Samuel Schwarzkopf University College London, UK Abstract We report a confusing stimulus which demonstrates the power of local interpretation of three- dimensional structure to disrupt a coherent global perception. Keywords 3D perception, depth, perception, illusion Figure 1 shows a photograph of nine stackable chairs, leaning back at an angle against a wall. For all observers (n ¼ 40þ, recruited ad hoc via Facebook, where the stimulus was displayed), this image elicits confusion. If the number of chairs is reduced below four, the effect disappears. Figure 2(a) is an annotated version of Figure 1. The local interpretation of three-dimensional structure – at each ‘corner’, i.e. AD, BC and EF – is generally unambiguous (apart from AD, which flips in depth in a Necker-cube-like manner for some observers). But the repetition of the stacked elements along the virtual contours AD, BC and, to a lesser extent, EF suggests a change in depth along those lines which does not actually exist. Figure 2(b) makes this explicit: an abstracted version of the image reveals an alternative interpretation, which fails to correspond to reality – the repetitive structure now looks more like a stack of quadrilaterals rising from the ground plane.

Several - the Gildas Quartet, Michael Foyle, and Giacomo Smith with the Kansas Smitty’s, are playing for us this evening. This year CMF hopes to move into a more permanent home in the City at St Bartholomew the Less, within the boundaries of St Bartholomew’s Hospital – and within the City of London’s ‘Culture Mile’. This anticipates the relocation of the Museum of London to its new site in Smithfield and the creation of a new Centre for Music on the south side of the Barbican – all exciting developments in the heart of the Capital.

The research combines book-based strategies and performative encounters with people and places, to build a rich, chorographic survey described in images, sound files, objects and texts. A key research problem – how to express the forensic fingerprint of that which is invisible in the historic record – is described as a poetics of uncertainty, a speculative response to information that teeters on the brink of what can be reliably known. This poetics combines multi-modal writing to communicate events in the life of the research, auto-ethnographically, from the point of view of an artist working in the academy.

Overview This has been another excellent year for the Heilbronn Institute, which is now firmly established as a major national mathematical research centre. HIMR has developed a strong brand and is increasingly influential in the UK mathematics community. There is currently an outstanding cohort of Heilbronn Research Fellows doing first-rate research. Recruitment of new Fellows has been most encouraging, as is the fact that many distinguished academic mathematicians continue to work with the Institute. The research culture at HIMR is excellent. Members have expressed a high level of satisfaction. This is especially the case with the Fellows, many of whom have chosen to continue their relationships with the Institute. Our new Fellows come from leading mathematics departments and have excellent academic credentials. Those who left have moved to high-profile groups, including several to permanent academic positions. We currently have 29 Fellows, hosted by 6 universities. We are encouraged by the fact that of the 9 Fellows joining us this year, 5 are women. The achievements of our Fellows this year again range from winning prestigious prizes to publishing in the elite mathematical journals and organising major mathematical meetings.

    This letter appeared in the Guardian on 4 June from all Heads of Colleges Dear Sir, The events in the US dramatise the consequences of allowing deeply embedded racist attitudes to be subject to too little challenge. Conscious and unconscious racial bias, and inaction in addressing them, remain prevalent across many institutions. We write in a personal capacity as heads of Oxford Colleges to reassert our belief in the need to promote, protect and advance equal dignity and respect, diversity of thought, good race relations, tolerance and multi culturalism in our institutions and the world. We acknowledge the role that education can play in building racial equality and fair inclusion of black voices and perspectives in society. We recognise and regret that, for black members of our community, the unfolding crisis together with the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on their communities has caused them particular anxiety, anger and pain. We stand with them during these difficult moments with hope that, through the global mobilisation of many against these injustices, through education, discussion, and peaceful protest, we may work together towards a world free of systemic racism and discrimination.
