Thank you to our host, Laurie Croft, who planned a lovely sunny day to tour Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. In wandering through his house and gardens, you certainly began to gain a sense of the man and his strong personality. After a delicious lunch at historic Michie Tavern we then traveled to Laurie’s alma mater, the University of Virginia, for our regular meeting and a tour of the grounds. The University very kindly opened its special collection of Signers memorabilia to the Society, a rare treat for all. We were also shown a replica of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration plaque that is to be installed in the room due to Laurie’s diligence. Those who stayed over on Sunday were treated to a tour of the King Family Vineyards, which I am sure Mr. Jefferson himself would have quite enjoyed along with a sip or two of their fine wine. Next spring, Lucy Tonacci will be hosting a very different meeting weekend at Stratford Hall, the home of her ancestor, Signer Richard Henry Lee. A little teaser: You might even meet Mr. Lee himself. It will be a weekend filled with events for children as well as adults. So watch for the notice of this fun-filled weekend of history. It is with great sadness that I must report on the death of Page Laubach Warden, a descendant of Thomas Nelson, Jr. Until the time of her death she was a most interested and ardent supporter of this Society. I would like to offer my heartfelt sympathy as well as the Society’s to her family. She will certainly be missed. I shall look forward to welcoming all to Philadelphia on the 4th of July and watching the young bell tappers as they solemnly perform the ritual ringing of the Liberty Bell at 2 p.m. A very special honor indeed for those young people. This year Independence Hall will be carrying the ceremony on the internet via YouTube as well as the local TV stations and print media. As usual, we will be continuing the tradition of having our Annual Congress in the historic Long Room at Independence Hall and listening to the reading of the Declaration of Independence as writ- ten by our noble ancestors, who did truly not only pledge but give their lives, their fortunes and sacred honor to the great cause of Liberty and Justice for all. What a grand legacy that we have been left with as the Society continues its commitment to keeping alive the memory and values of our ancestors. Sincerely, Hope Middleton Wood, President-General 2 Spirit of ’76 Spirit Spring 5-17.qxp_Newsletter 5/3/17 1:08 PM Page 3 Spring 2018 meeting will be at the home of two Signers Nature and history will draw you and your family to the Virginia plantation Stratford Hall April 20-22, 2018. Explore the Great House and stables, kayak on the Potomac, search fossil sharks’ teeth on the beach, grind the gristmill, toast marshmallows at a bonfire, hike the 1,900-acre property and much more. DSDI member Lucy Duke Tonacci invites all DSDI members and their families to this home of her fifth great-grandparents, Thomas and Hannah Lee. Their sons, Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, were the only brothers who signed the Declaration of Independence. They both grew up at Stratford Hall in the 1730s and 1740s. On Saturday evening, we will be entertained by an actor and historian playing Richard Henry Lee. All meals, classes, meetings and a mini-camp are planned at Stratford Hall for you and your family. You may stay at the lux- urious Inn at Stratford Hall or book a cabin for your family. DSDI is holding all of the plantation’s lodging to create a mem- orable weekend. To make a reservation, call Stratford Hall at 804-493-1966.
