This constant interaction is reflected not only in the cultural materials but also in the genetic composition of the inhabitants of this area. Despite constant interaction, cultural restrictions prevented polities from intermixing and coalescent groups under the same polity formed subgroups grounded in their own identity as a result unique histories (Harle 2010; Milner 2006). -

HOUSEHOLDS AND CHANGING USE OF SPACE AT THE TRANSITIONAL EARLY MISSISSIPPIAN AUSTIN SITE A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Mississippi by BENJAMIN GARRETT DAVIS May 2019 ABSTRACT The Austin Site (22TU549) is a village site located in Tunica County, Mississippi dating to approximately A.D. 1150-1350, along the transition from the Terminal Late Woodland to the Mississippian period. While Elizabeth Hunt’s (2017) masters thesis concluded that the ceramics at Austin emphasized a Late Woodland persistence, the architecture and use of space at the site had yet to be analyzed. This study examines this architecture and use of space over time at Austin to determine if they display evidence of increasing institutionalized inequality. This included creating a map of Austin based on John Connaway’s original excavation notes, and then analyzing this map within the temporal context of the upper Yazoo Basin. -

Bradley parker MEMPHIS STORM WATER GREEN CAMP 2018 “Water Quality Affect Upon Wildlife Populations found within Natural and Man-made Wetlands Located in the Memphis and Surrounding Areas” A ct the Wildlife WETLAND Exploration Week of June 11 - 15 SUMMER - 2018 “Does pollution and Water Quality Affect the Wildlife Populations found within both Natural, Man-made, and Channelized Wetlands found within the Memphis and Surrounding Areas?” Types of Wetlands: Natural and Man-made A wetland is one of several types of biomes found in areas having high humidity, may or may not contain large amounts of animal and plant life that is diverse and expresses characteristics adapted to the dryness and wetness of the habitats. Wetlands occur in depressed land areas called basins that are natural a result of land topography or are designed by man, created to house organisms while working as a greenway for improved human health conditions and pollution controls. Trees grow where the ground is wet part of the year and as the ground dries, new life enters and co-exist within a cycle of seasonal rainfall conditions. All wetlands are imperative for the filtration processes working to decrease toxins and chemical pollution found on both land and in water. Wetlands serve as a pollution interception, toxic residue processing and removal of waste. Wetlands are also used for recreational, aesthetics, and educational purposes and provide homes called habitats for many diverse species of organisms. The flora and fauna thrive and adapt within a wetland environment that consist by seasonal conditions produced by weather conditions of dryness and wetness and are associated with storm and rainwater runoff, drainage, pond, river, and pool overflows, man- induced water channeling, flooding and some processes associated with drainage waste collection and disposal. -

2018 Stormwater Monitoring Plan Unincorporated Shelby County, Tennessee May 1, 2018 The Small Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) encompassed by unincorporated Shelby County, Tennessee (Tracking No. TNS075663) includes portions of four (4) distinct HUC_8 Watersheds, as shown on Figure 1. These watersheds include the following: 1. The Loosahatchie River Watershed (HUC_8 08010209) 2. the Wolf River Watershed (HUC_8 08010210) 3. the Nonconnah Creek Watershed (HUC_8 08010211), and 4. the Mississippi River Watershed (HUC_8 08010100) Figure 1 HUC_8 Watersheds Shelby County, Tennessee The land uses present in each of these watersheds are extremely diverse, including agricultural/pastures, woodlands, both low and high density residential, and commercial/industrial. In addition to the various land uses encountered within the Shelby County MS4, a large percentage of the runoff in the watersheds can be attributed to MS4’s belonging to other government entities. The Loosahatchie River Watershed receives runoff from Fayette County and Tipton County in Tennessee, Naval Support Activities Mid South, and from the municipalities of Memphis, Arlington, Lakeland, Bartlett and Millington, TN. The Wolf River Watershed receives runoff from Fayette County, TN, northern Mississippi, and from the municipalities of Memphis, Bartlett, Lakeland, Germantown, and Collierville, TN. The Nonconnah Creek Watershed receives runoff from Fayette County, TN, from Marshall and Desoto 2018 Stormwater Monitoring Plan Unincorporated Shelby County, Tennessee Counties in Mississippi, from the municipalities of Germantown, and Collierville, TN. The Mississippi River Watershed receives runoff from the eastern floodplain of the Mississippi River from the southwest corner of Shelby County, TN to the confluence of the Ohio River at Cairo, IL. -

SECTION IV: The Mississippian Period in Tennessee Chapter 12: The Late Mississippian Period (AD 1350-1500) - Draft By Michaelyn Harle, Shannon D. Koerner, and Bobby R. Braly 1 Introduction Throughout the Mississippian world this time period appears to be a time of great social change. In eastern Tennessee, Dallas Phase sites further elaborated on the Mississippian lifeway, becoming highly organized and home to political leaders. Settlements were sometimes quite extensive (i.e., the Dallas, Toqua, and Ledford Island sites with deep middens, often a palisade wall, sometimes with bastions, densely packed domestic structures, and human interments throughout the village area and also in mounds. Elsewhere in the region, there is evidence that much of West Tennessee and parts of the Cumberland-Tennessee valley were either abandoned by Mississippian societies or so fundamentally reorganized that they were rendered archaeologically invisible. This abandonment appears to be part of a larger regional trend of large portions of the Central Mississippi Valley, often referred to as the vacant quarter. A number of motives for this abandonment have been provided including the dissolution of Cahokia, increased intra- regional warfare, and environmental shifts associated with the onslaught of the Little Ice Age (Meeks 2006; Cobb and Butler 2002; Williams 1983, 1990). This two sides of the continium is important since it gives us a more microscopic glimpse of what was being played out in the larger pan-Mississippian stage. Regional and temporal refinements that are currently in progress gives us a unique perspective into the similarities and differences in which Tennessee Mississippian societies reacted to this unstable period. -

It is a two-dimensional style of representational art that appears solely on containers: Accepted 22 January 2017 marine shell cups and ceramic vessels. Iconographically, the style focuses on the depiction of KEYWORDS zoomorphic supernatural powers of the Beneath World. Seriating the known corpus of images Style; iconography; allows us to characterize three successive style phases, Holly Bluff I, II, and III. Using limited data, Mississippian; shell cups; we source the style to the northern portion of the lower Mississippi Valley. multidimensional scaling The well-known representational art of the Mississippian area in which Spiro is found. Using stylistic homologues period (A.D. 1100–1600) in the American South and in pottery and copper, Brown sourced the Braden A Midwest exhibits strong regional distinctions in styles, style, which he renamed Classic Braden, to Moorehead genres, and iconography. Recognizing this artistic phase Cahokia at ca. A.D. 1200–1275 (Brown 2007; regionalism in the past few decades has led to a new Brown and Kelly 2000). -
