to savour. DAY 4 Destination Nordfjord & Leon Meals included Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Cruise MS Maud, Polar Outside Cabin, or similar We start the day with some scenic cruising into Nordfjord, passing Hornelen, Europe’s highest sea cliff, early in the morning. The fjord run offs from Jostedalsbreen, Europe's largest mainland glacier, and flows west into the ocean just south of the Stadlandet peninsula. Thanks to the smaller size of our expedition ship, we’ll be taking you through straits and channels that larger vessels simply can’t fit through. This allows you to get that much closer to the fjords and mountains that the Norwegian coast is so famous for. It also means we can access small communities that few ever get to visit, giving you an intimate glimpse into the culture and way of life here. It would make sense if lectures for today focus on the geology of Norway, covering the formation of its fjords, mountains and glaciers. You might also learn more about the Viking culture that used to inhabit the region and their thirst for exploration that still beats in the hearts of Norwegians today. You’ll spot numerous old fishing communities located along the fjord that actually date back to pre-Viking times. One such place is Loen, where we arrive around noon. In the shadow of the mighty Jostedalsbreen glacier, at the very heart of Nordfjord, Loen is the perfect place to explore the gorgeous surrounds. We use our small boats to land at a floating jetty which is conveniently also a starting point for the Loen Skylift. The cable car climbs 1,011 metre to the top of Mount Hoven in only five minutes. At the summit, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable vista over the fjord. Mount Skåla and Lake Lo can be seen to the east, and Jostedalsbreen Glacier and Olden to the south. With these panoramas all around you, you can participate in several optional winter activities on the mountain, such as snowshoeing or sledding. If time and weather allow, there might also be an opportunity to do some thrilling winter kayaking on the fjord. You’ll likely be amazed at Torghatten mountain too, with its distinct hole right through the middle. Local legend states that the mountain was in fact the troll-king’s hat which turned to stone when it was pierced through by an arrow. At this point of your expedition, we are around the halfway mark along Norway’s long coastline and you won’t be far off from the Arctic Circle. This is an exciting time as the further north we sail, the greater your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. The natural phenomenon occurs when charged particles carried by the solar wind disturb the Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating mesmerising ripples and rays. The end result is a cosmic lightshow of dazzling colour and dance. Our route along the Norwegian coast will take us directly under the Auroral Zone, a prime area of Northern Lights occurrences. We’ll be hoping to see multiple sightings of the lights in different locations.

The Lillevik dyke complex occurs in an allochthonous unit and shows field relationships indicative of a transition from the mafic cumulate to the sheeted dyke zone in a segment of an ophiolite. Major and trace element chemistry confirm the MORB character of most of the diabases. Certain diabase, gabbro and trondhjemite dykes have REE patterns suggesting a later stage of ocean-island volcanism. The Lillevik complex and equivalent bodies along strike on the eastern limb of the Ofoten synform are a probable source for the mafic facies of the overlying Elvenes Conglomerate. This was due to the very good harbour and its ice-free con- ditions. At the outbreak of World War II, Narvik was a strategically important harbour, and during the first few days of the war a very intense battle was fought out here between German, Norwegian and British naval forces. During this fighting several ships were sunk, both warships and civil merchant ships. Narvik harbour was transformed into a great ship ceme- tery, with wrecks sticking up out of the water every- where. Several of the ships were later salvaged, but many wrecks still remained. With its high density of wrecks, Narvik is an eldorado for wreck divers. M. : Kyanite-grade metamorphism in the Evenes and Bogen Groups, Ofoten, North Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 64, pp. 21-26. Oslo 1984. ISSN 0029-196X. Directly north of Ofotfjorden in northern Norway, pelitic schists within the Evenes and Bogen Groups contain the mineral assemblage garnet + biotite ± kyanite ± staurolite + white mica + quartz ± plagio­ clase. This assemblage implies metamorphic P-T minima of- 540"C and - 4. 8 kb. The rocks are thus at a higher grade than suggested by previous reports, which placed them in the greenschist facies. This indicates that several metamorphic allochthons in Ofoten, including rocks of the Narvik, Evenes, Bogen, and Niingen Groups, are all at kyanite grade, supporting recent interpretations which on structural grounds concluded that the metamorphic peak outlasted stacking of these allochthons. A proposed correlation of the Evenes Group with the Middle Ordovician-Lower Silurian Balsfjord Supergroup implies that this stacking and associated kyanite-grade metamorphism are post-early Silurian and are related to the Scandian phase of the Caledonian orogeny.     Faculty of Science and Technology Department of Geology Geochemical investigations of northern Norwegian fjord sediments – Sources and spatial variability of marine and terrigenous components — Lea Philine Canzler Master thesis in Marine Geology and Geophysics (GEO-3900) May 2016 Abstract Fjords represent unique coastal marine environments with high sedimentation rates. They can be used for intensive investigations focusing on geochemical, mineralogical, biological, and sedimentological processes. In this study I investigate 42 surface sediment samples from the outer and inner parts of the Vestfjord, Ofotfjord, Tysfjord and tributary fjord arms in northern Norway. Samples were analysed for their bulk elemental composition, grain size distribution, and total carbon and nitrogen contents (Ctot, Ntot). Furthermore, total organic and inorganic carbon and nitrogen concentrations (Corg, Cinorg, Norg and Ninorg) as well as the carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) were analysed. The measurements were performed to identify geochemical proxies for the contribution of terrestrial organic matter (TOM) versus marine organic matter (MOM) into the fjords. The results indicate a sedimentary environment characterized by an overall dominant contribution of MOM compared to the relatively small input of terrestrial derived material. The extremely high supply of MOM is presented by 13 Corg/Norg ratios ranging between 6 and 10, stable carbon isotope values (δ Corg) between -24‰ 15 and -21‰, and stable organic nitrogen (δ Norg) signatures that vary between 4.7‰ and 6.9‰. The terrigenous material content is in general extraordinary low, and TOM increases from the outer part of the Vestfjord towards the innermost fjord parts of the Ofotfjord and Tysfjord. A 13 15 correlation between δ Corg and δ Norg and the Corg/Norg ratios indicates high influences of marine derived OM.

ABSTRACT Standard echo integration methodology has been applied to the stock of Norwegian spring spawning herring (Clupea harengus) wintering in the Ofotfjord-Tysfjord-Vestfjord system during late autumn 1995 and early winter 1996. The primary instruments of acoustic data collection and processing were the SIMRAD EK500/38-kHz echo sounder and the Bergen Echo Integrator. Biological sampling was effected by means of a so-called MultiSampIer pelagic trawl in addition to standard pelagic trawls. Compensation was made during postprocessing for the effect ofacoustic extinction. The major complication ofthe survey and . challenge ofthe analysis has been stratification. This is discussed in the context of(1) mixing cif immature and mature year classes, each with its own behavioural characteristics apropos of diurnal vertical migration and outwards spawning migration, (2) degree of achieved survey coverage, depending on fjord geometry, navigational hazards, available time, and fish distribution, and (3) ongoing spawning migration. Because ofvarious uncertainties, aseries of abundance estimates is presented. The estimated amounts of herring overwintering in the fjords were 6 million tonnes in 2003 and 7 million tonnes in 2004. The stock stays in these fjords from mid-October to January. The herring is every year accompanied by around 1500 killer whales, specialised on the herring as their main prey species. The killer whales have evolved a fascinating feeding technique, called “carousel feeding”. During this procedure they circle around a school of herring to get it tight and bring it to the surface; the surface then acts as a barrier which prevents the herring from escaping. When the school is tight enough the whales slap their tail flukes through it, to stun or kill the fish. After that they eat the motionless fish one by one. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the herring fishery in the fjords has increased a lot, and it is still expanding each year as the herring biomass increases. When a purse-seiner or a pair trawler hauls in its net, or when two pair trawlers pull their nets between them to catch a school of herring, loud sounds are formed which draws killer whales to the place. The whales know that tired and lethargic fish escape in the processes, and these fish are easy to catch for them.

For most of May I‘ve been working morning, noon and night, which has also included a two hundred-mile round trip commute to London on most days. Time, as you will appreciate, has been somewhat scarce! And while I‘m on the subject, this month is going to be hellish busy too, so if July‘s issue is a mite delayed, please bare with me—it‘s on its way! Actually, I‘ll be starting work at the Festival Theatre in Chichester for two-and-a-half months, which, as I‘m sure many of you are aware, is only a stone‘s throw from Portsmouth! If there are any members in that neck of the woods, especially if you‘re actually going to see ‗42nd Street‘ at the theatre, drop me an e-line and perhaps we could share a rum ration or two. While whizzing up and down the M40 can be wearing to both man and motor, it does have the benefit of throwing me in the path of all the delicious bookshops on, and just off, the Charing Cross Road.
