Was first described by Linnaeus in 1758 and was named Silurus callichthys. They generally reach a maximum length of 20 cm and can weigh up to 80g.(Froese and Pauly, 2001) The females are generally larger and more robust as compared to the males. The Callichthys callichthys is an elongated catfish with a straight or flattened belly profile. It also has a broad flattened head and a body which is almost uniform in breath with some posterior tapering which beings after dorsal fin. (Figure 2) Its body consists of 2 rows of overlapping plates or scutes. Approximately 26 – 29 scutes seen on the upper lateral series and 25 – 28 scutes seen on the lower lateral series. The fins are rounded and the fish also has a total of 6-8 soft dorsal rays. It also has 2 pairs of maxillary barbles near its mouth and small eyes. The fish has an inferior type mouth ( Berra, 2007). The Callichthys callichthys is dark olive green in colour to a grey brown as seen in Figure 1, with the males having a blue to violet sheen on its flanks. ECOLOGY. Callichthys callichthys is a freshwater organism which is primarily riverine in habitat (Arratia, 2003). Published online at www.vertebrate-zoology.de on May 12, 2008. > Abstract The syntypes of Silurus callichthys LINNAEUS, 1758 – type species of the genus Callichthys – are lost long time ago. Proper diagnoses of the genus and species within the genus Callichthys are impossible without the correct knowledge of the features of the type species. That’s why the designation of a neotype and the restriction of the locus typicus of Callichthys callichthys (LINNAEUS, 1758) was needed. This species is in South America widely distributed (from Suriname to Buenos Aires). Artifi - cial mixed breeding groups of populations from Suriname, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina were used to test the fertility. All fi shes were fertile up to F2. > Resumen Los sintipos de Silurus callichthys LINNAEUS, 1758 – la especie tipo del género Callichthys – se han perdido hace mucho tiempo. Diagnosis correctas tanto del Género en sí, como de las especies dentro de éste no son posibles sin un conocimiento exacto de las características de la especie tipo de este género. Por esta razón fue necesaria la designación de un neotipo, restringiéndolo a la localidad tipo de Callichthys callichthys (LINNAEUS, 1758). Esta especie tiene una amplia distribución en Sudamérica (Desde Surinam hasta la provincia de Buenos Aires). Grupos mixtos de distintas poblaciones de Surinam, Bolivia, Paraguay y Uruguay fueron hibridizados y criados artifi cialmente, demostrándose su fertilidad en la generación F2. -

This is the first record of CaJlichthys for the we st part of the Eastern Andean Co rdille ra of Colombia. The new species differs from oth ers Callichthys, because its larger number of vertebrae, the inter ception of the first pterigiofore of the analfinthat occurs inth e 19th vertebrae in males and in the 18th verte brae in females. The plates of the poster ior region ofth e supraoccipitalare bare .The centre part ofth e first predor sal plate is not united . The hyomandibular bone is morphologically different from C. Fabriciai. The pa rasphenoid , vomer and mesethmoid are completly different to allthe known species of CalJichthys. The med ially interdigitated suture of the d eithrum withthe caracoid has a different shape of that of C. fabri ciol, The pelvic girdle of Callichthys aibaensis has an ischiatic proce ss, a basiptherygium and an intern al and exte rnal process that differs to allthe known species. -

Litz1 & Stefan Koerber2 1 Friedhofstr. 8, 88448 Attenweiler, Germany, [email protected] 2 Friesenstr. 11, 45476 Muelheim, Germany, [email protected] Introduction The purpose of this paper to present the first complete list of freshwater fishes from Uruguay based on the available literature. It would have been impossible to review al papers from the beginning of ichthyology, starting with authors as far back as Larrañaga or Jenyns, who worked the preserved fishes Darwin brought back home from his famous trip around the world. The publications of Nion et al. (2002) and Teixera de Mello et al. (2011) seemed to be a good basis where to start from. Both are not perfect for this purpose but still valuable sources and we highly recommend both as literature for the interested reader. Nion et al. (2002) published a list of both, the freshwater and marine species of Uruguay, only permitting the already knowledgeable to make the difference and recognize the freshwater fishes. Also, some time has passed since then and the systematic of this paper is outdated in many parts. Teixero de Mello et al. (2011) recently presented an excellent collection of the 100 most abundant species with all relevant information and colour pictures, allowing an easy approximate identification. The names used there are the ones currently considered valid. Uncountable papers have been published on the freshwater fishes of Uruguay, some with regional or local approaches, others treating with certain groups of fishes. -
