    Strengthening Urban Engagement in Universities in Africa and Asia: International Forum hosted by the Philippines Normal University in Manila Tuesday 28 August 2018, Public and Alumni Affairs Hall, Philippine Normal University, Taft Avenue, Manila The Strengthening Urban Engagement of Universities in Asia and Africa (SUEUAA) project is funded by the British Academy under the Cities and Infrastructure programme of its Global Challenges Research Fund. The project, led by the University of Glasgow, includes six international partners from Iran, Iraq, the Philippines, South Africa and is a collaborative study between University of Glasgow (Scotland), and Universities in Iran (University of Kurdistan), Iraq (University of DuhoK), the Philippines (Philippine Normal University), Zimbabwe (University of Harare), Tanzania (University of Dar-es-Salaam), and South Africa (University of Johannesburg). The project addresses a core problem in emerging economies of strengthening the urban engagement role of universities, and ways they contribute to developing sustainable cities in the context of the major social, cultural, environmental and economic challenges facing the global south. It uses a set of well-proven benchmarKing tools as its principal method, and seeKs to strengthen the capacity of universities to contribute to city resilience towards natural and human-made disasters. Examples of urban engagement include supporting the development of physical infrastructure, ecological sustainability, and social inclusion (including of migrants). It calls upon contributions from science and engineering, the arts, environmental sciences, social sciences and business studies. It assesses the extent to which universities in 6 countries under study can respond to demands of society, and how through dialogue with city staKeholders this can be enhanced and impact on policy; it uses a collaborative team from the UK and emerging economies.

    THE AMERICAN COLONIAL AND CONTEMPORARY TRADITIONS The American tradition in Philippine architecture covers the period from 1898 to the present, and encompasses all architectural styles, such as the European styles, which came into the Philippines during the American colonial period. This tradition is represented by churches, schoolhouses, hospitals, government office buildings, commercial office buildings, department stores, hotels, movie houses, theaters, clubhouses, supermarkets, sports facilities, bridges, malls, and high-rise buildings. New forms of residential architecture emerged in the tsalet, the two-story house, and the Spanish-style house. The contemporary tradition refers to the architecture created by Filipinos from 1946 to the present, which covers public buildings and private commercial buildings, religious structures, and domestic architecture like the bungalow, the one-and-a-half story house, the split-level house, the middle-class housing and the low-cost housing project units, the townhouse and condominium, and least in size but largest in number, the shanty. History The turn of the century brought, in the Philippines, a turn in history. Over three centuries of Spanish rule came to an end, and five decades of American rule began. The independence won by the Philippine Revolution of 1896 was not recognized by Spain, nor by the United States, whose naval and military forces had taken Manila on the pretext of aiding the revolution. In 1898 Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, and after three years of military rule the Americans established a civil government. With a new regime came a new culture. The English language was introduced and propagated through the newly established public school system.

Architect / Professor College of Architecture, University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines Abstract What is Philippine Architecture? It has been said that unlike our other Asian neighbors, the Philippines has no architecture of its own that it could boast of. Even the bahay na bato is not really Filipino but Mexican in nature. Philippine Architecture has been a mixture of eastern and western culture. Although the question lingers in the air, still the Philippine can be proud of its buildings, specially those built at the turn of the century. One such structure is the Luneta Hotel. A Spanish architect Salvador Farre built it in 1918. Built in the French renaissance architecture, it is considered as the only building in the Philippines with such an architectural type. The building has operated as a hotel since its opening and continued to do so until the late 70‟s. Unfortunately, due to some financial constraint the hotel has closed and was left to decay. Identified by the National Historical Institute as a heritage building, the owners of the Luneta Hotel‟s intentions to demolish the building was prevented. Presently, the building is slowing deteriorating due to neglect of the owner, probably due to its lack of economical viability. Through this research it is aim that a conservation plan could be formulated for the Luneta Hotel, identifying the procedures to be used to restore the building, identifying significant, less significant and obtrusive additions to the building, which could be retained or removed.
