"-Burke. ~"'rom early e!iiidhood I have been interested in learning more 1bout my remote ancestors. This thirsting for knowledge of my dnfolk was due partly to the fact that my grandparents were J~oneers to Iowa and had left most of their ''folks'' hack in V'irginia. They talked often of their near and dear relatives wl1" ived in the Blue l{idge couutry aurl to my young inind this iPemed sad anrl unfair that families shnnld be separated in this , ,=nmer. I would question them at length about their 1uolie c,f living. customs. ett:.. haek there. until I came to know m:r grandfather, Billy Giles, T:1wle Dabn.-y }lays, Annt Oinney, \u11t :'llissot;ri. ,rnd a l,n>'t 01 1,t1wts intimately, nt· so I thought. 1'he ,var B1>twE>1>n ThP States was still fresh in their minch; when my Hamlett grandparents left Virginia a11d they never ~eemed to forget the grie:f and hardship~ sufft>red at that time and the subsequent decision to moYe to a new country. L'twle,-,, a1mts an,1 :-om,~n~ -pleal',eJ w;th the idea or a permanent family reeord, have gladly searched their Bibles, old records. old letters and their dictations have been recorded. :Many thauks are due tho"4e who gave me aid in making these re-cords avai1able to succ~ding generations. Other data r.ontained in this work was gained through the various county court reco~i!;;, ei.;peeially those of Amherst and ~el-,on Counties. Virgiuia. The ancient .findings were obtained from the State Archives and Libraries through the assistance of archivists ant! ~enealogists. The records have been arranged and compiled f:rnm iraterial sent me through corre11pondence, and due to the faet that a few failed to acknowledge inquiries relatiYe to thi.;; work. some of the families are not as well represented as 1 sl1ould like to have them. My major handicap wa,s, 1mforunately, the fact that I was so far from the :-cene of aetion. It is interesting to note tbf' many family connt><:tions through out this genealogy, and there are numerons other~ where the -relationship has not hf'en nwntioned dne to in:-nfficient proof at hand. This is readily understood when the many yearn of residence in the same locality are realized. My first efforts in the gent>alo;!icuf field were family :r:eeords made up in mimeographed · mann--••ript foru1. which were submitted to the members of tlw farnilr who hau previously St'nt the records to me. The principal pnrpose of this procedure was to have e1Ton corrected and additions made, preparatory to a permanent family record. It is finished. Thank you for your loyal and generous help. Unto your judgment I commit this work asking your kind consideration, for omissions are many and errors will be found. ("Whoever thinks a faultless piece to see, thinks what ne'er was, nor is, no:, e'er shall be." .Alexander Pope). This is a labor of love, cherish it for yourself aud for your descendants, and may you be inspired to seek further family history.
