Dear Descendants, As spring comes to the Carolina Lowcountry, and how glorious it is as I watch my garden begin to send up tender green shoots and the flowery plants begin to bloom, I must report on the Society’s interesting spring trip to Charlottesville, Va. Thank you to our host, Laurie Croft, who planned a lovely sunny day to tour Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. In wandering through his house and gardens, you certainly began to gain a sense of the man and his strong personality. After a delicious lunch at historic Michie Tavern we then traveled to Laurie’s alma mater, the University of Virginia, for our regular meeting and a tour of the grounds. The University very kindly opened its special collection of Signers memorabilia to the Society, a rare treat for all. We were also shown a replica of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration plaque that is to be installed in the room due to Laurie’s diligence. Those who stayed over on Sunday were treated to a tour of the King Family Vineyards, which I am sure Mr. Jefferson himself would have quite enjoyed along with a sip or two of their fine wine. Next spring, Lucy Tonacci will be hosting a very different meeting weekend at Stratford Hall, the home of her ancestor, Signer . A little teaser: You might even meet Mr. Lee himself. It will be a weekend filled with events for children as well as adults. So watch for the notice of this fun-filled weekend of history. It is with great sadness that I must report on the death of Page Laubach Warden, a descendant of Thomas Nelson, Jr. Until the time of her death she was a most interested and ardent supporter of this Society. I would like to offer my heartfelt sympathy as well as the Society’s to her family. She will certainly be missed. I shall look forward to welcoming all to Philadelphia on the 4th of July and watching the young bell tappers as they solemnly perform the ritual ringing of the Liberty Bell at 2 p.m. A very special honor indeed for those young people. This year Independence Hall will be carrying the ceremony on the internet via YouTube as well as the local TV stations and print media. As usual, we will be continuing the tradition of having our Annual Congress in the historic Long Room at Independence Hall and listening to the reading of the Declaration of Independence as writ- ten by our noble ancestors, who did truly not only pledge but give their lives, their fortunes and sacred honor to the great cause of Liberty and Justice for all. What a grand legacy that we have been left with as the Society continues its commitment to keeping alive the memory and values of our ancestors.

Sincerely,

Hope Middleton Wood, President-General

Spring 2018 meeting will be at the home of two Signers

Nature and history will draw you and your family to the Virginia plantation Stratford Hall April 20-22, 2018.

Explore the Great House and stables, kayak on the Potomac, search fossil sharks’ teeth on the beach, grind the gristmill, toast marshmallows at a bonfire, hike the 1,900-acre property and much more.

DSDI member Lucy Duke Tonacci invites all DSDI members and their families to this home of her fifth great-grandparents, Thomas and Hannah Lee. Their sons, Richard Henry Lee and , were the only brothers who signed the Declaration of Independence. They both grew up at Stratford Hall in the 1730s and 1740s. On Saturday evening, we will be entertained by an actor and historian playing Richard Henry Lee.

All meals, classes, meetings and a mini-camp are planned at Stratford Hall for you and your family. You may stay at the lux- urious Inn at Stratford Hall or book a cabin for your family. DSDI is holding all of the plantation’s lodging to create a mem- orable weekend. To make a reservation, call Stratford Hall at 804-493-1966.

Scholarship applications closed

The scholarship application process for the 2017-2018 academic year was closed March 17th after a two- week flurry of activity. Applications will be reviewed during the months of April and May with final awards announced at the July 4th meeting in Philadelphia. The list of scholarship winners will be posted on the website. This year’s essay question was as follows:

Our ancestors who signed the Declaration of Independence included lawyers, merchants, land owners, physicians, and scientists. They were all selected as state delegates to the Second meeting in Philadelphia, PA. How do you feel your ancestor would relate to your own career ambitions? How has education impacted your choice, versus the choices your ancestors had when they were your age? Do you think your ancestor would have chosen a different career if he could have availed himself of the educational opportunities that are available to you?

Applications for scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year will be accepted starting in December 2017. Applicants must be a member of the DSDI as of October 2017 in order to apply for the next aca- demic year. Scholarship guidelines as well as important dates can be found at our website www.dsdi1776.com, under The Group. If you have specific questions, you are welcome to email the Scholarship Chairman.

Respectfully, D Jill Haimes DSDI Scholarship Chairman [email protected]

Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence A Resolution of Appreciation Grace Keiper Staller

Whereas, Grace Staller is a descendant of Signer John Hart of New Jersey;

Whereas, Grace Staller became a member (#1465LM) of this Society on April 17, 1970, and soon became an interested and capable volunteer in the many arrangements necessary to make the Annual Congress of our Society in Philadelphia the compelling event it has become for so many years;

Whereas, Grace Staller has been a key player in making the annual Bell Ringing Ceremony at Independence Hall on July 4th a highlight through participation by our Junior Members, and thus added much to this commemoration;

Whereas, Grace Staller has been Chair of our Projects Committee for many years, where she created and accomplished the task of marking the graves of all 56 Signers with a Society Plaque; and where it was not possible to mark the grave of some, she found a way to memorialize those alternatively;

Whereas, Grace Staller has now given up these duties so well done, and over so many years;

Now therefore, be it:

RESOLVED, that the Board of Governors of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, assembled at its meeting at the Boar’s Head Inn near Charlottesville, Virginia, on this 31st day of March, 2017, does thank and recognize our friend and fellow Governor, Grace Keiper Staller, for these extraordinary contributions to our Society, and present her a copy of this resolution with our warm affection and every best wish.
