Pilgrimage to Drakar Dreldzong The Written Tradition and Contemporary Practices among Amdo Tibetans ,#-7--a};-1 Zhuoma ( |) Thesis Submitted for the Degree of M. Phil in Tibetan Studies Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages University of Oslo Spring 2008 1 Summary This thesis focuses on pilgrimage (gnas skor) to Drakar Dreldzong, a Buddhist holy mountain (gnas ri) in a remote area of Amdo, Tibet, in the present day Qinghai Province in the western part of China. The mountain had long been a solitude hermitage and still is a popular pilgrimage site for Tibetan lamas and nearby laymen. Pilgrimage to holy mountains was, and still is, significant for the religious, cultural and literary life of Tibet, and even for today’s economic climate in Tibet. This thesis presents the traditional perceptions of the site reflected both in written texts, namely pilgrimage guides (gnas bshad), and in the contemporary practices of pilgrimage to Drakar Dreldzong. It specifically talks about an early pilgrimage guide (Guide A) written by a tantric practitioner in the early 17th century, and newly developed guides (Guides B, C and D), based on the 17th century one, edited and composed by contemporary Tibetan lay intellectuals and monks from Dreldzong Monastery. This monastery, which follows the Gelukba tradition, was established in 1923 at the foot of the mountain. The section about the early guide mainly introduces the historical framework of pilgrimage guides and provides an impression of the situation of the mountain in from the 17th to the 21st century. In particular, it translates the text and gives comments and analysis on the content. -

By its very nature the short story affords the writer the opportunity to introduce swiftly any developments in ideology, theme or style. Scholars have interpreted Chinese fiction published during 1979 as indicative of a "change" in the development of 20th century Chinese literature. This study examines a number of short stories from 1979 in order to determine the extent of that "change". The first two chapters concern the establishment of a representative database and the adoption of viable methods of interpretation. An important, although much neglected, phenomenon in the make-up of 1979 literature are the works which appeared in so-called "nonofficial" journals. -

Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Denton, Advisor Heather Inwood Copyright by Hao Zhou 2010 Abstract The present study serves to explore the relationships between cities and literature by addressing the issues of space, time, and modernity in four works of fiction, Lao She’s Luotuo xiangzi (Camel Xiangzi, aka Rickshaw Boy), Mao Dun’s Ziye (Midnight), Ba Jin’s Han ye (Cold nights), and Zhang Ailing’s Qingcheng zhi lian (Love in a fallen city), and the four cities they depict, namely Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Hong Kong, respectively. In this thesis I analyze the depictions of the cities in the four works, and situate them in their historical and geographical contexts to examine the characteristics of each city as represented in the novels. In studying urban space in the literary texts, I try to address issues of the “imaginablity” of cities to question how physical urban space intertwines with the characters’ perception and imagination about the cities and their own psychological activities. These works are about the characters, the plots, or war in the first half of the twentieth century; they are also about cities, the human experience in urban space, and their understanding or reaction about the urban space. The experience of cities in Republican era fiction is a novel one, one associated with a new modern historical consciousness. -

Alai and I: A Belated Encounter Patrizia Liberati (Italian Institute of Culture) Abstract: This paper attempts to analyze the reasons for the scanty presence in translation of Alai’s literary production. Probably the most important motive is that this author’s narrative does not correspond to the idealized Western idea of Tibet as Shangri-la, and of its people as noble savages. It will then make some observation on Alai’s pictorial “thangka style” of narration, his unique use of language and his poetic realism. Finally, it will identify cinematic productions as a successful medium to spread knowledge and deepen the understanding of contemporary Tibetan literature. A Western Collective Delusion: Alai’s Tibet is Not Shangri-la In November 2018, the Sichuan Writers Association invited me to the symposium “Borderline Books, Naturalis Historia and Epics”, an international occasion to study Alai’s works. This presented me with the long overdue occasion to reflect on the writer’s literary creation. I soon realized that the number of Alai’s works in translation—at least in the Western languages I am able to understand—compares very badly with the abundancy and richness of his creation. I found English, French and Italian translations of Cheng’ai luoding and English translations of Gesair Wang and Kong Shan. There are some short stories like Wind over the Grasslands; Three Grassworms; Aku Tonpa; The Hydroelectric Station and The Threshing Machine in English. I argue that the fluidity of satiric writing in the 1930s and 1940s undermines the certainties of the “satiric triangle” and gives rise to what I call, variously, self-satire, self-counteractive satire, empathetic satire and ambiguous satire. It has been standard in the study of satire to assume fixed and fairly stable relations among satirist, reader, and satirized object. This “satiric triangle” highlights the opposition of satirist and satirized object and has generally assumed an alignment by the reader with the satirist and the satirist’s judgments of the satirized object. Literary critics and theorists have usually shared these assumptions about the basis of satire. I argue, however, that beginning with late-Qing exposé fiction, satire in modern Chinese literature has shown an unprecedented uncertainty and fluidity in the relations among satirist, reader and satirized object. -

The Spiti Valley Recovering the Past & Exploring the Present Wolfson College 6 t h -7 t h May, 2016 OXFORD Welcome I am pleased to welcome you to the first International Conference on Spiti, which is being held at the Leonard Wolfson Auditorium on May 6 th and 7 th , 2016. The Spiti Valley is a remote Buddhist enclave in the Indian Himalayas. It is situated on the borders of the Tibetan world with which it shares strong cultural and historical ties. Often under-represented on both domestic and international levels, scholarly research on this subject – all disciplines taken together – has significantly increased over the past decade. The conference aims at bringing together researchers currently engaged in a dialogue with past and present issues pertaining to Spitian culture and society in all its aspects. It is designed to encourage interdisciplinary exchanges in order to explore new avenues and pave the way for future research. There are seven different panels that address the theme of this year’s conference, The Spiti Valley : Recovering the Past and Exploring the Present , from a variety of different disciplinary perspectives including, archaeology, history, linguistics, anthropology, architecture, and art conservation. I look forward to the exchange of ideas and intellectual debates that will develop over these two days. On this year’s edition, we are very pleased to have Professor Deborah Klimburg-Salter from the universities of Vienna and Harvard as our keynote speaker. Professor Klimburg-Salter will give us a keynote lecture entitled Through the black light - new technology opens a window on the 10th century . -

THE THREE-SISTERS IN THE GE-SAR EPIC -Siegbert Hummel In its Mongolian version, as published by I. J. Schmidt in German translation 1, . as well as in the Kalmuk fragments which were made known as early as 1804/0 S by Benjamin Bergmann2 the Ge-sar saga repeatedly mentions three sisters who prompt his actions during his life on earth, who urge him on or rebuke him 3 Not only Ge-sar, but also the giant with whom he enters into combat and finally kills, has three maidens as sisters, and, as can be understood from the action, they are a kind of goddesses of fate who dwell in trees which are to be regarded as the seat ofthe vital-pow~r (Tib.: bla) of the monster, i.e. as socalled bla-gnas or bla-shing. Consequently the giant is brought to the point of ruin by the killing of the maidens and the destruction ot the trees4. \ The three sisters are in all respects to be distinguished from the well-known genii of man who are born together with him and who appear in' the Tibetan judgment of the dead where the good genius, a lha (Skt.: deva), enumerates the good deeds of the deceased by means of white pebbles, while the evil one, a demon (Tib.:' dre), counts the evil actions with black pebb1es S. Nor are the three sisters to be identified wilhthe personal guardian deities of the Tibetans, the 'go-ba'i-1ha, with whom they have certain traiits in common. The group of 'go ha'i -lha normally has five members. -
Alai's Red Poppies As Historiographic Metafiction
Studies on Asia A localist counter-narrative to nationalist histories: Alai’s Red Poppies as historiographic metafiction Wokar T. Rigumi RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia Popular understandings of the Chinese occupation of Tibet are rigidly lodged between the interpretations propagated by nationalist histories on either side – the Tibetan [in-exile] version of Chinese invasion of a sovereign nation or the CCP‟s version of re-unification of the Chinese motherland. In this paper, I will examine how the Tibeto-Chinese writer Alai‟s novel Red Poppies creates a fictional account of the historical conflict from the perspective of the chieftains of the eastern Tibetan borderlands as a counter-narrative to these linear, ideological narratives of nationalist histories. Presenting an alternative view of the historical event through the fictional testimony of the eastern Tibetan border people, the novel is aligned with the literary genre called historiographic metafiction. Linda Hutcheon has defined historiographic metafiction as a fictional account of an historical event that subverts dominant understandings of the event and also unsettles historiography‟s claim to objective knowledge of the past. While concluding that the novel presents an effective counter-narrative to the nationalist histories, Alai, however, falls a little short of tapping the full potency of the subversive quality of historiographic metafiction achieved by a writer like the Japanese- Canadian novelist Joy Kogawa who grapples with the impossibility of accommodating the past through the act of historiography. The only writer of Tibetan ancestry to win the Mao Dun prize, the highest award for literary excellence in China, Alai‟s novel Red Poppies has been hailed as the most important literary work to have emerged from contemporary Tibet. -

Abstract It has often been claimed that writing systems have formal grammars structurally analogous to those of spoken and signed phonology. This paper demonstrates one consequence of this analogy for Chinese script and the writing systems that it has influenced: as with phonology, areal script patterns include the borrowing of formal regularities, not just of formal elements or interpretive functions. Whether particular formal Chinese script regularities were borrowed, modified, or ignored also turns out not to depend on functional typology (in morphemic/syllabic Tangut script, moraic Japanese katakana, and featural/phonemic/syllabic Korean hangul) but on the benefits of making the borrowing system visually distinct from Chinese, the relative productivity of the regularities within Chinese character grammar, and the level at which the borrowing takes place. Areal phonological patterns and areal script patterns Sinoform writing systems look Chinese, even when they are functionally quite different. The visual traits of non-logographic Japanese katakana and Korean hangul are nontrivially like those of logographic Chinese script, as are those of the logographic but structurally unique script of Tangut, an extinct Tibeto-Burman language of what is now north-central China.
